Monkey Business

Standard

Hi everyone, I'm Bluey. Here's a demo of my first romhack project, which for now I'm calling Monkey Business. This is a game where you play as Diddy Kong and have to rescue DK who has been kidnapped by K. Rool (again). I hope one day when this is finished it will be considered the third best game starring Diddy. I've spent most of the quarantine this year playing platformers like DKC and Shovel Knight and I've had the itch to take a stab at it. This game is intended to be more difficult than SMW. I'm aiming for something around the difficulty of Donkey Kong Country Returns.

Demo contains 12 levels (more like drafts of levels in some cases), and I tried to make each of them unique from each other. All 12 levels are available right from the start, and they have all been marked "completed" so you can exit them any time. The first level "Rumble in da Jungle" is intended to be level 1. The other levels are not necessarily ordered how they will be in the final game, but more or less by difficulty. In general as you move up on the map the levels get more difficult.

You'll notice there's still a lot to do, like figuring out how to make a title screen and world map and such. But I'm anxious to show this off and start getting feedback before the game gets too big.

A few odd things to mention: I'm not entirely sure which palettes I should and should not be editing. It's not a big deal except for the jungle levels where my palettes mess with the hud and text boxes. The minecart level is pretty janky. #w{:>} During the cave section if you touch the D-pad you'll be off cycle for the layer 2 scrolling and you will die. But I put something there to indicate that. Yeah I know you shouldn't leave stuff like that, but there you are.

Anyway I'm having a lot of fun making this. I eventually hope this to be around 35-40 levels. I have tons and tons of ideas, like a Diddy Kong Racing level for example.

Anyway here's some screenshots:

And here's a download link for the demo. Zip contains the patch file and a credits list. If you notice that I used a patch or graphics and forgot to give credit please let me know so I can fix it.
Looks promising. I'm kind of skittish on hacks with Mine Cart Ride mechanics, but because this is a hack designed around Donkey Kong (Country) characters, I can forgive this.

I'll play the demo whenever I have free time. Which is... I don't know, lol.

STELLA!
