Entry 1 is in third place as of now. I'm not sure if people really like it or are voting for it as a joke (likely the latter.) Yes, it's not outright bad but it is literally the most basic possible overworld that isn't full of junk tiles or bad palettes.

I might as well vote for 17 since everyone likes it so much.

You don't need to follow what others do if you don't want to, you just have to choose what you think is best.

Either way, there are a lot of outstanding entries their authors have made, especially 3 and 17, but I still haven't decided as to which of them I should pick mostly for that reason. I'm going to come to a conclusion soon.

E: gotta go for 17.

Maybe it's just me, but I feel some of there overworlds are very similar in style. They don't look bad for the most part though.

I like the water coast effect in 8, but it's really not that great. And 14 is creative, especially the best and worst worlds. 17 definitely gets my vote though.
Reveiw time!

#1: Cool layout, but suffers from loads of nothing.
#2: Somewhat chaotic main map, and the paths on the 2nd submap feel out-of-place.
#3: Remove Mario and Luigi, and it would be the best-they don't look that great... 2nd place.
#4: My only three complaints are the island pallete, the brightest grass pallete(both on the main map), and the level cluttering at the start. Otherwise, great job.
#5: I feel the pipes are too spread out-and out of curiosity, WHY is Luigi's start position in the middle of the lava? I do like the colors, though.
#6: The best map. I mean, look at it! It's so cool!
#7: Slightly cluttered, but ties with #9 for the best/worst worlds.
#8: Cool main map(although the pallete is a bit iffy), but has some poor submap design choices. Looks hard to move quickly to the submaps, too.
#9: This one has the best submaps, but the main map is even MORE chaotic than #2!
#10: Doesn't fit the whole vanilla theme, and the wall texture is too busy to be eye-pleasing. If this one isn't chosen for this contest, I want the author to make a hack using it.
#11: Same as #1, there's too much nothing.
#12: Somewhat eye-searing palletes, and a wonky perspective.
#13: There's a HUGE useless wall where paths for faster level access could go! (Meme version: You got your huge wall in my cool overworld!)
#14: Sorta spread out, but takes the cake for the best use of vanilla-themed ExGFX. Also, WHAT THE HECK is with the worst world?
#15: The best world's graphics feel out-of-place, and the factory world is very messy-looking.
#16: The 3rd overworld with loads of nothing. Also, the last three submaps are HORRENDOUS!!!
#17: The 3rd best overall-would have been at least 2nd, but the best world is off-putting to me.

I have an idea for the next contest!

What if the people entering the contest get to choose what maps they want to draw. For example, let say that someone didn't feel like doing an entire overworld and just wanted to focus on the Best 8 sub-map. So they just focus on that one map and submit it.

Basically what I'm saying is that maybe for the next one people don't have to submit an entire entry and just what they want to submit. Then the maps are voted on a individual basis.

Also on entry number 17 the star drawing needs to be re-drawn for the final version.

I second every word you said. If that idea would be implemented, we could have... Wait for it...

Maybe it's social commentary or something, and people are trying to prove a point. I don't know what kind of point they're trying to prove, but whatever it is, it's probably really terrible.

No offense to the creator of entry 1, by the way. You did your best (hopefully!)

Fantastic designs throughout! Well done all.

Hm, I was going to say something about there not being nearly enough space to give 50 levels a fair representative shake on the overworld, but then it turns out that (64x64/50) gives a hair less than 82 8x8 tiles per level to work with, which honestly should be more than enough to do such a thing without having to resort to blatant signage (as #14's doing). Even with paths, transitional areas, spaces that aren't filled with junk for a change, and the level tiles themselves taken into consideration, that's a lot of space that's being squandered in favor of unneeded tightness. #3's really terrible in that respect, bunched up in the bottom half while letting a good portion of the map be underutilized as 'sea, also there's clouds over it'. Seriously, a quarter of the map's being taken over for all of 8 levels, and that's a bit stupid.

On that note, I feel some degree of general restraint and is needed here. Just because you have the ability to caricaturize every single level doesn't mean that you should; trying to do that just ends up with a big awkward mess, and that's not something you want to strive for.

God, I sure hope you're not being serious here.

yeah, i feel the same way. it's nice, but definitely not necessary; a very general idea is better (like in smw)

I should have something witty to put here (even if it's just to update dated info), shouldn't I?

These were being submitted for a contest- if you are entering on the intention of winning, don't pull any punches.

entry 3 its awesome
Like others, I like 3 and 17...

But I'm gonna have to give the edge to 17, just because the ice/sky separation makes a bit more sense in 17.

Why yes I tried to figure out where my level's position was in all the entries.
It was a tough decision for me. I was between 3 & 17 but I decided to vote for 17 in the end. The HDMA is amazing! #smw{<3}
There were quite a few here that really impressed me. In the end, I had to give a slight edge to #3, though. Also I see it's a close race between 3 and 17, so that's exciting.
I really like how Entry #9 has VLDC written on the Map. A very Nice Touch. However, looking at the other entries, my vote goes to #17.
I love 3, it gets my vote.
meh
Honestly? I prefer #17. More innovative, using elements such as parallax HDMA and layer 3 plus amazing idea on underwater castle. The entry #3 while the 'normal' maps are very good, I didn't like best/worst world, specially the latter. The worst world is a damn mess of confusion, I can't understand what is map, path, sprite, etc, etc. As well I can consider #17 best map a bit meh, but not too bad.

Can someone please explain me how the underground city effect. Is it a cold frozen over piece of water such that a small part of it is broken off allowing you to see under the water. Or is it like X-ray vision and we can SEE through the water like superman.
