2020 NON-VGM TOURNEY: RESULTS

Other Contest/EventResults

Squarepusher - Papalon
Aphex Twin - Vordhosbn
Joe Hisaishi - Merry-Go-Round - This piece is like watching your fondest memories through rose-tinted glasses. A lot of whimsy and emotional punch: spring air and clean sky, chasing your friend up a big grassy hill, being young and happy... oh how I wish to be there.

Mitchie M - Tanki Nonki Danshi - One of the best Hatsune Miku songs I have heard. The composition is crazy fun. It reminds me of Michael Jackson and Sonic 3, haha.

/////////// #fim{:P} ///////////

Squarepusher - Papalon - There are so many contrasting chill and tense elements in this piece that it leaves me unsure what sensation it's trying to create, but it does create the mental imagery of a dark urban alley for me. It's a good listen for the busy mind.

Aphex Twin - Vordhosbn - Deliberately organized chaos and discomfort. It makes me feel like I'm unable to wake from a nightmare. Other than the high-pitched sawtooth leaving a buzz in my ear, it's good. It reaches peak energy early on, which is kind of strange, but it's like a ride that taunts you as if it's going to let you off gently at all.

Voyage - Beyond - Vibey and comfy. Wrong weather to really feel it. Shucks.

SOPHIE - Ponyboy - lmfao this is so lewd and demented and the bass is so strong that it doesn't even need to be modified for trolling games over voice chat. You could literally be John Torque with this song. The MLP font killed me. Still laughing.

Toots and the Maytals - Funky Kingston - I'm having trouble getting into it. I like that it is upbeat and has a good rhythm, but the voice is very hoarse, the production very raw. This recording doesn't seem to do it justice.

Wolf Alice - Don't Delete the Kisses - Really not liking the heavy echo, the lyrics themselves (pop cliche,) and the spoken parts. There's a lot of scratchy synth panned to the left that's a bit grating to listen to during the second verse. The entire song sits on a drum loop and a drawn-out, over-loud whirr, neither of which are memorable nor interesting. By far my least favorite of the contest, and maybe of all the music I've heard in the last five years.

Just look above you...
If it's something that can be stopped, then just try to stop it!
Joe Hisaishi - Merry-Go-Round of Life
Aphex Twin - Vordhosbn

Little column A little column B since I both love Warp records and Studio Ghibli. Honorary mention goes to Toots and the Maytals, I'd come back to it.
Slight bummer that R.E.M. didn't make it, but it makes me happy to see people enjoyed it regardless. #tb{:)}

Joe Hisaishi - Merry-Go-Round of Life
Mitchie M - 短気呑気男子

Aphex Twin - Vordhosbn (my nomination. while I haven't listened to much from Aphex Twin, I'd say this is probably my favorite track that I know of when it comes to them; love how the intense drums but chill sounding melody and synths somehow manage to work as well as it does haha)

Mitchie M - 短気呑気男子 (ngl, this is surprisingly pretty banger, and I love a lot of the instrumentation too, especially the TR-808 cowbell and the record scratches lmao; was going to choose the Joe Hisaishi one before this, but honestly I think I definitely enjoyed this one a lot more :V)

Joe Hisaishi - Merry-Go-Round of Life (well, he's probably one of the most famous Japanese anime/movie composers out there, and while I haven't actually watched a Studio Ghibli movie yet (yeah, I know, just fuck my shit up 😔), I can see why other people would like him; anyway, it sounds cool, and especially love the piano chords, but yeah, it wasn't enough for me to nominate despite that I guess :V)

Voyage - Beyond (this is pretty cool, and I probably would've nominated this if it wasn't for the fact that the Aphex Twin track I nominated already filled up a similar spot, but yeah, like the chill vibe of this one a lot :P)

Squarepusher - Papalon (same with Voyage - Beyond, tho I dunno if I enjoyed this one as much; dunno why, but I guess it didn't sound all that appealing for some reason :V)

Wolf Alice - Don't Delete the Kisses (yeah, I don't like this one very much honestly; just boring ass pop shit, I don't care, no one cares ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)

SOPHIE - Ponyboy (GOD why did I have to be subject to this torture, please never fucking make me listen to this again #wario{>:|})

Preliminary Round - Set I

Roy Orbison - I Drove All Night
Crumb - Locket
Parov Stelar - Catgroove
Hachioji-P × Giga - Gimme×Gimme (Feat. Miku Hatsune & Rin Kagamine)
Richard Wright - Cat Cruise
Deftones - Digital Bath
Lizardking - A Piece of Magic Mix
Röyksopp - Remind Me

Richard Wright - Cat Cruise (really into this one)
Roy Orbison - I Drove All Night (nice song)

(overall a solid set, even the songs i wasnt into seemed to be good for their genre)
Lizardking - A Piece of Magic Mix - </tourney>

Röyksopp - Remind Me - I'd always bob my head to that Geico commercial. This song is the exact kind of earworm I don't want to dig out.

///////// #ab{>:} Want to pick 4 in the worst way. /////////

Richard Wright - Cat Cruise - This is a dramatic journey told with no speech. I should check out more of his solo work.

Crumb - Locket - Okay, that still close-up on those eyes freaked me out a bit. This song is ASMR and head haze. I love the lo-fi production. Very chill song, but the video makes me dizzy so I'm not gonna watch more than I did. The chorus, well, it comes in like someone suddenly clapping an inch from your face and I almost jumped both times because I don't expect it.

Deftones - Digital Bath - Strong. This is a song I'd go to when I want to feel detached.

Roy Orbison - Drove All Night - >be me >go through life thinking this was a Celine Dion song
Well I sure got an education today. More dreamy and subdued, excellent natural vibrato in his voice and ability to sustain, and he does hit a really crazy note near the end. Has that essential 80's sound. I'd jam out to this in the car with my mother for sure.

Hachioji-P × Giga - Gimme×Gimme (ft. Hatsune Miku & Kagamine Rin) - Funky and off-beat. A very clean "modern pop"-style Vocaloid piece. While not my taste, I have to hand it to the creator for high-quality production on this one. It's also a fun song.

Just look above you...

Mega Man X3 OSTs
Parov Stelar - Catgroove
Richard Wright - Cat Cruise

Well that was a hard choice. I really enjoyed Crumb and Lizarking's songs.
Lizardking - A Piece of Magic Mix - neat
Richard Wright - Cat Cruise - pretty cool

---

Röyksopp - Remind Me - good instrumentals
Hachioji-P × Giga - Gimme×Gimme (Feat. Miku Hatsune & Rin Kagamine) - y'all finally did it, it's a miku song that i dig somehow
Crumb - Locket - uniquely nice
Roy Orbison - I Drove All Night - pretty nice
Parov Stelar - Catgroove - pros: it's electro swing. cons: it's the most generic electro swing
Deftones - Digital Bath - it's ok

---

difficult round
WOW, this is a good set. I actually had a pretty hard time ranking songs for this one.

1. Roy Orbison - I Drove All Night: Dang, this was unexpected. The only Roy Orbison song I've really listened to in full is In Dreams, which I do like, but this one's on a whole new level. One of my favorite songs in this tourney for sure.
2. Crumb - Locket: This is a really cool song, it's something that you can listen to casually or just have on in the background. Had a hard time picking between this and Catgroove, but I think this song is a lot more unique and memorable. Also, that music video is SUPER trippy.
---------------
3. Parov Stelar - Catgroove: Extremely catchy, much better than the electroswing song that was in the previous set.
4. Hachioji-P × Giga - Gimme×Gimme (Feat. Miku Hatsune & Rin Kagamine): AWESOME music, not super big on the vocals (especially at the beginning).
5. Deftones - Digital Bath: This song's decent, but it doesn't really stand out to me.
6. Lizardking - A Piece of Magic Mix: It's alright. I'd like the song more if it was a lot shorter; as it stands, it's WAAAY too long without being very engaging.
7. Richard Wright - Cat Cruise: Kinda boring.

Remind Me was my nomination blah blah
(Also thanks Counterfeit for ensuring that not all of my nominations got 0 votes without me voting on my own 🙏)

Set I really enjoyed the selection here!

1. Richard Wright - Cat Cruise
2. Röyksopp - Remind Me
What is a Lunar Magic, and can I eat it?
Roy Orbison - I Drove All Night
Deftones - Digital Bath

sure, why not
ask me if i give a f*ck...
Crumb - Locket
Richard Wright - Cat Cruise

Top Picks:
1) Röyksopp - Remind Me: alright who picked this one? Bc I never heard the full song until now. Now my life feels 15% or more complete.
2) Deftones - Digital Bath: it's just one of those days years.

Other Songs:
-Lizardking - A Piece of Magic Mix: what can I say? I love the industrial sound this song makes.
-Hachioji-P × Giga - Gimme×Gimme (Feat. Miku Hatsune & Rin Kagamine): I hate to admit, but I still love the dubstep-like bass(?) in music. (Not dubstep itself, but certain aspects of it.) First Miku song I've heard too (that wasn't a meme).
-Roy Orbison - I Drove All Night: good song to play on a road trip.
-Crumb - Locket: I actually heard this one before the tourney. Locket's a cool song, and it has a great buildup, but the lyrics doesn't make much sense most of the time. That's not a bad thing; can't stop me from relaxing to this. It' just not the type of song I'd rank on a list.
-Richard Wright - Cat Cruise: sax sweep me away.
-Parov Stelar - Catgroove: electro-swing isn't my thing, but I can respect it.

That would be me. And yeah, I'd recently seen that one Geico commercial with that song in one of those "ONLY 2000s KIDS WILL REMEMBER THIS" videos and someone in the comments said the source, so I listened to the whole thing and really liked it. I nominated it to trigger people's nostalgia : P

Roy Orbison - I Drove All Night
Clean af
Crumb - Locket
Pretty nice.

Hachioji-P × Giga - Gimme×Gimme
Interesting
Deftones - Digital Bath
More than ok
Röyksopp - Remind Me
Ok
Parov Stelar - Catgroove
Imagine Cat Cruise but with a more upbeat rhythm that was more notable
Lizardking - A Piece of Magic Mix
Liked then annoyed because the song ended around the 4 minute point and I felt done with the song by then, but nope, got to loop itself over.
Richard Wright - Cat Cruise
My mind kind of just glossed over when listening to it and it just didn't catch my attention. This isn't to say I didn't like this song, I just didn't care for it.
