Yup, I’m back after 3 months or so, and so is Back to the Classics.. It’s nice to see all the newb faces and the old ones too.. but yeah, I’m back for my 1000th post!!
Wait, you didn’t even know I was gone? Eh, well, I’ll keep this short: my compy crashed, I lost everything, ran off from SMWC like a drama queen [by the way, I wrote my leaving post on my iPod Touch, and I hadn’t seen they’d changed the rules to “no leaving posts” until after my post.. you see, the text is small, and I noticed in the talk section(before I saw the leave/return thread is now “Introduce Yourself”) before leaving that the Bar and Grill was named after my hack(back to the Classics), and just had to post in there. If I ever returned (I really thought I was leaving), I thought, “Hey, why not on my 1000th post?” so I posted my thanks in that thread for being named after my hack, and that I was leaving. I THEN noticed the leave/return thread was gone, and facepalmed.. eh..], found a pretty old backup, and remade progress. I’ve also been lurking a bit here while “away”, so I know of LM 7, but I’ve chosen to continue using LM 6, to keep it “2009” vanilla.
And, after almost a year on this hack, by now every single level in BttC is done! Yay! So, I’m back to FINALLY participate in a C3 before I get kicked out of the Vanilla Team Hack or ASMWCP, and to show I’m not dead.
To all the new people, my hack is called Back to the Classics(like I haven’t made it clear enough XD), and it’s completely “early 2009” vanilla. I say “early 2009” because by now people are combining tilesets and overlapping and rotating tiles and even GFX edits and the like. My hack has no such things: not even ExGFX to combine tilesets or anything! NO ExGFX at ALL (lol of course I know how, but don’t want to), I’ve used only Lunar Magic to make this hack. No YY-CHR or external crap. Anyways, despite that, my hack is still quite unique. I’m 99.99% sure I invented Map16 trickery back when I started this hack, which is basically using Map16 tiles cleverly to make things. Nowadays all vanilla hackers use it, many heavily though w/ ExGFX, while again, I use no ExGFX. You can’t exactly compare me to the elite vanilla hackers of today(I’m specifically thinking of Lynnes and Broozer, but forgive me if I forgot any, there’s a lot of good vanilla hackers today), since the term “vanilla” has evolved to mean something pretty easy to work w/, and definitely better looking, while I’m using the term as it was back a year ago(trust me, back then my stuff was amazing to people). Anyways, wall of text aside, have some screenies and videos! By the way, ignore ALL HUD stuff as of now..

Level 1 - Seacliff Stretch
I kept the original SMW FG palette in this level for the feeling it gives. Notice the vanilla BG(pretty old but eh). This level is almost a year old
The first real Map16 gimmick I made so long ago... bushes on ledges. The tiles connecting the bush to the ledges are slope tiles :>
Note I killed a lot of the enemies in these screens..
We COULD take the normal exit..
or the not-so-secret secret exit. layer 3 palette will be changed.
And the lava isn't dark because lava actually glows believe it or not.

Level 2 - Mushroom Mile(suggestions for new name plz( and remember alliteration ~ ))
Beginning of the level. Yes, the complicated mushroom stems are vanilla. In fact they don't even use Map16 tiles, it's just line guides
Remember these levels are like a year old.
btw I really like the athletic feeling the BG palette gives off in this level. also the mushroom palette is semi-outdated.
again, vanilla floating water made w/ line guides. ? blocks will be removed as the create cutoff :/

Level 3-1: Noontime Knoll
This level is actually the second I made for the hack (the 1st was 1-1, Seacliff Stretch). It reminds me of where I live in summer for some reason. And yes I invented the "peas"(grass dots) in the FG dirt, just like I invented all of my Map16 gimmicks(and Map 16 GIMMICKING in itself)

This level prolly wowed the most people, and I've improved it to make it EVEN BETTER looking!
this is what I mean by better looking. More Map16 gimmicks I invented:
pipe tiles as water, and making Map16 copies of FG using a dif. palette! The dif. palette is exactly the same but w/ +100 or so blue added. I invented that, too, and many people've used it.
Did I mention I <3 dolphins?
Again, I kept the SMW FG palette for nostalgia.
Plenty of nooks and crannies to explore in this level...
I can't wait til someone who prolly doesn't even hack yells at me for putting a Rip Van Fish on land...

WORLD 6 - night/bowser theme
Level 6-1 Burnt Badlands
Last mandatory level (besides the final castle). I know using red BGs are iffy, but I hope this grapefruit sky is okay.
This level is actually supposed to be ancient ruins of a temple worshiping the volcano.

note the volcano craters. I actually had a pretty nifty idea I never got around to involving these.. meh.
Generic stuff.
Into the volcano. Check out them Map16 trickery crystals.
Nice buzzy beetle palette and a podoboo.
Tried to give the swoopers a more natural bat look. I could improve it, when I'm less lazy.
Going for an 'old bones' look w/ the skull raft.
By the way I made most of this level on paper first. Put a decent amount of work into making the ceiling and lava slope-y.
Outside, and it's night! I'mma improve the night sky palette. Ninji erupting from the volcano crater.
Even more volcano feel w/ the volcano lotus atop a volcanic crater...
Level 6-optional: Shadow Symphony
This level's pretty old, but has some good design. It's after the volcano level, and OPTIONAL. It has an intricate secret exit aswell.

Irony: in SMW, Banzai Bills/Rexes appeared FIRST AND ONLY in the VERY FIRST optional level.
In my hack, Banzai Bills/Rexes appear FIRST AND ONLY in the VERY LAST optional level(unless you include this level's secret level, or the final castle).

-First of my priorities, ASMWCP and Vanilla Team Hack commitments :/
-Go through and polish levels a bit(aka color HUD to its world theme, remove all Yoshi Coins(since I’v decided they’re cliché), remove bad stuff, add vanilla HDMA, etc.)
-Submaps
-Editing the Boss Battles
-Betatesting(don’t request I’m not ready and have some good hacker and former supporters I have in mind anyways..)
-hm, that’s it I think.. unless I think of something else..
