Featured Music Nominations/Discussion | 98.5 SMW Music Appreciation Station

Link Thread Closed
I updated the notations list based on these two (1) (2) posts. We'll get to the rest of the post in the thread soon.

New featured songs:
Waterworld - Diving
Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards - Factory Inspection
Celeste - Mirror Magic (B-Side Mix)

Hadron's Asterix & Obelix - The Mountains has been obsoleted here. So we won't add it to the list of what's been featured or not.

Time to feature some more songs!

New featured songs:
Touhou 6: Embodiment of Scarlet Devil - Beloved Tomboyish Daughter
Mega Man 3 - Snake Man's Stage
Radix - Linda's World
Thunder Force IV - Sand Hell

Touhou 5: Mystic Square - Dimension of Reverie will not be featured. The port sounds too muddy and some of the instrument choices are odd.

I'd like to mention those 3 incredible ports from Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles. They all are particularly interesting considering their unsampled nature and accuracy.

Ice Cap Zone Act 1
Lava Reef Zone Act 1
Hydrocity Zone Act 1

Basically, I believe in peace and bashing two bricks together.

I will make this one shorter than the original one:

Batman: The Video Game (NES) - Gotham City Cathedral By Yuzu.

This song is a kickin' ass one, it sounds amazing even if it doesnt uses to many samples.

Hercules (SGB) - Trapped by Duraner HawkEye.

I love how it starts like a simple and odd port, but after a while it gets some catchy tunes (especially the percussion and the choirs).

Yume Nikki - Snow World by Tob.

The title is catchy, because it can fit with space overworlds. It is notorious the effort that Tob made for make this song sound similar to the original one and i appreciate it. Even if i dont know who composed for Yume Nikki, he/she deserves my respects.

After that i will add the other ones that were originally in this post.

It'd also be appreciated if you didn't nominate a billion songs at once, but 1-2 in a post should be fine, maybe 3 but that's a hard maximum.

Trim your list down to just a few songs please. You can edit your post to do this. We really don't want too many nominations at once. Once we get through the few you've selected to nominate, you can make another post.

Hello! So like I said before in a Previous Post on this thread, I tend to listen to some music tracks while I do work on a project or level. And in the process of finding some good tunes to listen to while I do things, I found some really good and highly underrated tracks- some of which I want to recommend for nomination.

The first track I want to nominate here is the track 'Bugdom - Night' by musicalman. This is a really nice and clam track that I found pleasant to listen to when working on thought-based things like schoolwork. I also appreciate this track much because of its clean samples; they sound really smooth- like the track was being played in real-time with actual instruments. Overall, this is a very impressive port that clearly had a lot of love put into it.

The second port that I want to nominate is 'VLDC11 - Crystarp Hollows' by S.N.N. To point out first, this track really envelops the idea of a crystal cave with its soft drums and unique beat. And to add, the instruments here are really nice and pair up unusually well; I would've never thought bells and bit tunes would go well together. In the end, this is a really well-done original track that is a joy to listen to.

(Forget about what I said for the second nomination. I didn't notice that the track was arleady nominated. Sorry.)

It's been already nominated and featured.

Basically, I believe in peace and bashing two bricks together.

The Il Maniero Spettrale songs, as well as Ice Cap and Hydrocity have been featured!

The Final Phase was declined due to its mixing, as its guitar samples run quite loud, as well as the remix not being super impressive in general.

The latest songs have been added to the table for review as well, so keep an eye out for those! While I'm here, though, I'm also adding a new rule:
Quote
- Your nomination must be accepted into the SMW Music section for it to qualify. Please don't nominate songs still in waiting!

It's come up a few times lately, and I've only letting them slip since they were shoe-ins for accepts anyway, but now I'm making the rule official. Thanks for understanding!
Happy Halloween! I did some ghost songs in my last post otherwise I would nominate more here (songs like Secret of Evermore - Deserted Castle or Dark Pyramid).
Oh well, still lots of songs on my list left to choose from!

Sweltering Cave
Very few songs that I've heard in the database can really convey this mood of heat, of danger, oppression, being trapped, etc., especially without requiring custom samples. This track by Moosie144p does all of it beautifully using some clever low-frequency modulation and noise.

Super Mario 3D Land - Special World 8 (Remix)
RedNGreen is back at it again ladies and gentlemen with this super clean port of a bouncy overworld tune from the 3DS.
New nominations:

Etrian Odyssey II - Cherry Tree Bridge
Why the heck did the other EO song get nominated instead of this one? It's a mile better and it conveys relaxing feeling excellently without custom samples. Also, this song was used in the winning VLDCX level.

Mario Kart 64 - Frappe Snowland
This is also unsampled. I'd like to nominate this because of blublublu. The author did marvelous job making this song sound as good as possible with SMW soundfont. It's also pretty true to the original material. I like it so much better than Gamma V's port which is B-major rather than C-major the original version was.

Basically, I believe in peace and bashing two bricks together.

Happy Monday, it's feature time, friends!!

The following songs have all been featured!
Sonic 3 & Knuckles - Lava Reef Zone Act 1
Batman: The Video Game (NES) - Gotham City Cathedral
Bugdom - Night
Super Mario 3D Land - Special World 8 (Remix)
Mario Kart 64 - Frappe Snowland
Etrian Odyssey II - Cherry Tree Bridge

Unfortunately, some other ones have not made the cut.
Yume Nikki - Snow World | The song is pretty short and doesn't have much to it.
Hercules (Super Game Boy) - Trapped | The instrumentation is a little rough to hear, alongside the song itself.
Sweltering Cave | The composition is very basic, and the instrumentation leaves a lot to be desired.

Songs not covered here have been taken into consideration and are being discussed!

Not the ones that were in my extra long post, but here you go!

Yume Nikki - FC Field Area by Tob.

Another one of this timeless gem. Im nominating this one not because the Snow World one was not featured but because Tob made it actually sound more Famicom-ish than the original one. Good work from Kikiyama (for creating this) and Tob (for porting this).

Batman: Return of the Joker - Gotham in Danger By Izuna.

Batman again babe! This song has one of the best samples there and those makes it sound like a kickin' ass arrangement of the NES one. SunSoft was a banger when we are talking about the OST with something related with the Batman.

Pictionary - Title Screen

Kind of familiar with WaterWorld Diving (before it was featured), a song that i cant believe it has not been nominated yet and that actually deserves to be featured, it has an accurate choice of percussion and it was made by Tim Follin, one of the masterminds of VGM!
CUSTOM - Funky Forest
I was surprised as hell at how good unsampled SMW music can possibly be. Track heard in Invinctus which appears to be surprisingly good for the first hack of its author. RednGreen is like ThinkOneMoreTime² or Tim Follin of SMW original songs.

Mega Man 7 - Wily Stage 1 (both versions)
The original song is one of the most emotional tracks from Classic Mega Man games. It's like a throwback to Mega Man 1 where the first Wily theme has that sad feeling conveying the state of Mega Man. Despite being tired of fighting Robot Masters, he doesn't give up and he wants to defeat Wily once and for all. That sadness also comes from yearning for his family. He finally wants to return to them and live a peaceful life.

While the first version uses original samples, the latter is X2-styled, and both do their job pretty well, even though the second one sounds like a pre-existing X2 remix of the song.

One of these songs is playing in my earbuds right now, can you guess which one? It's time to announce some more features!

The following songs have all been featured, yay!
CUSTOM - Funky Forest
Pictionary - Title Screen
Shiny Crystals
Kero Blaster - Time Table
Super Mario RPG - Fight Against a Stronger Monster

The following songs have not been featured, unfortunately.
Yume Nikki - FC Field Area | While nice, there isn't a lot to this port.
Mega Man 7 - Wily Stage 1 (unsampled) | The instrumentation is weaker compared to the original, and there are some slight inaccuracies regarding note lengths and tempo.
Mega Man 7 - Wily Stage 1 (X2 Style) | The instrumentation is weak in certain places, among other issues.
Sonic The Hedgehog 2 - Oil Ocean Zone | Missing some of the percussion, among other issues.
Batman: Return of the Joker - Gotham in Danger | The mixing and instruments can use a bit of work.

Keep the features coming! It's always fun to listen to them and discuss them as faux-intellectuals.

Pictionary - Title Screen?
New nominations
Silver Surfer - Stage 1. The mix of custom instruments and ADSR is as impressive as it could possibly be.

Undertale - Megalovania. This game isn't as fashionable as it used to be, but still, I wanted to feature this because I thought it'd been featured already.

Cyber Force - Are You Ready. This theme sounds incredibly good and it's a shame it's not very popular. However, the port has a really great instrument choice, maybe even better than the original version.

Hmmm, maybe Funky Forest?

Anyways, lets nominate another ones:

The Lawnmower Man - Main Theme by Samantha

Yep, the song from A2MT - B Side. This tune gives a feel of a VR scenario, and it uses well the Male choirs.

The Lost Vikings (Amiga) - Candyland by Sinc-X

Brimble strikes again! This is my favourite of the Lost Vikings ost because it sounds too groovy in a good way.

Spider-Man and the X-Men in Arcade's Revenge - Gambit by KKevinM

The best one that Kevin ported. This one is actually beatiful! Apart from the percussion, the trumpets, the bass and the guitars sound amazing. Also guess who composed this...

Yume Nikki - Poniko's Room by Tob

Name: Abnormal Asylum
Author: Daizo Dee Von
https://www.smwcentral.net/?p=section&a=details&id=21490
Reason: one of the greatest original compositions I've heard here. Loved the percussion and the ambiance! Dark and tense enough to fit a lot of scenarios.
Nobody takes flopping Cheep-Cheeps seriously.

Background image: Snowy Mountains by Gamma V

Xenoblade Chronicles - You Will Know Our Names

I think it's a pretty cool song, and has an awesome use of vanilla samples.
