Mario Quits

Kaizo

Hello everyone,

In early March or so I watched a stream of Barb making GPW3 and I thought why not try making your own hack. I downloaded LM and started playing around. And I was immediately hooked. For the next 3 months I spent pretty much every free minute working on my hack, testing, learning things or searching for custom stuff that I can use.
... and here I am with some screenshots of my hack so far.

The story of my hack begins with Mario in his office...

... He is sick of his job at Peach's company and his life and decides to leave it all behind.
(I have a lot of ideas for the rest but I don't want to tell everything yet. And I am not sure which version I will use.)

Since I am not very good at Kaizo I guess my hack won't be of extreme difficulty, but it won't be easy! I have some very nice obstacles already!
My number one objective is to have fluent gameplay that just feels good once you figured out how to do a section. I am also trying to have some nice grafics in my hack. I drew some of the stuff in the screenshots myyself. I am super proud. :)
I am aiming for 10-12 exits. My levels are not short!

So... here are some screens:

This looks like a swell hack. Though it's not different from many kaizo hacks we have seen lately, at least this has a personality.

I'm not sure about the palette pattern in some levels, especially the line-guided one (the background doesn't seem fitting in comparison to the environment, I feel).

Nevertheless, looking forward for more!
Windowless ride, feeling alive
Are you alive or just breathing?
Seems like a cool idea! I like the buildings in the overworld. I wanted to suggest you to find playtesters for your hack when you're done and to join SMW Central's Discord if you haven't already.
The only thing I don't like that much is the green palette in the ghost house.
Looking forward to this #smw{:TUP:}

Thanks! This hack probably won't be groundbreaking, but I think I have some unique stuff already and some ideas in my mind.

Yeah, the palettes are not final. I like the BG which is also kind of important for my story idea... which is pretty stupid. :D I might end up making a completely different FG.

I am definitely looking for playtesters once I am near a finished hack. But I am not even halfway through. If there's someone interested, please let me know.

The ghost house was the second level/section I created. I have been looking for a nice BG since then but haven't found something I like yet. If I end up keeping the vanilla BG I might consider polishing the palette.
Thanks!
Wow, this looks really impressive for a first hack! I don't really play kaizo hacks anymore (or hacks in general) but I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this.

Thanks a lot!

I finished another level today. That means I have so far:

3 complete levels (1 of them has a secret exit)
2 sections/half levels (1 of them has a secret exit)
(+ that little intro in the office)

Now I am back to the toughest part, at least for me: getting started with a whole new level. I will probably spend several hours until I am happy with the first obstacle and waste my time playing my already finished levels. :(
I am working on a screen wrap level. The first half vertical, second half horizontal. Vertical is pretty much done! Horizontal barely started.

Wow this is pretty neat. I'm excited to see how this turns out. I think it'll be quite a great hack
Thanks for your kind words.
I am on vacation right now. I think I will share some news when I am back home.
I don't have to work for another 2 weeks and hope to make some progress in that time. I have not lately.
It's been a while since my last update, but there is lot going on in real life and I had quite some issues with patches going wrong and me not having a clue of ASM. Anyway, I have more or less two complete levels more + two started concepts + I improved a lot of the stuff I already had + added some story telling + worked on my title screen design + music. So, I am pleased with my progress so far. And I have a lot of ideas for some more stuff. I guess I am about 50% done now. In the end this will probably take a whole year of my life, which is kind of stupid, but I have a lot of fun.

i love the story, looking forward/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\

Thanks!

After quite some time I want to have a major update.
I am working on the last level I planned for this hack. But there is still so much to do:

- At least 2-3 levels need to get major changes
- I am planning to have a bunch of 1 or 2 screen levels at the end of the hack. Missing about 4-5 of those.
- Music (a lot)
- Overworld
- Story-telling

The story-telling might be too ambitious for me. I have pretty much no idea where my little story should lead to, incorporating the levels in a useful way. But let's see.

I am planning to release within 2021. But I haven't had much progress recently. I am stuck at the moment. But that's not the first time.

Anyway, her are some screenshots:

I am a little paranoid and don't want to give away too much about my set-ups (see screenshots :)) but here's a video of one of my levels to give you an idea:
Video Link

(I already realized that I missed one dash-indicator and some priority issue on the last screen of the first section, so I think it's quite useful to watch videos of your gameplay!?)

As mentioned, I am still far from completion. But if you like my progress so far, you might want to help me out and make one of the top spots of my credit list. #smrpg{y} I have some minor ASM issues and I need help with that. I also have one ASM request open right now which is kind of important for my last level. If someone would claim it, that would be super cool. I am also looking for 1-2 songs that might be exclusive for my hack, at least until release. Last but not least I am looking for one or two playtesters. Playtesting is not going to happen very soon, so I do not make an "official" request yet... If you want to help me with any of this, please contact me! I'd appreciate it!

Cheers!
I forgot to mention in this thread that I have v0.8 available for playtesting here. There are also some final screenshots in that thread.
I'd really appreciate some feedback!

Thanks!
I just finished a complete run of my almost finished hack for the first
time... with a working overworld and complete story line.

#smw{:peace:}

I can't believe it.
I have to work on a few GFX and details and I have to decide on some
music but then it is done.

I might be looking for someone to play through my game as a final test.
If you want to to do that, please let me know.
Hello everyone,

After about 2.5 years it's done. Pretty sure I am going to release Mario Quits during C3 this weekend.

amazing, congratulations! sorry again that I was of so little help with testing, but I´m sure that all your crazy effort will have paid off! Looking forward to watching people play this hack, until I might be skilled enough to beat it myself! #w{=D}
