No extra care is overkill, man. People are dying.

I heard the situation in my state's health services is way worse than what is being passed on to the media.
State of emergency declared in Portugal. Now everyone gets to stay home.

My company has all staff working from home, if they can. Only the few warehouse staff are still at work... Except us van driving field technicians, we're given alcohol gel and latex gloves.

Very much a Boris Johnson or Lord Farquaad attitude. "Some of you may die, but it is a business expenditure we deem necessary." Essentially.

But then what else can we do? We can't work from home, but we do IT for retail, and shops have to keep running and taking card payments to supply people and reduce the spread.

People may feel annoyed that shelves are being panic emptied when we have plenty to go around anyway, imagine how peeved they'd be if the shops shut and you only got what rations you were given.
Yesterday the President of Mexico stated he had protective amulets against coronavirus. One of those charms is a literal two US dollar bill. Yes, you read that right, Mexico strategy against the pandemic is divine protection.

118 confirmed cases; one woman died at age 41. At this point quarantine should be considered, but instead, the president denies any need for measures and lets the virus spread like it's nothing.

Take a good read at this if you want to know more, and if you speak Spanish, you can even hear it for yourself.

Trump defended calling COVID-19 the "Chinese virus"

I know this isn't as important in the grander scheme of the COVID outbreak but I'm utterly embarrassed to live in a country run by an absolute buffoon. We're all stressed out enough as it is, we don't need to add racism and xenophobia to the pile of stressors.

Just a friendly reminder that Bernie and his staff is suspending the campaign in favor of focusing on collecting funds for charities regarding the virus.
If that's not president material, I don't know what is. He's already proving to be a better man than Biden and the entirety of the current Democratic party.

I was among the "lucky" ones yesterday. When we were in the supermarket to pick up food, an employee just so happened to roll in a new palette of toilet paper. Of course all those toilet paper zombies immediately jumped out of their hiding places and picked up two or three packages. We only picked up one, because we didn't want to contribute to the problem. It's frankly ridiculous.

Anyways, the biggest issue I currently have with Corona is actually something you might not expect. It's back problems. At work, I have a height-adjustable desk, so I can actually switch between sitting and standing multiple time throughout the day, which is great for my back. At home, I don't have such a desk (they're ridiculously expensive), so I can only work while sitting, which really, really does a bad job on my back. It's barely been a week now and I already feel like my spine was breaking apart.

I really hope that this will be over soon, but I'm very pessimistic at the moment and expect this to take over a year...

Someone in Tulsa got the virus and apparently recovered. It still has people on edge though. My church has suspended all functions and worship services, which pretty much keeps me at home since church was how I got out. TFCon Orlando was canceled, but I doubt that's the only nerd gathering to be shut down by this thing. I've never seen a disease shut down society this much in my life, and I'm 36 years old.

Italy surprassed China in number of deaths by coronavirus.
This must be the fact that Italy have more elders than youngers.
New York and California declared lockdowns for 2 weeks yesterday, and today Illinois declared the same thing. I think it's only a matter of time before we see all 50 US states do the same thing. I'm going to go over our supplies situation with my mother later on, and take inventory of all the food we have. I'm not super worried, since I think we can stretch things if push comes to shove, but I want to be certain about it because there's 4 of us in the house, meaning we need food for us all. We're not really concerned about toilet paper, soap, etc. right now.

In the meantime, the Philippines now has the total of 307 cases, 13 of them are mostly recovered.

If you're living inside the Philippines, stay safe to all you guys!!

Some stats about the coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), for reference:
- The fatality rate for the virus is around 4% currently.
- In Italy, which has 47K cases, the rate is 9%.
- In Iran, which has 19K cases, the rate is 7%.
- Most other countries are still behind the curve.
- The infamous 1918 Influenza (popularly called the Spanish flu), had a rate from 2% to 10% (estimates vary).
- The original coronavirus (SARSr-CoV) which hit China in 2002/2003 had a rate of around 9.5%.

This virus can get really bad without proper treatment. That's why the lockdowns, social distancing and stuff is important. If our hospitals can take care of all the severe cases, they can drastically reduce the amount of deaths, and then we'll be back to normal just like usual. If they can't (due to not having enough resources for everyone, not enough hospital beds, ventilators or professionals available), then we're back to the 1918 Influenza all over again.

Lots of people in my family, including my mother, brother and sister, have respiratory problems. If they get the coronavirus, they WILL have to go to the hospital immediately. And I don't want to know what will happen to them if there's no room left over for them.

I know I already said this, but please, stay safe everyone. If not for you or for your family or friends, then for others as well. Don't be like a certain group of people in a certain subreddit who refuse to acknowledge the severity of this virus.

Honestly this just seems like yet another case of when a new virus appears and the media goes crazy about it making it seem like it will end humanity as we know it and everyone fears their lives and talks about it, then two weeks later nobody even remembers the virus's name. This one has killed less than 100 people out of the 3000~ that have caught it, that's a death ratio of around 3%, no larger than a regular cold.

Remember ebola? ah1n1? yeah me neither.

Yeah, last time i remember people freaking out about a Coronavirus was when their child got a cold.
*EDIT: And yep, you mentioned the cold too.
search "Coronavirus" on Wikipedia (add nothing else) and yep......
COVID-19, is a member of the family of viruses that cause the COMMON COLD.
So yeah, you should worry about it, but not as much as you guys are freaking out about it now.

Most people here are being reasonable about it. It's much more contagious than we thought and spreads easily, just because its similar to SARS, cold viruses and gives flu like symptoms does not mean we should dismiss it as such. The death rates have already surpassed that of influenza and the elderly people are the most vulnerable here. Italy already lost 800 people in the last day alone and their cases continue to rise dramatically. The thing is we don't know much about COVID-19 yet like we do with influenza. The media I agree is blowing this way out of proportion and causing unnecessary panic among the populations but others such as politicians are downplaying the severity of it. We need to be alert but not panicking to that degree. Politicians delaying treatment and public notices are agitating the problem and these nationwide/statewide shutdowns are the result of doing too little too late.

US/California update: As of 21 March, we have 27,000 confirmed cases in the US. My home state California has been put on a stay at home order issued by the Governor. San Diego, Los Angeles and the bay area (the largest population centers) have all basically come to a standstill. My hometown, gyms, hobby shops, clothing stores, bars, restaurants have all closed their doors with some offering very limited services such as restaurants offering only takeout. Governor also said for everyone to not leave home unless absolutely essential (not sure if it's legally binding or not, need to look over the policy). Me and the roommates are doing our part staying cooped up in our apartment dying of boredom lol.
I feel like media down here is trying its best to not make the population panic by sugarcoating the news a bit, but a negative consequence of that is way too many people are still not giving the situation enough credit. I also am not so satisfied about the strength of the federal government on its acts so far. States are being called out for restricting public and private transportation services, for example. I think every care we take is little right now.

Commerce and all non-essential activities shut down as of today in my state by decree of the government. I'm quite happy about it, as we seem to be ahead of several other states that haven't done this yet, while we still have less than 10 confirmed cases of infection.

Brazil as a whole on the other hand is on its way to the one thousand cases. We're only expected to hit peak by mid-April, and only start to have a considerable reduction by June until September when things might be fine again. That's certainly a lot of time until we hit stability, and many deaths and suffering are expected to come. #ab{:(} It's not gonna be so easy to stay bright.

Germany also started to do that since a couple days ago. While the order isn't country wide, it is state and city wide (albeit mostly a stop at night). All because people don't care...

It's still interesting is that officially, there still are less than 100 death cases in Germany (according to John Hopkins University which counts more cases than RKI) and many other countries have surpassed it (even those which have less people). Mind you than Germany has got the 5th most cases world wide (about as many as Spain and a bit less than the US).
Either we're really good at it or the conspiracy theorists have right, lol. At the same time, according to that data, we don't have as many recoveries as other countries.

In all fairness, that post was made before COVID-19 exploded and got out of hand.

I don't think anyone here is freaking out about this, minus maybe a couple. I think most people here are handling it as they should be. At least, from what I've read the past couple of pages anyways.

Level up your Arash. Trust me, you will thank me later.

I actually don't know what to do anymore. Here a whopping total of 3 (!) people were sent home suspected of having the symptoms (one passed to the other), and we're trying to keep our sanity given the timetable we must fulfill. And speaking of public transportation services, buses here adopted the Sunday timetable until 8PM from this week onwards, which... sucks. #ab{x_x} I think the media is making the population panic more than they already are, which isn't helping. I just hope we at least hit stability or something at some point.
