Instruments are killing me

I just started ported and learned everything necessary to make a good port, but I can't find good instruments for the song. There's any easy wat to discover good instruments for a song, or you have to keep trying until you find good ones?
Sorry if this is a newbie question.
Music porting is mostly trial and error.

SMW instruments aren't very good but you can tweak them with ADSR and echo effects to make them sound a lot better.

Unless you want to get into sampling already, I'd recommend trial and error with the default instruments. Everyone starts off somewhere, it just requires a little perseverance. :)
I think a post layout goes here somewhere...
Also it's good to reference the original midi that you're porting from.

You may notice that each instrument command is refered to as a real instrument (ie @0 is generally refered to as a flute and @1 is generally refered to as a violin). It's a good foot off the ground if you try and match these up as best you can to the midi. So say for example, if the melody part of the midi used a piano, it'd probably be best to make the melody part of the port use @9 (the SMW piano).

It was sorta difficult to word that but I hope you get it.
SMWC's official dentist since 2011.
