Super Mario World Hacks → Ball of Revenge

Submission Details

Name: Ball of Revenge
Author: Darky
Added:
Demo: Yes
Hall of Fame: No
Length: 10 exit(s)
Type: Standard: Easy
Description: The first world is mostly vanilla (except the music and boss)
First hack I submit and second hack that I made.
fixme:
- Music breaks on accurate emulators.
- Many levels have garbled graphics; while this hack has been addressed with a music fixme, it would be nice if the fixer could fix the messed up graphics too.

Design-wise, this hack isn't bad. The design style is linear, but in most of the levels you can choose many different paths. This makes it fun to play if you like exploration. Gimmick-wise, it's not fancy, it kinda keeps in the traditional way of designing, yet manages to be fun enough. The sprite placement is a bit poor maybe, it would've been better if it was more studied. Overall though, it's okay.

Aesthetics here divide in two parts: the correct assembed one and the garbled one. The former is okay, the SMW elements are pretty much the only tiles which didn't mess up, not much to say. The latter... awful. I think that something went wrong when the author created the .ips patch, since everytime a gfx slot is used by i.e. a custom foreground, custom sprites, etc. is messed up. This brings the hack down badly: while there are nice elements in it, some of the garbled graphics make some levels really hard to play through (pretty much the last level of the demo).

Some other issues:
- Music breaks on accurate emulators.
- Garbled graphics in the following levels: Green Switch Palace, Bonus no.1, Rocky Mountains 1 (probably I skipped a level or two).
- Chaotic Isle 3 can potentially make you stuck if you don't collect all the Yoshi Coins: infact, if you take the midway point and die, you're unable to collect some of the Yoshi Coins in the first half of the level, since the path is blocked with brown blocks.

Overall, a potentially good hack, but the glitches make it awfully bad. It really needs a fix.
