Since the patch that lets you have separate graphics for Mario and Luigi on the overworld contained several bugs and was ultimately rejected last year, I figured I would set up a test rom and go into the code and see if I could get Luigi to be on SP3 instead of SP1. I kinda got it to work by changing value 20955 ($04:8755) from 02 to 03 as shown here:

I say "kinda" because upon completing a level and switching to player 2, this happens:

The graphics get swapped for some strange reason. Is there any way to prevent this?

I still can't seem to get it working so I'd guess the value I changed isn't the proper one, does anyone know what value determines what palette Luigi on the Overworld uses?

Okay so I found the byte value apparently, 20BDE ($04:86CA), but no matter what I set it to, it either glitches the player graphics or the player graphics still get swapped. I'm wanting the player 2 map sprite to remain on SP3 even when its on player 2's turn.
