Welcome to the conclusion of my hard hack series.
I didn’t think I was gonna ever want to start it either but ever since sometime after Item Abuse 3 I have developed this nagging feeling that 3 seems like a perfect number to end a series on (I feel like any more is excessive) and that was kinda accelerated by this conversation on one of my videos for Mario's Ascetic Adventure. Before, I was adamant about not wanting to make it because MMD2 got to be too hard for me to even feel like playtesting and I just kinda assumed that the next one had to be another sequel difficulty spike or else it would suck, and I assumed I wouldn’t have nearly enough ideas. I eventually realized that a plot similar to Foxtrot Uniform might work better here, so this is basically a hack of my cancelled Foxtrot Uniform hack.
If you're wondering about the difficulty, I am not planning to make it as hard as MMD2. It will probably be at least as difficult as much of the MMD1 game proper. I do plan to make it just as creative, if not more. While I don't want to feel like I’m losing my credibility, the desire to play with and show off ideas I have fun with seems to be winning.
Another reason I didn’t want to make a MMD3 before was because I slightly cringe at '__ must die' titles but at the same time, using that title also gives a sense of power and motivation, kinda like a buzz. Kinda reminds me of this one article I read about how the specific online aliases we pick can help shape our online personalities.
I think that one comment someone made (on the Yoshi Must Die video) about being tired of those titles might have contributed, but then what kind of a role model would I be if I desisted just because a couple people didn’t like that title? I mean, that is entirely subjective. Still tho, I eventually realized that using an officially shortened title might alleviate that as well as staying true to the style.
I would say this is definitely going to be my (for real) final SMW hack, but you probably won’t believe me anymore since I’ve said the very same thing before, but I am looking forward to Mario Maker and I feel like I won’t be going back to LM if I play it, unless maybe I’m still not finished with Luigi’s Challenge by that time. It’s not because I think I will like it better. It has more to do with feeling comfort in the fact that Mario Maker is a completely legal way to make Mario levels. Suddenly this feels like Polaris (which was my final NL1 coaster) all over again. It'll probably be a while before I can get a Wii U.
Screenshots of the first 2 stages, and then some:
The evil overlooker. Inspired by these images and Winnie the Pooh Home Run Derby.
I’ve wanted to use Christopher Robin as a main villain for a while now, but I never actually got around to it until now. It was gonna be the final boss of E=MC Hammer, and then Foxtrot Uniform before I cancelled those. I also thought about using a Christopher Robin boss in Mario vs the 4th Wall as well.
Fear Fall. There is absolutely nowhere to permanently stand in the level.
This part is spent entirely in free-fall, hence the level name.
A unique feature that’s not visible from the screenshot, but the death music is replaced with this. Now you know why I made that C3 request. One little problem tho: the game pauses for a split second right before dying.
Mine Cart Snake Pit. It’s an amalgamation of the DKC Mine Cart stages and the snake pit from Battletoads. Originally titled ‘Turbo Snake Pit.’
This hack will focus more on gimmick iterations and less on glitch abusing puzzles, all while maintaining difficulty. That doesn't mean there will be absolutely no glitch abuse.
Rocket Barrel Rage, which is a few levels later. Believe it or not, I have found other challenges involving the rocket barrel besides just going to the right and dodging stuff all the time.
If anyone’s worried about if I run out of ideas, I am making this hack kinda like how book authors tend to plan out entire story arcs before writing and publishing their books. In fact, I already have a head start on making the final stage and the ending.
