Yoshi's Strange Quest (V1.4 in progress)

Hey guys! Guess what day it is. :)

If you guys guessed that today is the day that YSQ is finally 100% completed, and that I'm going to begin with the official beta test of YSQ, then you guessed right! Also, guess what that means as well? It means that I'm finally going to accept beta testers for YSQ, too! For any of you that wanted to beta test YSQ, now is your chance. For those of you that want to, let me know here or in a PM here or on Youtube/deviantART/FurAffinity and I'll add you to the list below.

1). Javier (SMWC)
2). Tyrex_Kyuris (FA)
3). Yoshondue (DA)
4). ToonLinkTheFairy (SMWC)
5).
6). Pidgopidgey (FA)
7). ChaosElsie (FA)
8). smwforever45 (DA)
9).
10). Ruberjig (SMWC)
11).
12). ChrisSEMA (SMWC)
13). rumpg46691 (SMWC)
14). TheSuperRotom (SMWC)
15). CrystallineCovenant (SMWC)
16). lordkronos100 (SMWC)
17).
18). sstrngmnm (SMWC)
19). Sakuya Izayoi (SMWC)
20). TheSowhart (SMWC)
21). TheDeath1 (DA)
22).
23). reynoldse53able (SMWC)
24). SMB64 (DA)
25). YoshiGaming (SMWC)
26). pakkie (SMWC)
27).
28).
29).
30).

Now, here's how things are going to work this time around:

- Unlike previous times where I had others beta test my hacks, anyone on Youtube, deviantART, or FurAffinity that is interested can beta test YSQ, not just anyone that has an account here.

- I'm also going to allow more people to test it as well. If more than 15 people want to beta test, then I'll increase the size of the list (up to a point).

- Once I'm done beta testing YSQ to make sure it's possible to 100% the game (which I'm going to do so twice. Once to find and fix any bugs I come across, and again to test the patch and how YSQ works on a real SNES), I'll give the beta testers a copy of YSQ. I need to ensure that it's at least possible to do so, and that there aren't any game breaking bugs that would occur by accident.

- Your job is to tell me about any bugs you come across, so that I can potentially fix them, as well as telling me if the level design is good or about sections that are way too hard that need to be made a bit easier.

- If you have a Skype account, then you ought to tell me what it is so I can send you a contact request. That way, you can quickly tell me about anything I need to fix or improve in some way (or you can tell me about a specific thing you liked or things I did really well in YSQ). If you don't have a Skype account, but you do have a Steam account, then I'll add you to my friends list on Steam instead. If you have neither, then just PM me here or on Youtube/DeviantART/FurAffinity if you need to tell me something. For the people on Skype, I'll set up a group chat specifically for me and the beta testers so that the beta testers have a group discussion about YSQ, as well as having most of the feedback you guys give me in one place (although you can message me privately about something if you want to avoid spoiling something for the others).

- You can use whatever SNES emulator (or an SNES flash cart if you have one) to beta test YSQ that you want. I used BSNES (Compatibility) and an sd2snes flash cart to test YSQ, so it will be good if you guys use other emulators (or a flash cart) to test YSQ.

- In order to be considered done, you must get all 100 exits in YSQ. 100% Yoshi coins isn't required, but you can go for them if you want. I'll add your name to credits.txt and the in-game credits once you've told me that you got 100% exits. If you're going for 100% Yoshi coins, then please give me feedback regarding the Yoshi coin placement (Although, remember that the Yoshi coins are supposed to be hard to get in general or at least require the player to make it through 90-99% of the level without dying, as they are meant to be a challenge for the 100% completionists).

- If you're playing through a switch palace level or a level with a puzzle to it, then you can optionally make a video of you playing through those levels so I can see if you did it the way that was intended. I recommend that you make these videos unlisted or you send me the video file, so that only I can see it.

- Do not give this beta copy of YSQ to anyone else or post it anywhere. This version if for the beta testers only.

- I don't recommend LPing this beta version of YSQ. If you really want to LP YSQ, wait until I post the non-beta version in the waiting to be moderated section of the hack section.

By the way, I should mention that I'm going to be a little busy next week with something, so it will take me a little longer to play through YSQ twice (that's assuming I don't encounter any strange bugs that I have no idea what's causing them, such as this weird bug I encountered the other day while I was playing YSQ a bit on the SNES where the game switched control over to "Luigi" and the game was in Hard Mode, even though I set it on Normal and the Hard Mode patch makes the game 1 player only. Hopefully, re-applying the hard mode patch stopped the former from happening. And I think the latter was caused by the fact that the SRAMExpand patch likes to put garbage values into the RAM addresses it saves in a brand new file, but only on a real SNES, which I fixed by using levelASM to store the correct value to those addresses in level 1C5 and by making the game not save which difficulty level you're playing on). Just thought I'd let you guys know.
My Hacks:

Or is it secretly Monday??? (Dun Dun Duuuunnnn!) XD Just kidding. I just felt like being silly.

But anyway, if you do have the time to play the final version of YSQ once it's out, I'm sure it will be worth your time. Hopefully, you'll enjoy playing through it. :)

I've added you to the list as well. Also, I have a Steam account as well, so you could send me a contact request over there instead. My Steam username is the same as my Youtube username.

That's good to hear that YSQ is your favorite hack. :) Hopefully, you'll enjoy V1.3 even more than you did for V1.2. Anyway, I've also added you to the list.

Also, so far, I've played through every reachable level up until the first level in World 7 on the first playthrough, if you guys are wondering how far I am. I found a few bugs here and there, but I've been able to fix most of them so that when I go to test the patch and play YSQ on an actual SNES, I won't have to interrupt my second playthrough because something made the game impossible to beat.
My Hacks:
Mario's Strange Quest V1.6
Yoshi's Strange Quest V1.3 / V1.3.1 Beta 4.6
Mario & Yoshi's Strange Quests (2/10/2023 Build)

Other stuff:
My SMW/SMAS/SMAS+W disassembly
Yoshifanatic's Discord Server: A place for fans of my stuff and/or Yoshi to chat with others.
I played 2.0 and liked it so I'd like to Beta Test.
There used to be stuff in this footer, but it's all gone now.
V1.2 was visually stunning with on-the-spot variation of level Design, so I'd gladly traverse in the expanded realm of V1.3 for marvelling in the landscapes and searching for unpolished diamonds to be brightened (fixed), you can count me in!
I would absolutely love a chance to test this great hack. Please oh Please sir :D

Since I enjoyed your "beta" version (v 1.2) so much, could I possibly be considered for beta-testing purposes?
The meaning of life is 42 because potato.

I don't feed trolls. I feed THEM to Cthulhu. He finds them DELICIOUS.
If you still have place for testers, I'd like to beta-test it as well. Maybe it could partly repay for the stuff I haven't done.

Have you made a request on Steam.
Sounds nice but how he throw eggs??
Real quick, even though I haven't logged on in about a week, I'm just letting you guys know that I'm still beta testing YSQ. Currently, I'm at the World 6 castle on my second playthough, so I'm nearly done beta testing. I found quite a few bugs during my first playthough, but I managed to fix most of them (I'll mention the ones that aren't fixed below). But anyway, it won't be much longer before I'm done and you guys who volunteered will get to beta test YSQ.

Bugs:
- Any one mentioned in the readme.
- In House of Confusion, closing the message box causes layer 3 zeros to fill the screen for a split second. (There's not much I can do to fix this. It was either this, or having no status bar in the first room).
- Error Message 1 can be seen in Yoshi Woods by talking to the 2 yellow Yoshis standing side by side after leaving the bonus room in Yoshi Woods (I found this one on my second playthough, so this bug will be in the beta V1.3 version, but won't be in the released V1.3 version).
- The star doesn't appear in the status bar when all 100 exits are gotten (I have no idea why this isn't working, since it worked fine before. In the beta copy, there's going to be an awkward looking 100 instead).
- In the levels with the parallax scrolling HDMA, layer 2 will sometimes jump to a different position during the level fade-in. I don't think there's much I can do about this.

I haven't, because I have no idea what your Steam name is. You should send me a request on Steam, since I already told you what my Steam name is (It's yoshifanatic1, which is the same as my Youtube username).

My name on Steam is only Chris (Germany). Sending 18 hours before.
I finished beta testing YSQ twice now, so now you guys who volunteered to beta test will now get to play the beta copy of YSQ V1.3. :) For those of you that told me what your Skype name was, I'll add you to a Skype group, and you can download it there, otherwise I'll just message you and give you the download link separately. Also, even though I'm now going to give the beta testers a copy, I'm still going to accept more beta testers, so if some of you really wanted to beta test YSQ, let me know.

I've accepted that request now. I'll be sending you the download link to YSQ V1.3 through there.

I have Skype. I used it before to talk to my friend, superwiidude, who LPed your previous hack, Mario's Strange Quest, before.
Layout by piranhaplant.
Thinking about making a Rainbow Magic thread at the Media forum.
I'm using the following cheat codes on my playthrough of yoshifanatic's game (not yet resorting to Lunar Magic--possibly later):

Moon Jump (DD2C-AF6F)
Multijump (6D2E-0FDF)
Infinite HP (0x00EAE97A 0x0000001E)
Invincibility (0x00EADE17 0x00000003, 0xD0000000 0x10000040, 0x00EADE17 0x00000000)

EDIT: Do NOT apply chdata's Disable Death patch, as it will make a certain level (cough *gravitygrove* cough) impossible to beat. That's as far as I've gotten so far, so I need to remove the patch to continue any further.

It appears that yoshifanatic has made this hack a veritable anti-cheating minefield (many levels are still easy to die in or make impossible to complete, even with complete invincibility, multi-moon jumps, and infinite HP), but if he wants us to sweat a bit as we beta-test his hack, so be it.

If every level were a simple walk in the park, what would be the fun in it? I like challenges, but I absolutely loathe those which seem determined to endlessly resist my (frustrated) attempts to solve them.

There's a fine line SMW hackers have to precariously balance on: the line between challenging levels with fair difficulty, and levels seemingly designed to deliberately frustrate the player with all kinds of unfair traps, enemy placement and completion conditions (cough *keyplains* cough).

I did end up completing Key Plains, but you have to really think outside the box on this one.

Yoshifanatic's hack appears to be designed to break the player's firmly established expectations and habits, and to make him/her think outside the box, with tongue firmly planted in cheek (TONS of fourth-wall "pipe bombs" scattered throughout the game--just look everywhere to find them! ;) )
