Bonus Games

I'm going to propose a new system of bonuses throughout the hack.

First, the goal tape is modified to give out twice the stars it normally does, and getting directly at the top gives you a 1up, not a 3up. Getting 100 bonus stars doesn't send you to a bonus game, but rather just gives you another 1up.

Secondly, there should be bonus games of similar type to each other scattered throughout the hack. Every third level or so would have a well-hidden warp to a bonus game, in which the player would scramble to collect coins, defeat enemies, race through a course, or something of the kind. These bonuses could also contain SMWC in-jokes, which would confine them to a single optional area as opposed to throughout the hack, as caused a bit of grief for the SMWCP.

It's an interesting idea overall. I assume the "bonus" areas would be similar to the ones in DKCR, where you'd have a similar objective in each one (collect all of the items). I also like the idea of tucking away in-jokes there.

I foresee it as being sort of difficult, since everyone who signs up for a level would need to be in on this idea. While it's a good idea in theory, I already know some people will refuse to consider it and just go about their own ways.

I wouldn't call my remarks "disparaging", but being that we do have that SMWC-coin collectible system in the hack already, that should lead to plenty of exploration. That, and last I heard, some people wanted to work towards a custom goal routine.

I see where you're coming from, but that's the concept behind only having it once per few levels. That way, we only need one per few people to like the idea.

Hm...that would be good. I support this idea; it could make for some interesting and fun possibilities. Once every few levels somehow doesn't seem like enough, though...I mean, DKC1-3 had around two per level. I guess we don't want to overdo it, though.

I think that's an interesting idea (whether for this hack or for another hack).

(One problem though with obtaining 100 stars at the same time-- it will display as "o0" during the goal scene. So there would either need to be an ASM tweak to fix that, or use 99 instead. (Also, you'd need to make the hex-edit to speed up the bonus star addition so it doesn't cut off at 62 stars.))

Actually, if you're going to give the player a 1up every 100 bonus stars, how about removing the bonus star counter entirely (or using it for a different purpose), and instead having bonus stars add directly to your coin counter? (That would only work if you keep 100 coins = 1up, though...)

I'd personally much rather keep the original bonus stars and only have a new bonus game, kinda like in SMWCP1. That is only if lifes are kept in this game after all.

Heh heh heh. Actually, I had been planning to come up with a level 0 concept today anyways. I'll prolly make it for powerups rather than lives though.
If we should go with the SMB3-inventory-system (or basically any other inventory system) we could make it a little treasure chest game, where you have lots of treasure chests and can open up to 3 of them (or whatever) and get powerups added to your inventory.
