Here's another one-level hack but unlike many of the other one-hit-wonders here, the level is about the length of any other level you'd expect in a regular Mario game.

This hack has a little gimmick: instead of you finding powerups, you gather coins to buy them from little stations of blocks in the level. Ultimately, anything that isn't the Fire Flower isn't the right choice here because for the price of 30 coins to see the blocked-off stuff that none of the other perks let you have access to, you can't go wrong. The hack is toward the easy side, but if you struggle, buy the star powerup. It won't work on the Thwomp boss, though.

There's another gimmick associated with the bitter cold other than the ice blocks: little puffs of cold air that if you touch, you will freeze momentarily. For some reason though, I find that running right into them actually helps me land right on top of enemies better rather than setting me up to be killed with nothing I can do about it. These puffs are easily avoided.

Well, not entirely - the palette and ExGFX are crude. I like the FG dirt, but the mounds of snow have an outline on the bottom that appear double-thick and no distinctive shading (it's too subtle) or outline around them. The background itself has a sky whose colors seem reverse of what they should be (blue clouds, white sky vs. white clouds, blue sky?) I think it would've been a lot better not only with a palette that contrasted well against the foreground but even more detail, actually... and I don't usually ask for that in a tileset. I'm looking at a wall of brown and pale bluish-white.

The design itself is okay. Other than the gimmicks, there's nothing truly memorable about it. What really drags it down is the lack of anything to do in the swimming segments.

Worth a play when you're feeling the holiday spirit and a desire to see a snowy oneshot.
