That one Christopher Robin hack (UPDATES PAUSED)

Kaizo

Welcome to the conclusion of my hard hack series.
I didn’t think I was gonna ever want to start it either but ever since sometime after Item Abuse 3 I have developed this nagging feeling that 3 seems like a perfect number to end a series on (I feel like any more is excessive) and that was kinda accelerated by this conversation on one of my videos for Mario's Ascetic Adventure. Before, I was adamant about not wanting to make it because MMD2 got to be too hard for me to even feel like playtesting and I just kinda assumed that the next one had to be another sequel difficulty spike or else it would suck, and I assumed I wouldn’t have nearly enough ideas. I eventually realized that a plot similar to Foxtrot Uniform might work better here, so this is basically a hack of my cancelled Foxtrot Uniform hack.
If you're wondering about the difficulty, I am not planning to make it as hard as MMD2. It will probably be at least as difficult as much of the MMD1 game proper. I do plan to make it just as creative, if not more. While I don't want to feel like I’m losing my credibility, the desire to play with and show off ideas I have fun with seems to be winning.
Another reason I didn’t want to make a MMD3 before was because I slightly cringe at '__ must die' titles but at the same time, using that title also gives a sense of power and motivation, kinda like a buzz. Kinda reminds me of this one article I read about how the specific online aliases we pick can help shape our online personalities.
I think that one comment someone made (on the Yoshi Must Die video) about being tired of those titles might have contributed, but then what kind of a role model would I be if I desisted just because a couple people didn’t like that title? I mean, that is entirely subjective. Still tho, I eventually realized that using an officially shortened title might alleviate that as well as staying true to the style.
I would say this is definitely going to be my (for real) final SMW hack, but you probably won’t believe me anymore since I’ve said the very same thing before, but I am looking forward to Mario Maker and I feel like I won’t be going back to LM if I play it, unless maybe I’m still not finished with Luigi’s Challenge by that time. It’s not because I think I will like it better. It has more to do with feeling comfort in the fact that Mario Maker is a completely legal way to make Mario levels. Suddenly this feels like Polaris (which was my final NL1 coaster) all over again. It'll probably be a while before I can get a Wii U.

Screenshots of the first 2 stages, and then some:

The evil overlooker. Inspired by these images and Winnie the Pooh Home Run Derby.

I’ve wanted to use Christopher Robin as a main villain for a while now, but I never actually got around to it until now. It was gonna be the final boss of E=MC Hammer, and then Foxtrot Uniform before I cancelled those. I also thought about using a Christopher Robin boss in Mario vs the 4th Wall as well.

Fear Fall. There is absolutely nowhere to permanently stand in the level.

This part is spent entirely in free-fall, hence the level name.

A unique feature that’s not visible from the screenshot, but the death music is replaced with this. Now you know why I made that C3 request. One little problem tho: the game pauses for a split second right before dying.

Mine Cart Snake Pit. It’s an amalgamation of the DKC Mine Cart stages and the snake pit from Battletoads. Originally titled ‘Turbo Snake Pit.’
This hack will focus more on gimmick iterations and less on glitch abusing puzzles, all while maintaining difficulty. That doesn't mean there will be absolutely no glitch abuse.

Rocket Barrel Rage, which is a few levels later. Believe it or not, I have found other challenges involving the rocket barrel besides just going to the right and dodging stuff all the time.

If anyone’s worried about if I run out of ideas, I am making this hack kinda like how book authors tend to plan out entire story arcs before writing and publishing their books. In fact, I already have a head start on making the final stage and the ending.

Awesome! Looking forward to this!

I think that the problem with sequels with Kaizo and pit hacks is that people expect the next one to be harder, which I think is wrong. There's nothing wrong with making it the same difficulty, or even making it easier in the name of creativity.

Thanks. I am kinda nervous that little tidbit about the general public might make it harder to want to advertise this hack, even tho SMB3 was easier than The Lost Levels. I felt like some of the later levels in MMD2 weren't nearly as fun for me to play as to watch, and I am nowhere near ready to even want to make another hack that's way more fun to watch than to play. So I think I want to aim for being both fun to watch and fun (for me at least) to play throughout. I wonder if there's a maximum difficulty I can achieve while still being fun for me to play and 'rehearse'?

Also, it's possible there may be more levels than either of the previous 2.

Welp, when this is finished and I play it, I hope my keyboard doesn't have bits of brain on it.

Good luck with that! They will need.
(My thoughts after reading the thread's title: "Wait a minute, I thought you would never make a hack with such a name after speculating")

This looks awesome so far. I wonder how else you're going to plan around the concept of those Skull Karts, since the screenshots that involve it have gotten quite the creativity with them. It's a shame to see that Foxtrot Uniform is cancelled, but at least you're implementing most of what it had in this hack. Good luck with its development!

Have you seen my SMW custom level 'Demonator'? Some parts will probably remind you of that.

I'm kinda thinking there might be a certain 'sweet spot' or two in terms of how fun I have with a hack or my personal opinion of it after the fact versus how difficult I make it. I have found that trying to make Kaizo-lite (or just a hair above) and being proud of it is more difficult than going all out in unfairness yet not quite being perfectly precise, and being proud of it. I feel like going below a certain difficulty, even if it's Kaizo, limits my creativity. Gbreeze is probably better at making creative, easier Kaizo hacks than I am. We have our respective niches.
I also don't want to make a level I'm particularly proud of and is entertaining to watch but is also borderline too hard and unfun for me, the creator.
I think that coming up with unfair tricks that I would deem too hard for Foxtrot Uniform would help justify the decision to cancel it, since I think making both this and FU would be a bit much.

Mario Must Die 3 confirmed! Sadly Half-life 3 may be canceled...

The difficulty issue reminds me a lot of how Five Nights at Freddy's 3 is easier than the first two because it focused more on strategy rather than jumpscares; in your case, this game focuses on creativity rather than difficulty. Some people appreciate it, some get disappointed. Still, I can't wait to see how these levels play out.

IDK if I wanna keep the exact title anymore, actually. If not, then the current title is a placeholder.
I wanna tie it to the series somehow still tho (it does have insane level design plus similar kind of humor in the opening message), and I want it to be an indication of being a threequel that speaks for itself, but that's kinda hard if there's almost no plot. Some ideas I had:
-Mario Must Die 3 Dies (I recall seeing a hack in the hack removal log with that name tho). Kinda like how The Impossible Quiz Book has 'Impossible Quiz 3' crossed out.
Okay, so that's a little less than "some."

Intrigue inspiration.

IDK what I wanna do (possible second thoughts?), so here's a straw poll. Even after all the justification in the OP, I still have this feeling of not looking forward to posting any videos of this hack. I feel like if I were to post a video called "MMD3 stage _" I might get a zerg rush of comments about "I thought you weren't making this" or backlash about "this sux cuz I was expecting something more like the Abuse and Die series."

Level design itself will still the same tho, so don't think I'm making this just solely to expand.

I'm not sure how you want to make MMD3. I think they only wait and measure and not rush things, as I should sometimes.

Sorry a little mistake.
Decided to change the hack’s name to Cthulhu Robin’s Rage, you know, since he’s the primary antagonist, and I felt like using a title that still sounds insane. I feel like if I stick with MMD3, while it sounds insane too, would cause me to not look forward to making videos for it as much.

Oh, and I don’t care about the straw poll anymore, TBH. I kinda regret it now. I can think for myself.

Death Water Oasis. There is an air meter but I can’t show it yet cuz I have not inserted the graphic for it yet.

I like the new name. Whatever keeps you interested in making your levels. If it's not fun to make, then there's no point. I can understand that making a MMD3 really limits your options and kinda forces you to make something similar to the first two (and probably more difficult) so I think changing it is a good idea.

Why not have a special world where it's almost pit?

I have decided to pause updates for this hack for the time being while I work on it in silence, and that Cthulhu Robin, while it sounds insane, I doubt it rolls off the tongue quite as easily. I apologize for being indecisive about the title. Since I don’t want to risk driving you insane with changing things a number of times, I don’t care if you close this thread for the time being or leave it open.
I do have an overall vision for this hack in terms of design but I don’t want to make any more updates until I have more things set in stone (this includes a possible preview video). Things like the hack title (changing it back isn’t out of the question. I just want an insane sounding title), intro, peak difficulty, and whether or not to use the multi-midway patch (IDK if the levels will be long enough to feel like using it. Might anyway if I want to have the spawn point in a different level number.)

I am beginning to wonder if making a thread for this hack was premature.
