TOOLS FOR YOSHI'S ISLAND EDITING

We don't have a clear, localized source for all the tools for YI, so... Here is a list of currently available tools for Yoshi's Island, download links, and what they can do:

Name - Link - Purpose
---------------------------------
GOLDEN EGG v0.005 - Link - LEVEL DESIGN EDITOR, primary tool to mod YI

Ycompress - Link - Decompresses the graphics for editing in YY-CHR or other graphics editors

BTD6_maker's YI Text Editor - Link - Allows editing of all text boxes

YI Entrance & Middle Ring Editors - Link - Two programs. One edits level start points, the other edits Middle Ring restart points

Better Middle Rings - Link - Patch that makes it easier to edit Middle Ring restart points, requires asar to patch. Midway entrances are edited through a data file instead of the above program

YI Sprite Set Editor - Link - Edits spritesets to use different combinations of sprites together

Yoshi's Island Level Tool - Link - Exports levels from and imports levels to ROMs
---------------------------------

Please feel free to post any others you find/create in this thread, and I will update this post as tools are posted.
There is Pastel too, a tool for edit the palettes made by Lui time ago. It is actually very usable, but has some bugs that could corrupt your rom (they were noticed by RPG Hacker) Using this is recomended if you don't want to mess with hex edits or SNESpal, but you need to be careful, and always make a backup before using.

This should be uploaded to the site imo

Nice job!

Some weeks ago I was seeing the Kipernal's Generic YI Tools thread and I found something interesting. The user tehaxor69 made a beta overworld editor that can be found in his file bin (the link itself, becuase the tool in the post's link seems to be uncompiled)

The tool very tedious to use (need to load and save both rom and YIALL.gfx separately, need to reinsert YIALL.gfx manually with ycompress, unoptimized menus and options, etc..), but it actually works:

Editor vs In-Game (did a bunch of random edits arround levels 1 and 2)

Layer 1 and Layer 2 can be easily editable, Layer 3 editor seems to be useless and Sprite Editor is usable, but it works weird due to the coordinates of the walking Yoshi's path are determined in the code of the rom (if I remember close)

Aparently, tehaxor gave the source code of the tool, so this tool could be potentially optimized.

is this the correct place to post this, right?

Pastel? It's been rejected by what RPG Hacker posted. Sadly the tool seems to be abandoned, meaning the best you can get is what Ninetales said, which is backing up your ROM.

However, with Dropbox's loss of the Public folder, we cannot access the otherwise useful YI hacking tools, and we now have to find them through other means, which are very time consuming (and painful!) to find.

Well, the old thread did, and that's where all the tools from Kipernal are, because he apparently decided not to put them in his filebin.

In fact, Kipernal made a ton of YI tools, so this loss should not be taken lightly tbh

Being really honest, Kipernal's tools are not actually a big loss (and they're not "a ton" actually, only 3). It's very known that YIPES can corrupt level data so that's basicaly a "no" (even if it is very user-friendly and stuff), and the Title Screen editor is very useless in my opinion (and the tool itself is very buggy and unoptimized) The Sprite Set Editor is the only "good" tool, but it's just because it does its job, because the tool itself is pretty buggy too.

Even then, using the Spriteset Editor tool is a pain in the ass, since it lists the spritesets and sprite graphics in decimal instead of hexidecimal.

Everything you need to know is here (ideally, move your possible questions there or in the FAQ).

How do you use the editors? I opened Golden Egg and I can't figure out how to change the map. I've tried clicking on everything.

That sounds perfect!
You can't edit the map with Golden Egg, only levels.

That's what I meant by maps, the levels. Some of the roms for this game do re-order the maps. I would like to do that too. Many of the rom hacks had custom textures and sprites; and a different Yoshi color too.

How do I edit and/or make levels with Golden Egg?

How hard is it to import and/or export levels?
First you need to open your ROM. Click File>Open ROM in the top left of the window, or hit Ctrl+Shift+O on the keyboard and select your ROM file in the window that comes up.

Next, you need to open a level. There will now be a second "file" option below the first one. Click File>Open Level in ROM... or hit Ctrl+L to open the level selection dialog. Now you can pick a level and open it in the editor.

To move objects you can select them with the mouse, and you can add new objects by dragging them onto the screen from the menu on the left. Right-clicking with something selected will make a copy of it. You can switch between editing sprites and objects by clicking the piranha plant and post icons at the top of the editor window.

You can figure out the rest of the keyboard shortcuts by poking around in Golden Egg.

Thanks, but when I click (either right or left) on anything in the map editor part of the program nothing happens. I was able to change tilesets only. I tried saving after changing the skybox as an experiment and I tested the ROM and nothing changed.

All I was able to do was load the ROM and the map.

Update: Why was the skybox so broken and screwed up? I believe it's called a glitch. The top layer literally looked like pixel poop. The "Ocean" skybox was full of lines and was the wrong color.

Update: I just found out how to move the map tiles around, but I can't figure out how to place any new tiles or sprites. Also, I tried to edit the training map, but I edited the first level instead.

I was just thinking of making a full game replacement with my favorite custom levels from the level packs. I know most I would choose.

...
Here's a download link to Kipernal's YI Title Screen Editor:

YI Title Screen Editor

I wasn't able to find it anywhere else online and I happened to still have the program downloaded onto my PC. I haven't used this tool extensively (yet), though I did see that this tool was called buggy in this thread. Hopefully it still does its job well.

EDIT: I did actually find a download link to the title screen editor on SMWC, but maybe it's still useful to have this link in the tools thread.
Is it time to add Advynia to the list? Considering it has the functionality of basically all those tools combined, but for GBA.

Perhaps split the list into SNES tools and GBA tools?
