I rarely play SMB2, I don't even remember me clearing the original game to be honest, but this hack is pretty much close to it I must say.
I'm mainly impressed by the graphics, which have been inserted and assembled (almost) flawlessly. Too bad I can't say the same for the gameplay: yes, the author litterally said that this "remake" is based on SMW mechanics, but it's kind of sad that many things got screwed just because of this. I'm talking about the boss battles; the sand gimmick (hell I hated it); the "potion doors"; some enemies acting weird, like the plants, which are slightly edited hammer bros.; and much much more. While the aesthetics aims for accuracy all the way, I feel like SMW's mechanics ruined what can be defined a masterpiece. As overall, no, this hack isn't butt, but if you want to play SMB2, I'd suggest you play the original rather than this. If you're curious to see how it would look like using SMW's engine, then have fun! You sure won't forget it.
Misc issues:
-Some jumps are impossible to make (like 5-3's secret exit or one in 7-2); of course, if you luckily have a leaf, it will be easy enough to proceed;
-Most of the levels have a few scalines of the upper part of the screen flicker black on accurate emulators.
