LuLu's Groovin' Adventure

Update: I'll follow this forum's examples and use the first post to show hack's progress.
Last Update: 31/05/2017 - 14:41

Hello, Everyone!

LuLu's Groovin' Adventure is my new project which I swear I won't abandon like my 129837986 others!

This is the story of a humble plumber, Luigi Luistar, who was having fun with his girlfriend, Daisy Flowerheart, on a festival when they saw an tent with an excentric ornament. When they entered in, they only found a pipe on the center. Suddenly, a strong wind came out and both were sucked in.

When Luigi woke up, he was in a strange island and no signal of Daisy. This is how the adventure starts!

EP #2: Green Day Forest

Offspring Fields

A generic grassland. I mixed some graphics from SMW and SMB to give more details to the level.

Soon, I will upload other levels and a piece from the overworld. Any feedback will be acceptable o/

See You Space Cowboy!

The game characters look like they're a distant generation of the original ones (kinda like in Zelda series, in which they're spiritually the same, but in fact are different people), which is pretty interesting. Also, nice band references for level/world names.

I like the looks of your first level. It seems fun to play as traditional 1-1s tend to be. Only one little nitpick of mine is regarding the grey blocks' outline color - I'd suggest changing to black for more cohesion.

This looks promising, so keep up the good work and good luck.

I'm loving the choconilla aesthetics of this, but I agree with Blind Devil about the gray blocks. Their outlines should be black. I got most, but not all, of the band references due to having grown up in the 90s listening to those bands. This definitely looks like something I'd consider checking out whenever a demo is released.

To be honest, I never thought of them in this way, but I liked the idea. Thanks for the inspiration, haha :)

Offspring Fields is actually a world with one single level since I didn't have many ideas for a grassland world and didn't want to make repetitive levels. So I made a long one with everything it has to offer and some surprises, of course :3

Maybe the one you didn't know is Millencolin because they're the least known from them. They're a nice melodic hardcore band. You should check them out o/

Updates:

I agree with both of you about the gray block outline colors, but I changed them and I felt kinda strange when they are grouped together. Maybe I'm not used to it:

I also made a sketch of the three first overworlds: Offspring Fields, Green Day Forest and Cyan Oasis. I changed some palletes to suit better on my tastes :9 The trees were also made by myself!

Offspring Fields, as said before, is one single grassland level;
Green Day Forest has 3 levels and a Forest Temple. You can access the temple after beat one of these levels, but you can enter in only after beat all of them!
Finally, Cyan Oasis has only 2 levels, but I will talk about them later ;)

Next time, I will try to design new levels and another part of overworld.

Thanks for the Support! o/

The blocks look perfect now IMO, and that Overworld, while simple, looks quite nice as well. I'm assuming this is either going to be a short hack or will have several more Worlds than the average hack to allow more level variety.

EDIT: I just thought of a World name. How does "Smashing Pumpkin Patch" sound for a Halloween/haunted world name?

There's no way that'd fit.

That's the idea. Unfortunately, I don't have much free time to focus on rom hacking because of college and work. Therefore, the only way I found to finish a project is making a short one. I estimated 30 levels for this hack, but I also intend to explore their maximum capacity. So, expect long and funny (I hope so) levels, like the YI ones.

About the OW, I intend to build it little by little since I want to focus on the levels too. Maybe I will release a demo after completing these three areas.

And I liked the name idea since I didn't planned a Haunted world so far, but I liked "Three Days Grave" too :v "Smashing Pumpkins Patch" could be a level name, maybe :)

Hello, Everyone!

Updates:

I have just finished the first level from Green Day Forest:

This level is full of hungry Piranha Plants which want to eat you raw, rare, medium rare, medium, medium done, well done, toasted, baked, etc. Be careful!

I intended to put some YI graphics for decoration, but I don't know whether they will be clashy. What do you think?

Piranha Plants, Piranha Plants Everywhere!

I really like making forest worlds and I always think they are never good enough. I hope these levels will be fine to you. Next step is building the other forest levels and your secrets.

Welcome to the Jungle!

I find the outlines of the YI objects a bit too thick, but otherwise it looks fine.
Looking good far. Have you thought about using a Vanilla inspired custom tileset for your forest levels? It allows for use of slopes and corner tiles which might add some more variety to the level structure.
I don't mind the lack of slopes but if you ever need some, there are actually some pretty solid ones in the GFX section for the original forest tileset.

The level seems pretty nice from what I can see, but the foreground could be a bit brighter so it stands out more, it kinda blends in with the BG right now.

I tried to make them thinner, but I didn't like the results. Maybe I'll keep using the SMW tiles until I find something better.

Thanks for the advice and links. I chose to keep the original tiles because I liked the "stairs" I made using the woods and the ground. However, I intend to use slopes on cave and mountain levels in the future.

About the pallete, I wanted to make it dark since it is a forest with low light, but I can lighten them a little.

Thanks for Supporting o/

Hello, Everyone!

It's been a while since I posted something because I had real work to do this week, but I could make some new stuff in the spare time.

First of all, I made the Piranha Plant level FG a little brighter as Aeon suggested:

I also removed the YI graphics and decided using other SMW graphics improvised such as that bigger grass on the screenshot.

And, for new content, this is the first half of Green Day Forest Track 2: The Swamp.

I changed the tides' pallete to match to the ambient. I knew that the status bar would change too, but I don't mind :)

Yeah, I forgot to change Piranha Plant's butt pallete

Although OW forest pallete is all green, I wanted to work with different pallets to make the levels more unique.

Next time, I'll bring this level's second half.

My Name Is Mud!

Hello, Amigo!

After spending some time in another city and looking for a job at mine, I finally could finish Green Day Forest Track #2. Here is it's second half!

This part has plenty fuzzballs, jumping cheep-cheeps and spike balls

Oh, and since this is a swamp based level, there is a lot of moss. Therefor, this level is SLIPPERY, baby!

And you also will have to keep hung on some hopes to advance, just like classic DKC forest levels.

Now, there are two levels left to finish the forest section. I'm looking forward to finish them as soon as possible since I already have ideas for their level design!

Ja Ne! o/

It looks fantastic, but I am no fan of the whole slippery-becaue-of-moss gimmick. Seems like a rather odd thing to do imo.

I made this because I didn't want to make slippery levels only in icy ones. Moss is slippery and there is a lot of it in swamps, so this wasn't a bad idea imo.

Let's try the level when I release a demo. If it's still odd, I will remove it o/

I intend to release one after complete the forest and lake levels (4 levels left). I am focusing on level design right now and after I will apply some patches and some external stuff: new sprites, blocks, layer 3, hdma, collectables, etc.

Sounds neat. If you want me to test it, don't hold back on sending me one.

Thanks for the support. I will let you know when a demo will be available! #tb{^V^}

Updates:

First of all, I made some minor changes on OW, making Cyan Oasis lake sides less flattened and adding a smaller island near main one.

Nevermind the "Offspring Fields 3". I haven't changed the level names yet.

Now It's time to show a brand new level: Green Day Forest Track #3. This level is Lakitu and Wiggler based. Expect plenty of them during gameplay. This is the first half:

Hey, pssst, wanna buy some candie?

I can't stop playing Saria's Song in my head while I make this level. I think I will use this song for it. But don't worry, I won't turn it into a maze :v

Watch Out Lakitu! *drumps.mp3*
