[Full Hack] Mario's Keytastrophe: Rebirth Edition

Oh, wow! This was kinda unexpected, but really pleasant.

As a fan of the old Keytastrophe, I'll be sure to play this one when I can.

ft029: It's a track called "Mess Center" in the music section.
I completed the game yesterday (in 2:34-something I'm ashamed to admit), and it was a lot of fun! Here's a review-ish thing.

The original Keytastrophe "spirit" has obviously been quite transformed, with the lack of musical metaphors and, uh, any plot at all — and we have no reason to expect otherwise just because the name's the same — but I'd argue the general sense of wonder, world-traversing and adventure is still there. The fact that some original Keytastrophe tunes survive probably helps.

The puzzles are much more intricate, and just oozing with creativity compared to the spiritual predecessor. (More than a couple of times I went "whoa, how did he come up with *that*?) They get pretty difficult about halfway through, to the point where I wasn't sure if my sometimes hackish solutions were the intended ones.

The graphics, together with the excellent music, actually work pretty well to establish the sense of "travelling between distinct worlds" I mentioned. The palettes are sometimes decidedly "meh" and I couldn't help but feel the visuals could be polished more, but as far as immersion in a puzzle hack goes it's just fine.

Barring the nostalgia factor, I'd say that (unsurprisingly) the rebirth edition improves on the "original" in virtually every way and is certainly the best C3 entry this time — and in any case, I can now sleep well at night knowing that something called Keytastrophe has been finished. #tb{:)} (not that I couldn't before, mind you, but this certainly isn't hurting.)

I can't believe this hack is still alive. I'll probably give it a try.
It's been a ton of fun to watch this hack go through development over the last few weeks. Because I've been pretty out of the loop for many years in terms of how hack gameplay has evolved, many of the levels were sent to me as videos that showcased the puzzles in action. From the time-stopping mechanics to the death blocks, this hack does a great job of presenting some really interesting and, at times devious, puzzles, and it does a good job of making them easy to replay and master. Though I thought that a couple of the puzzles requiring some exploits/glitches to complete hampered the accessibility and design of the hack a bit, I nevertheless was super impressed with all of the clever ways that puzzles were solved. This hack is definitely worth your time to play.
>SNN actually finishing a full-length hack

lmao april fools was months ago

.....Wait this download link actually works

*ahem*

Anyway, this is pretty fun so far. The puzzles are more challenging and fun than in the original, so that's a plus, but I will admit I miss the story + constant new ASM gimmicks and overworld craziness that the original had. Still, this is great work!

(also yet again going against your title you made years ago where you said you were quitting making hacks for good, heh heh..)
