I really do love how that last level looks visually. It gets a bit busy in places, but I love all the little details in it.

I edited the volume in post like I said in the video, so just trust us when we say the level's music was really loud. Otherwise this level's idea is pretty neat but overstays its welcome a tiny bit by having hard setups far into the level, meaning lots of retreading the same ground.
This level confused me a bit. I mean, for me, white stairs were looking pretty solid, so I was jumping on them and I died few times because of that.

One question: Why did you drop reading your judge comments? That was really interesting stuff. You could refer to your experience after playing the level and that was great. After playing Blue Dabadi level you firmly disagreed with your judge comment and that was really hilarious. I mean it just takes 30s-1min per level to read it. Is this really too much time?
I stopped reading them because I couldn't shake this feeling that reading them verbatim had been a waste of time since we were already going to talk about the level anyway, and it would just add on even more time sitting there on the overworld with nothing happening other than talking. I'd also never really gotten any feedback either positive or negative about me reading the comments, so I kind of guessed that it was something that I could remove from the videos without anyone being bothered by it.

Is it something you'd really like to see us keep doing? Admittedly I wasn't totally sure about the idea but we were itching to get recording the other night so it got left out.

Yea, the level does mention grey blocks are disabled in the Message Box, but the bright palette really didn't help with that.

Also, i agree with Galaer here, i like the part with the judge comments after you play a level. It's really interesting to see the way you commented on the level back then, and compare it with how you see it now during the playthrough.

Only now, months after the contest was over and I was editing this video, did I realize that 63rd place should have been disqualified. The reason? It didn't use the base rom! The base rom has an infinity symbol where the lives counter normally is. This entry doesn't. We never noticed in judging! Congrats on slipping through our gazes and placing 63rd I guess.
Fun fact: I actually noticed that level didn't use the base rom, and mentioned it in my fan-judge review.

I found quite weird how it wasn't disqualified when the results came out, but, since this review was one of the first i did, i thought the creator had updated the level later to use the base rom.

The level is a bit of a mess in its graphical replacements, and it's definitely a long one. I suspect it's not possible to beat in 500 seconds without foreknowledge of the level because in judging I made it to the final section with only about 20 seconds left.

It's not a great idea to make your midpoint be optional and hidden while also making a semi-difficult level of reasonable length.

Sequels to previous contest levels can be pretty neat with the right context. But overly hard and precise, autoscrolling, un-checkpointed levels are not.
The VLDC11 TASBlock part 2 is here! lol
I was waiting for this! Although i gotta say this wasn't as funny to watch as the first part of TASBlock (which was Mountan Castle). But i'd say that's mainly because this level is a lot more frustrating to play (to the point where that frustration transfers to the viewer). Many things in this level do not align correctly, it has a lot of mean traps and kaizo block/enemy spam, and it doesn't leave breaks even to put savestates.

Also, since i talked so much about the bad part, i should also say some words about the good one lol
Shrine of Souls is really such a cool level! I love the idea of using layer 2 to save the Dry Bones' souls! Overall it is really fun and plays great!

I was also gonna post a comment on the Youtube video talking about a few of the things you guys said in the video, but... when i was finishing the comment and getting ready to post, i went to another tab to check one thing on the judges scores and Youtube automatically started the next video, erasing my comment without any warning. So yea, i'll write that comment again later, but right now i'm just not feeling like it. Damn it Youtube!

Did you have auto-playing turned on? You better watch out, especially when you've made so much progress in your comment you're about to submit it. I have auto-playing turned off and I'm not concerned at all. You can turn it off from time to time if you prefer not clicking to watch an other video.
I have a Discord server as well! (by joining, you agree to the rules)

Man, I so wish the first level had just done what its second half was all about for the whole level, because I liked the second half way more than the first.
Actually, moving ledge holes work in an entirely different way, whenever Mario or a sprite is in contact with its hitbox it disables their layer 1 interaction, which is what made you clip into that muncher and die. They also don't change level tiles in any way, the black rectangle is part of its sprite graphics.

So the author of this level actually sent me a PM here after we'd recorded the video to try and explain stuff before we played so we maybe wouldn't be so hard on him. I told him we'd already recorded the video, but that I'd make mention of his message here when the video went up. I also told him that I was glad he admitted it was a learning experience and to just keep trying, and keep improving. Also that in many ways this was already a much more interesting level than my first attempts at using Lunar Magic, even if the execution wasn't great. He thanked me, and told me he's looking forward to the video regardless of the criticism within because he valued it. I chose to re-edit the video to include a message like this before the video starts, since he took the time to reach out to me. It was the least I could do since we'd already recorded.

The main part of his message to me is below, if you'd like to read it:

This was my first vldc level ever. Also I wanted to make a level where people couldn't just beat it on the first playthrough because they had to figure things out or look for clues in the environment. I really wanted to make something very different from what everyone else had been doing the past couple of vldc. This was the compromised and rushed version of the idea I had. Actually I had too many ideas and try to jam them all in. Also I forgot the hint box to explain the level, which would have really helped.

The short time limits are on purpose to put pressure on you as you go through a forest full of enemies hence the name Forest Blitz. Solid trees are the bright color also if you look at which level of the ground the trees come from it lets you know which trees are which. From the bottom row of the screen they are solid from the second row of the screen they are priority on and from the third row of the screen they are priority off. The colors of the berries are a guide on where to go and not to go and also where a special item in the beginning of the level. There are actually four ways to complete that first jump sequence that you got stuck on in the beginning, but I won't give them away just in case others in play through the level. In spots where things aren't pretty clear there are coins that leads you to the next place but in general I wanted most of the areas to have multiple paths so that the player could feel left to their own devices to figure how to complete a section in whatever way they saw fit.

Thru the forest into the bushes and dirt and back up the roots of the trees to the ground level. the last two segments have no enemies as a sign that you have made it to a safer place.
