They serve different purpuses. Lunar Magic allows you to make your own hack of SMW, which comes with benefits and with problems. SMBX which is purely a fangame with its own engine and editor:

-Lunar Magic-made hacks come with the SNES limitations regarding graphics, music and processing power, where SMBX doesn't have those limitations.

-ASM allows to brutally expand possibilities regarding SMW hack, which allow you to do anything inside, of course, the boundaries of SNES limitations: new enemies, blocks, bosses, graphics, patches, etc. SMBX, as far as I know, doesn't have those capabilities (I think maybe in the last years and for recent versions of SMBX there is the possibility to write scripts, but I'm still not sure).

They are both equally user-friendly. Maybe SMBX is more user friendly because Lunar Magic has to bear with SNES limitations. All in all, they are both fairly different tools with dofferent purpouses.
I know how this feels. When I first started this whole romhacking / fangame thing, I kept switching between the two.

In the end, Lunar Magic is superior. Not only are you making your own "director's cut" of Super Mario World, but you can even play it as its own game. Super Mario Bros. X is just creating a World Map with a bunch of levels (I guess it's just like Super Mario World...).

Although, SMBX doesn't having the hardware limitations that SMW has, especially in the sound department. In SMBX, I could basically add whatever song I could without worrying about space, but in SMW, not only does it have to be 16-bit, fit inside eight channels, and not exceed echo buffering, but you have to worry about how much space each song takes up.

You can totally edit sprite/block properties and make your own in the newest versions of SMBX, etc., I haven't seen a lot of things made with it yet but from a glance it seems about as free as SMW now.
Very very very shortly, this drab, workaday world and everything in it will be changed forever! Follow us into the golden country, into the empire of the senseless!
Alright! Thanks for the tips.
