I'm not sure if this is the ideal place to discuss this, but this is about the SMW custom musics.
I'm talking about that there are more SMW custom musics than SMW custom graphics, and it'll increasing faster. I'm saying this because Dippy, KevinM, Ultima, Teows and Samantha are likely the ones that did it.
More and more people are picking up porting over time, it's inevitable. I've seen #music on Discord being rather active, usually asking for help or advice, sometimes just general discussion. This is a good development honestly, the more people working with music, the better.
Porting could be a nice segue into digital composition or chiptune composing, too.
I'd like to see an increase in blocks, sprites, UberASM, choco hacks and maybe patches personally. Just seeing more people having the confidence to do their best and tackle ASM. I'm seeing some newbie ASMers with potential on #asm, always asking questions and seeking advice on their projects, but time will tell if they'll stay on SMWC and stick with ASM.
Assembly and high-level programming (Python, Java, C# etc) also go well together and concepts of one can be transferred to the other with ease if you understand the logic behind it.
I'd like to see some aspiring pixel artists working on graphics too. Both on their hacks and just in general.
I think it is because more people are looking for fun things to do with SMW hacking. Many people might find graphics boring and ASM too complex, as such porting their favorite songs to SMW appears to be the next best thing.?
I'm not entirely sure.
It would certainly seem Music is busier than what I remember. I can remember a time where Graphics had more submissions than Music, but it seems it's not that way anymore!
After picking up porting/composing recently myself, I can say first hand it is pretty accessible if you put your mind to it. Admittedly, I've got a fair bit of back knowledge on music theory, and I have mon amie bebn legg who answers all my questions. However, it's good to see music is on the up!
I'm glad to see the music section in good hands now. It was pretty busy when I left but now it seems there's a lot more people interested in it which is always nice. Lot of fresh faces on the music staff team which is also nice.
I was never the most productive content maker, but I always found music to be the greatest source of inspiration to make stuff, and I'm super glad to see the section grow so so much lately. The general quality of ports has increased as well. Pretty wild that those two things are happening simultaneously.
I'm glad to see that there's more music coming into the music section. Honestly, when more songs are getting ported, it gives many more options for which music you can have in your hack. And for me, currently planning out a hack, it's great to have so many options.
Like Koopster stated, I find working with custom music to be inspirational especially when you finally get that port you've been working on to sound just right. Whether or not you create it from scratch or port from a MIDI I find it satisfying working with music in SMW.
I'm a beginner in music myself and eventually I at the very least want to be able to write a decently sounding song without too much outside help. Like currently, I am working on creating a song for a hack I plan on creating, does it sound like it's ported from 2007 so far? You bet it does. But I'm ready to improve on it, polish it and make it sound at least pretty decent.
That being said the journey to become a better custom music composer is a fun, rewarding experience and I'm glad to see more people doing it and can see why they enjoy it. This could definitely explain the increase of more music being created and am excited to see what other songs are to come out in the future!
Music is probably one of the most important pieces to a level in a SMW hack. If you have bad or unfitting music playing for the level, it can sour the entire level. So it's great that there are so many quality options you can choose from, including just making your own ports if they don't exist just yet.
I have a little bit of MML knowledge so maybe I might transition into porting music for SMW one of these days. The thing is, porting takes time, and I'm not sure how much of that I generally have on a daily basis.
Level up your Arash. Trust me, you will thank me later.
Lacking any real talent to make music myself, I am both happy and appreciative to see the boom in custom tunes. It's made it possible to hunt through lots of viable options when you're looking to match (and define) a level's mood.
