State of SMW ROMhacking?

Hi, all. I've been away for quite a bit and I just wanted to ask for the general state of things.

I guess, more specifically, has creating customized player characters become any easier in the last year or so?

How malleable is SMW now?

Is it conceivable to take SMW and modify it to the point that one could say create a Megaman or Castlevania style game?

Have any new RPG elements become readily available?

Thanks in advance!

With the advancements that have been made in both tools and ASM SMW is pretty much more like a base engine now if you compare it to other game making software so super malleable.

Creating customized characters if you mean with custom powerups or special attacks/abilities it's probably just as much work as it used to be however the understanding of how to make things work right has gotten better so if you're good with ASM you could probably have an easier time.
There are patching and other ASM however that allow for custom powerups so if you want to just graphic swap stuff you have that option too.

Yes you could make a Megaman or Castlevania type system if you wanted to.

I'm not sure how much RPG sytle stuff has been added but I know in the past couple weeks I've seen progress being made on a quest type system but idk if it'll be a public submission.
I made this. It's a top down view Super Mario World hack.

Nice!

I have a basic understanding of ASM, though more familiar with 6502 than 65816.
Good to know either way! Thanks!

@DPBOX : Cool stuff! Can that be combined with vanilla side-view? If so that could be the basis for a Zelda II or Gargoyle's Quest style game.

Yes. And you mentioning Zelda 2 gave me a good idea.
