That explains it

I tend to stick to arrow keys + return + 13QEASDZXC

NES, SMS, GB, GG and TG16 I use Z&X for B&A
SNES I use ASZXQE for ABXYLR
MD and Saturn I use ZXCASD for ABCXYZ (QE for LR)
PS1 is the same as SNES but with 1&3 for L2&R2
etc

I have a QWERTY keyboard for context

I usually use either my keyboard or the Right Joy-con because I don't usually order things like Bluetooth controllers, but I've been thinking about getting an 8bitdo SNES controller, because it looks like the original and has good reviews. Plus it's rechargeable instead of some controllers that use batteries (xBox 360, that's you) for whatever reason lol

I have an 8bitdo controller and it is awesome. I think you should get one.
Expect little to nothing from me for now.

Player graphics are the only thing I do right, so come tell me to make one you want.

I use a USB Logitech.

As far as I'm concerned, Xbox controllers should be shunned due to their nutso audacious move to use the same button names as Nintendo's controllers but all shifted around. It basically punishes you for having learned Nintendo. (I know this doesn't matter when it comes to hacks, but still.)
Very very very shortly, this drab, workaday world and everything in it will be changed forever! Follow us into the golden country, into the empire of the senseless!

Only because I don't know how to plug in my controller into my laptop...

I've adapted to the keyboard as 'S' is my sprint / carry, 'Z' is jump and 'X' is spinjump. All of those keys are close together, so it's easy to navigate.

Xbox 360 every time. It's just what works for me.
In all honesty, I have no idea what I'm talking about.
SEGA Activator motion controller.
I use a keyboard, but I occasionally use my USB SNES controller I bought from Ebay. Ironically the SNES controller is finicky when it comes to levels the rely on doors and vines, so that's another reason I use my keyboard more often.

My keyboard controls are:
ASDF = ABXY
QR = LR
ENTER = START
SHIFT = SELECT
F2 = Save State
F4 = Load State
E = Rewind
` = Fast Forward
, = Slow Down
. = Speed Up

(rip my other userbars momentarily)

After a little bit of trial and error, I got used to a Numpad control scheme. It's a little awkward because all the controls are concentrated in one area of the keyboard but it works for me.

I did once try using an Xbox controller but the buttons weren't very responsive when using it with my laptop so I just switched back to keyboard.
I use a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller (The Xenoblade Chronicles 2 edition for the improved Dpad) for just about emulating any console.

I will only be talking about my Snes9x controls.

X=X (controller)
Y=Y (controller)
A=A (controller)
B=B (controller)

Dpad Up=Dpad Up (controller)
Dpad Down=Dpad Down (controller)
Dpad Left=Dpad Left (controller)
Dpad Right=Dpad Right (controller)

L=L (controller)
R=R (controller)

Start=Plus (controller)
Select=Minus (controller)

Misc Controls

Save State=L2 (controller)
Load State=R2 (controller)
Restart Emulation=ScreenShot button (controller)
Fast Forward=L3 (controller)
Rewind=R3 (controller)

That's The controls for My Snes9x (that I specifically use for romhacks)
I use an Xbox One controller.

I use my keyboard because I don't have anything else, but sometimes (especially when I notice my keyboard's 2KRO doesn't allow me to hold A, Z and X at once) I wish I had a proper controller.
I use an SNES to USB adapter, which does get a little finicky at times but it does the job more than well. There are also enough superfluous buttons that I can use for changing speed in the emulators, savestates, etc, but a standard keyboard layout is a lot better for testing with those things.

I used a keyboard 12 years ago and I still do today...

I used to use a keyboard, but now I use a usb snes controler, just so it feels more authentic. I still think I'm way better at the keyboard, but thats just because I had years of practice on it.
