Great hack, but has some flaws.
First of all the music crash on newer emulators, but we can forgive it
Second, No midway, this stage is like 20 minutes long
Third, I fell the key was a bit to hidden in retro land
Other than that it's a well designed hack and I loved how each section was different!
This is a hack I'm not sure how to feel about. The level design is pretty kickass, but the execution around it has a few major flaws.
The level preceding Demonsul's Fortress has no reason to exist, as it feels more like an intro. The meat of the hack is the castle, and the entire universe within.
Inside this level, you'll find raw action that tests your reflexes, classic Mouser and a hammer-throwing Shy Guy ready to kick your butt, a capture the flag minigame, doors you need to unlock, a trip into retro world, and a town you can shop in, all with no way back. If you die once, you must start the entire level over. The strange progression in a seemingly neverending level and the idea you lose all your progress when you die feels like a roguelike, only nothing is randomized, and a reaper won't be out to get you for taking too long (except you're timed in a certain forest area.) This mystique makes this hack different from many others.
All was going well until something happened: the demo abruptly ended in the middle of the level... not even a goal tape! I felt robbed. It really killed the experience for me because there was no reward at the end of this trudging - no save file to submit to the site, no pat on the back saying U DID IT, nadda.
If you're brave, go at this with no savestates. The challenge itself is the reward.
