Noted!
Originally posted by levelengineHowever for my drawing thread, despite having put 12 hours of time into it, was freaking out that "Eevee's gonna win" just because of popularity. So what was the point of trying?
All of the ones (Eevee, Wakana, Vitor, S.N.N., Mirann, Gloomier, etc.), I don't hate you. In fact I admire the hard work and devotion you put in your projects and the site, but this popularity thing leads everyone to vote for the same people all the time and forgetting while what's being praised, something else is left out. The site has many talented users, but there could be even more, as I've seen some users who have the talent and prowess the ones have, but simply don't make it.
I voted neither for you nor Eevee, because I needed my slots and knew Eevee would win anyway, but if you put yourself on the spot like this and try to claim that the only reason Eevee won and you didn't is popularity then I feel like it's valid to point this out:
Eevee had fun with her thread. The art isn't picasso but it has character and the requests were interpreted nicely and there was humor. On top of that, Eevee completed a ridiculous amount of requests.
On the other hand, while I'm sure you put as much effort into it as Eevee (probably more LOL), your art isn't picasso either and your thread had way less character. It was just one of the art threads, and in my personal unofficial opinion not the best one. I'd compare yours more to Zekrom's, just that yours had worse drawings.
So to summarize, while I'm sure popularity had SOME say in this, I wouldn't feel bad telling you that your thread was just worse. I wouldn't ever go out of my way to say that, but you kinda asked for it by putting down other's work first.
Also I put Wavee in every category so you're pointing at the wrong nerds LOL
Originally posted by levelengineOriginally posted by leodAs a rule of thumb, only actual hacking content gets ropeboxed. Especially not drawing threads cause there's legitimately 5 of those by now and it'd be rude to feature one but not the others.
Seeing this made me question that C3 is really as inviting towards
all types of content like it's made out to be. Sure there were too many drawing threads this year (5 or 6?), but not being eligible to have your content showcased no matter how good it is puts you at a disadvantage, and if you worked really hard on it, it makes you feel insulted that good work is being swept away for being "different".
One last note; I initially misread what leod said, and was surprised to see my Castlevania 3 hacking project up there in the ropebox, despite being unfinished, and now it makes me happy to see a relatively unknown title in terms of hacking in retrospect to the situation with the drawing threads. This makes me have hope that the underdogs of the community can become well-known and acknowledged.
Well... you kinda responded to yourself with that last note, and I said it before:
The ropebox isn't for the cream of the crop of C3 releases. People will see those just by virtue of having a million replies and constantly being bumped up to the top of the C3 forum. It's to give people a chance to discover the underdogs.
The ropebox is a spotlight for threads that are getting very little attention, with manual curation to make sure they actually have effort put into them by me. Which basically just means I didn't ropebox meme threads.
Not featuring drawing threads specifically was my own decision and was simply to avoid making people feel bad thinking their art isn't as good as other people's. Layout request threads got the same treatment, albeit I never said so because nobody ever asked and there weren't as many.
Another very important reason for not spotlighting non-hacking content is simply that the ropebox is featured atop every single page across the entire website.
Most of SMWC's traffic is here for the actual SMW hacking, not to participate in more community focused threads, like drawing or layout or even meme threads, so spotlighting things most people can enjoy in that regard just makes sense.
The spotlighted threads are chosen by what is getting buried, but that is to help users browsing find those threads, not necessarily to make the authors feel better. Both would come out to the same result and that's great, but the incentive is the former.
Like, imagine going to a spider forum about all things spiders because you're interested in spiders, right, and then you see there's a big S4 event (Spider Site Showoff Section) where a lot of people put up projects and you look at the spotlight and it's an ad for Lootcrate. Or someone's self-made telescope. That'd feel kinda weird, right, cause you're there for spiders?
Yeah, that's probably how people that come here from googling "super mario world sucks give me better levels" would feel if they saw a "layout" thread in the spotlight.
Imagine if all that traffic from AGDQ that almost killed the site that one day got to see
Lespna's Backwards Videos featured up there, that would've been the weirdest thing.
Your layout has been removed.
