Flames of Muspell (Level complete)

hey guys welcome to my thread for vldcxi

I'm thinking of a level theme right now. My current idea: A fire-themed level.



I'm also thinking of using a Fishin' Boo as possibly one of the main level gimmicks to keep with the fire theme, and I'll try to make sure he's not cancer.

Feel free to give me thoughts and ideas while I think of some ideas of my own. This theme is tentative, though.

Instead of Fishin' Boo, I went for the Lakitu so that I could use the Hopping Flame. And now all of these flames are the Bowser flames.

I haven't decided upon a name for the level yet, but maybe something along the lines of "Muspell" or something?

Hahaha, no. That name doesn't roll off the tongue at all.

Anyway, update:




I decided the level will revolve around skull rafts, and I guess sinking lava platforms too, I guess. As you go around the level, you'll be relentlessly chased by the fire god Surtr (the lakitu with the fire head) who will attempt to burn you with undying flames. Can you escape his wrath and get out of the realm of Muspell alive?

Aesthetics will be done later; level design comes first.

Well, frankly, if we're talking names that 'roll of the tongue' Flames of Muspell doesn't really do that either.

In any case, I like the direction this is heading! It's rare you find a well made skull ride level so I hope you can join the exclusive club. Finally getting some progress on my level. As you can see it, it'll revolve around any fire-themed enemy or obstacle, but the main gimmick is the skull rafts along with the "Surtr" Lakitu, like I said. You'll have to be extra careful if you don't want to burn to death!

Flames of Muspell is halfway done! I decided to give this place a bit of aesthetic, more specifically, adding in ocean of lava in the background. Hopefully it doesn't look like a sea of energy drinks, or sunset-gradiant water...

The second half will involve Layer 2 shenanigans along with the skull raft, and of course, Surtr still relentlessly chasing you down.

Music suggestions would be nice.

I feel like the level might be a bit too hard and too long, at least for my standards, so if you feel like it could be improved in some way, please don't hesitate to tell me how.

Also, aesthetics come last. Aesthetics are simple to basic for the time being, since I wanted to finish the level itself first before properly decorating with what I can do.

Okay, this level is 100% done and now has an aesthetic, and is fully ready for people to playtest fully! Enjoy, and let me know if there is any bugs, or any thoughts on the level. Is it too hard or too long? Is there a port or a song on SMWCentral that could fit this level? Anything at all? Please let me know; I would really appreciate it!

So I played this level and I must say that it was a little too hard for me. And the biggest problem is lakitu. He is a really irritating obstacle that interrupts very well in platforming. Maybe it's not visible in first half, but he's a big problem in the second. Actually my strategy for first half was quickly destroying lakitu, get as fast as possible feather and steal lakitu cloud. And I wasn't stealing his cloud just to fly, I wanted him to not respawn. In the second half he's a huge problem and I would suggest to delete him from cave section. Actually I played this section without lakitu and it felt much better. Seriously, combining lakitu with smashing yellow walls and smashing lava pillars and other enemies and riding the skull raft makes this section very frustrating.

The second problem is small - at the entrance to the cave (screen 19 of level 9) there is a purple tile that acts as cement block. The same situation is at the exit of cave (screen 0 of level 26) - this one is easier to notice, because you just try to go right and you will be stopped by this tile.

Cave Section

So first of all I suggest to change "Vertical Scroll at Bottom unless Flying/Etc." into "No Vertical Scroll". Reason is simple - if you have feather, you can steal lakitu cloud. And when you fly upward, player can easily notice cutoff at the ceiling.

2 sparkies area - highest sparky circle in air instead around cement block, which makes crossing this place especially annoying.

Fast lava pillars - I would prefer to make them lower. It's very hard to jump over them and even if they act as muncher, because they are fast most of the time I got stuck inside them and died instantly no matter of the powerup I had. Also don't place fireballs between them, it's already very hard to jump over these lava pillars.
