The Jukebox - Chatting about music!

Man I used to be so Radiohead-crazy. Tbh In Rainbows sounds exactly like the album looks. I ...can't really explain it better than that. It's certainly a fun one. Pablo Honey is funny to me in an edgy teenager grungy britpop way but Blow Out was a hell of a finish and I think still is probably their strongest closer. I didn't dislike the album, but I wouldn't call it a masterpiece or even great. The instrument work was the high point throughout.

To Be A Brilliant Light was the only one that stuck with me from the On a Friday days that stayed in the On a Friday days, but to think that was from their no-name garage band days and stands pretty strong after all this time is quite impressive. I sorta regret selling some of my deluxe editions of the Radiohead stuff, particularly The Bends, Amnesiac, and Hail to the Thief. I think the song that really got me into them was You And Whose Army? Maquiladora and Cuttooth are the kings of all B-Sides. Honorary mention to Pearly and Go Slowly.

They were great in concert during their TKoL tour. I would gladly see them again if they'd come back to New England. I have not listened to their albums after that though. D: It is a sin though what they did to Identikit - the 'beta' version they played on tour was so much better than the studio one #ab{>_>}

New Everything Everything album out 👀

Halfway through, really into it so far (not paying attention to any lyrics yet, just the beat). It's always a bit scary when one of your favorite bands releases something new cause there's a risk of a quality drop, but thankfully I'm not feeling this here. Though they released two three banger sneak peak singles previousy, so I already wasn't that worried. Arch Enemy (last song I finished as of this post) is my current favorite!
It's easily the best thing I've done
So why the empty numb?
Please, does anyone know the name of this music? (Don't pay attention to the Simpsons trailer video):

Tsujigiri-Sake by Japanese Folk Metal, their newest song, I love it.
It starts out pretty aggressive, more so than their usual style, then it shifts to a electronic dance-ish style and it builds up to one of their best choruses, particularly because of the riffs in the chorus, they're so good! The song gets chaotic at moments, but it tends to return to its melodic moments not too soon after.

I like it because it keeps it from getting stale.

Also, ignore the weirdness of the video, this band tends to be very shitposty in their videos, usually consisting of imagery that reminds me of karaoke and MADs on NicoNicoDouga of all things. lol
They like to have fun and be silly, which I appreciate, I'm kinda tired of bands who only act super serious and nothing else.

Thanks to the Non-VGM Tourney, I listened to Boxcars by R.E.M for the first time.

I am now obsessed.

I think you got me wrong, because it's not the same music (except if it was another person's request, then I'm sorry).

Which is absolutely the correct reaction. #tb{:)} Early R.E.M. is great.

I grew up with R.E.M.'s major hits on the radio (Losing My Religion, Everybody Hurts, etc.) but only seriously got into them a couple of years ago, and now they're just about my favorite band. I was surprised when I find out that they go all the way back to 1980, and that their earlier stuff is so good. Their sound changed quite a bit after the 80s and I enjoy all of it, but the raw, foot-tapping energy of their first records is hard to top.

Acoustic Wizard - Venus in Furs

I love stoner folk (or whatever you call this), it's just so good whenever I'm feeling negative. It flows so well with my inner self.
This song in particular is great, there is an ethereal feel to it, the instrumental is simple but hypnotizing enough and the lyrics are so cool and sorta esoteric.

I personally love the line:
I am the zodiac, I am the stars~

It just sounds so mystical, I also love the psychedelic effect that builds up at the end.

I like this version of the song more than the original version.

No music thread would be complete without at least a mention of The Most Unwanted Song. Despite the name and backstory, it's actually fun to listen to for some reason. This bizarre 22 minute epic consists of a soprano rapping about cowboys in the desert, bagpipes, country elements, children singing about holidays and telling you to do all your shopping at Walmart, and someone shouting political jargon in a megaphone.
There's also a nightcore version and I like how the still image is of Walmart.

^ That nightcore version completed my life. I think Alvin and the Chipmunks have earned themselves a vacation for that job well done.

Thanks to Hobz, I am getting into mewithoutYou. I pulled up Ten Stories and though I haven't finished it yet, I am already getting the feeling this is going to become a favorite band halfway through Grist For the Malady Mill. Their musical style really resonates with me, sets an atmosphere, and I get a strong visual from the lyrics.

Other than that, when I need to focus hard and have nothing else to listen to, this wordless lo-fi hip-hop stream has been a good one to work to.

AFTER 14 YEARS SYSTEM OF A DOWN ARE BACK

PROTECT THE LAND / GENOCIDAL HUMANOIDZ

These two singles sound fantastic and more importantly the band reconvened to fight for a pretty serious cause. If you guys like metal and care about human rights I urge you to spare two bucks for these songs as the proceeds will go to help fight a human rights crisis in Armenia.
i finally listened to 100 gecs for the first time ever and it feels like drinking mercury

i love it

what what are all yall fav albums of 2020?? any genre. the only thing i listen to was that new fionna apple. also any of you have spotify?

Psychotic Waltz came out of nowhere with a new album, with their last album being literally from a few months before I was even born! It's some pretty good stuff. Atavistia released their second album (and finally became a full band, instead of a one-guy project). Finntroll also released an album for the first time in 7 years, so there's a bit of a thing of bands releasing stuff after a long time. Lena Katina and Japanese Folk Metal also released some stuff this year, but it wasn't much, just some singles, not a full album.

There's probably more that I just forgot, but Finntroll was definitely my favorite of the year! I think I didn't pay attention to much, honestly, I definitely missed a whole lot of stuff, as usual. If anyone has any recommendations, hit me up too! I tend to be willing to try out new stuff.

I have 5 picks: Mount Shrine's Shortwave Ruins (zoned-out drone ambient), OMNIPONY's CRUSHCORE (hyper aggressive dubstep — preventive trigger warning for video's comments, they lead to a bad story about the artist), Cell's Live in Corfu (psychill), Spring In A Small Town's self-titled album (style can't be captured into words) and Prism Age's Transmissions from Pleiades EP (lo-fi synth goodness).

Shoutouts to dgoHn (lush drumfunk — breathtaking music video) and Tigran Hamasyan (modern jazz) for releasing new albums which I've only heard one song of but on repeat cause they're fantastic, Freethinker (unrelenting acidcore) for making a surprise return to form and Jafu (jazzy, deep dubstep) and Antoine Dufour (guitar fiddling guru) for releasing new albums which I haven't sat down for yet but am massively excited for.

For what it's worth, I'm thankful of 2020 for giving me new favourite albums that all differ wildly from one another #fim{^_^}
I haven't really been specifically keeping up with new albums coming out in 2020. I mainly know of specific songs, like this one that was probably inspired by the pandemic, Level of Concern from Twenty One Pilots.

Also in late December Aly and AJ released an explicit version of Potential Breakup Song where they say "Except for the fact it was birthday, my fuckin' birthday". I like how the addition of swears is not the only difference from the original cuz the instrumental is rockier.

Captain Jack - Drill Instructor (All 4 One Mix)
Man, I love dumb 90s europop/eurodance! This one is my favorite rendition of this song honestly. also, I have no idea why Captain Jack's mascot is an anime girl that looks like a main character from an obscure PC Engine CD game from the 1994 or something, but it's pretty amusing

Since late last summer, I've been on a serious New Jack Swing kick.

There are a lot of New Jack Swing mixes on YouTube. The same no doubt goes for other platforms that allow for the sharing of mixes. Probably the best thing about this mix is that it includes the Finesse Remix by Bruno Mars and Cardi B. Despite coming out decades after all the other songs in the mix, it fits right in. We need a New Jack Swing revival.
