Level design is consistently simple and traditional. There are no gimmicky designs or item searches, which is great if you just want an action hack to play. Some of the levels are underwhelming since they're too short to deliver much enjoyment, and two levels have some pretty unfair traps like shell-kicking Koopas in spots that are hard to avoid or moving floor holes right next to where you spawn. I was let down by the final boss being lame compared to the much harder boss in the level before.
The unique part about this hack is there are three directions you can go from the beginning, and only one level on one of these paths has the route to the final level. You can get a hint going one way, and the green switch going the other. If you've played it before, you'll know exactly where to go and can skip most of the game.
Not a lot of thought was put into making it look good, as some levels have large areas structured out of blocks rather than ground and there's little in the way of decoration. Some levels have ugly palettes, such as Phobia Fortress, and Chaotic Mansion's ? blocks are kind of gross.
There's a bit of background garbage in Chaotic Mansion. Music craps out in some levels due to Clappin' Chucks, and blowing fireballs with Yoshi in such levels will cause a game crash when you die or beat the level. Yoshi's tongue gets glitched in Express Tunnel and he should not be allowed in any level with the ghost or castle sprite sets without remapping and ExGFX involved, and baby Yoshies should never be placed outside of eggs in levels that adult Yoshies can exist in. There's also a sprite tile memory problem in Phobia Fortress because an invisible sprite killed me in one area. Spike Top should also not be used on slopes. Finally, there's an unavoidable game crash in the final level because the Podoboo kills the sound and the game will go black upon exiting the room.
This is a hack that had an awful lot of problems and should not have been accepted even back in 2008 - a fixme badge will be awarded for the music fix, sprite tile memory fix, and blockage of Yoshi from entering levels with incompatible tilesets and the level with the green Yoshi in it.
