It's been a while, though I finally managed to finish up another Super Mario world romhack. These days I play a lot of Minecraft and do a ton of speedrunning, but I never truly lost interest in level design, among other aspects of SMW hacking. To anyone familiar with my history of hard and long levels, I tried to make something more reasonable in terms of difficulty than older hacks such as Colossus and early revisions of Bits and Pieces.

As a side note, this place sure looks different from how it looked 2 years ago. Maybe now I could get away with having a rep for making hard levels.

This looks really good judging from the screenshots, i will definitely give it a try sometime.
Finished Hacks

In progress

I recently played through Bits and Pieces and it became one of my favorite hacks I've played, so I'll have to give this a try (especially since it's supposed to not be as hard as some of your other hacks).
Good to have you back, LevelEngine!

As I've seen in your comeback stream, these screenshots show some promising levels. I'm tempted to play them given what I see and have seen.

I played quite a bit of this and I'm really loving it. Levels are pretty well-paced and reasonably challenging. As a player who would often get burned out by the intense difficulty of some of your other creations, I find this very refreshing.
The aesthetics, level design, and mechanics are pretty incredible all around and I only have a few minor complaints:
  • I really appreciate the way you demonstrate the paths that the snake blocks in this level take. However, I was a little miffed that this upwards path, which seemed like a secret, ended up getting me squished and killed.
  • I thought the on/off switches and their interactions with sprites were excellent except for one part. I had the switch set to this position so I could keep the Thwomp in the hole. Further up the road I found a wall that I needed to toggle the switch for, and when I turned back to do so, I found that the Thwomp respawned and was blocking my path.
  • This part requires the player to have a P-switch already active. I had no way of knowing this, as I took the top path to get the 1-up, and found myself completely trapped with no way to eliminate the block and run up the wall.
  • I really don't like the nigh-invisible ghosts. They're perfectly visible with the P-switch active but I don't think that that in any way makes up for all the cheap shots they would get at me.

Yeah, my list of complaints is pretty small. I'm fifteen exits in and having a really good time so far.
Judging the screenshots this looks pretty good. Definitely have to give this a try, once i have more freetime. #smw{:TUP:}

Glad to see you never got away from hacking and gift us this sweet hack. Besides this, I hope you're having fun with Minecraft and Speedrunning. #tb{:]} Sounds quite time consuming so it would be understandabe if there doesn't come much from you.

There are so many hacks these days with stunning visuals.
It really shows how much effort you put into things which how nice everything looks.

That Underwater Level in particular looks really good.
I'll have to put this on my list of hacks to play.

Good Stuff. #smrpg{y}
just got through this hack. i gotta say, this is one heck of a return to smw hacking! (level spoilers ahead, please don't read if you haven't played the hack!)

okay so, pretty much every level had a really nice atmosphere to it.
volencia mansion
is a good example of this.
the music and visuals just made it feel so spooky and surreal!

and then there's the gimmicks. i didn't even think some of these were a thing. in another level,
you needed the p switch on constantly for all the boos and eeries to be visible. that's...honestly a really creative use of palette exanimation with the p switch trigger.
i also enjoyed the
red switch level where jumping is disabled. lotta good setups in that one where i had to use my noggin.

the only levels that got me buttmad were the
forest/jungle
ones, mainly because of
the fireballs that made me feel like i was playing touhou
lmao. the
p balloon
sections are nearly frame-perfect too

overall this hack is really worth playing! give it a shot, y'all
Welcome back, levelengine. I have first heard about you from that HLDC 2014 level.
