Welcome to the Cinema & TV Studio! This thread is for discussing film, television shows, and anime in a general manner. It used to exist in the old Media subforum, but I figure it's a thread worth keeping around even through the subforum's closure.

Use this thread to talk about what you've been watching, or what will be airing soon. If you wish to discuss spoilers for something you're watching, please use either Spoiler or Collapse tags to do so. You're also still allowed to make threads for topics outside this thread, but use common sense when doing so. For example, extended discussion or active weekly watching of a currently airing show would be a good reason to make a new thread in GD instead of posting in here.

A new feature of the thread this time is that I'd like to let people recommended stuff to watch, and then keep a small list in this post. If you want to Recommend a tv show, movie, or anime, you definitely have to talk about it like above, and then explain why you think more people should watch it and why it should be listed as a recommendation. Please provide an IMDB or MyAnimeList link to the show or movie in question. If something is recommended, I'll provide a link to that site's summary, as well as a link to your post in which you recommended it so people can read why that show/film is one to watch.

Do not link to sites where you can watch pirated copies of things for free! Your link will be removed and you will be temporarily banned for 3 days if you do.

To get the thread started, I've been watching Star Trek: The Next Generation for the first time. I started doing so because Star Trek: Picard came out, which I'm very interested in watching. However, I feel like I truly need to sit and watch enough TNG to have reference points for things Picard may bring up. Plus, I tried watching some of TNG years ago and liked it a lot, so I'm happy to get back into the show for real this time.

Season 1 seems pretty goofy so far, and I've heard as much from a friend of mine, but I'm still enjoying the character interactions, and there's some really interesting moments in exploring the idea of humanity in space even this early in the series. It's really interesting to go back and watch the show, especially when it's a show that was running in its prime right around the time I was born. If I'm enjoying the "less-good" stuff in Season 1, then I can't wait to get to the really good stuff later on.
I'm currently re-watching Transformers Prime since it has recently been added to Tubi, which is a free and LEGAL streaming service that you can even get on a Roku box.

Prime is probably one of the best Transformers shows ever made, and it's part of my personal Holy Trinity of Transformers shows, along with Animated and Beast Wars. It's one of the more mature takes on the franchise, and it does a much better job of aiming for an older audience than the Michael Bay movies. The cast is small for a show designed to sell toys, but that allows each character to be better fleshed out and memorable. It also has one of the best human casts in a Transformers show.

For the past two years or so I've been watching a showed called The Flash, based on the DC Comics superhero of the same name. It features a wide variety of characters from the DC universe and also has a bunch of shows next to it (Arrow, Supergirl, Batwoman, etc) all sharing the same universe, similar to Marvel's Cinematic Universe.

What makes me like this show is the attention given to time travel and the multiverse, which I think is really interesting and also to some extent think could be possible for us years from now, probably not any time soon for all of us currently alive to witness, though.

I definitely do recommend giving it a watch if you're into that kind of stuff and if you like fictional superhero shows, as well.
For US residents, the show airs every Tuesday or Wednesday on the CW, or you can watch it a few days after it airs on Netflix across the globe.
I finally finished the last episode of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic the other day. I'm not sure what will be next, but probably She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. Or I could finish Darkwing Duck, or watch Steven Universe...I think there was at least one other animated show that I was looking at, but I'm not sure.

Maybe you should watch Transformers Prime just to see the other show that made the Hub so awesome when it was still the Hub. BTW, which She-Ra were you planning to watch? I understand there was a recent reboot, but the original is an 80s cartoon. I never watched either, but I'm still curious.

Got into Murder She Wrote due to being sick and watching TV the past December and early January. Really fun show with a fun crew. The show's kinda formulaic and a bit predictable at times tho

I'm watching the new one. I'm currently 15 episodes in. Kind of wonder if I should be watching the old one, though; I've heard that the new one can get pretty dark.
slowly working my way through Hidamari Sketch in between all the stuff going on in life. great show, very nice to relax to. I've been on a Shaft binge for the past couple of months (Monogatari -> Zetsubou -> Madoka). it's nice seeing all the different styles of anime they can come out with. I feel like they really use the digital medium to its fullest.
It's been a long while since I've watched My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic (stopped halfway season 6), have been nagging myself to get back into watching the rest for a while now but it hasn't worked yet :P loved the series to bits, should really continue at some point. Especially since the new Pony Life series that's been announced sounds terrible imo, not looking forward to it.

I'm totally not huge on anime, but recently I gave a few movies a shot after re-watching an old favourite, The Wind Rises (what a gorgeous movie, gosh). A friend recommended me a bunch, so I've watched Your Name, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and Mirai; loved all of them to bits. There was also a Dutch ad on YouTube that advertised an anime, Weathering With You, which I've been told is a sort-of sequel to Your Name, which would be screened in some cinemas here, and I'm considering to go, if I can afford it. I'm not likely to try any anime series, except Aggretsuko which I still have to watch the 2nd season of, and I might one day revisit Hoshi No Kaabii, but otherwise nah :P

Started watching Attack on Titan the other day. It's not bad by any means, but it certainly is in no way "the greatest thing ever" that some people call it. Dub is really good too.

It's hard to find good TV shows made in Mexico, but this one is actually really good, so I'm going to recommend it here. La casa de las Flores (House of Flowers) is a comedy about a rich Mexican family struggling to maintain a public image of perfection while facing a lot of inner problems. The show gives insight about a lot of problems of the Mexican society. It also features a decent cast of positive LGBT characters.
parasite fucked me up. it definitely deserved all the praise it had gotten.

makes me really wanna scope some of his other work - i've heard a lot about memories of murder in particular.

Welp, just blazed through the entirety of Madoka Magica (including Rebellion) these past few days, and ngl, I wasn't expecting to enjoy it this much lmao; the mere fact that it was good enough for me to just binge watch everything in only a few days should be good enough proof of that (I barely, if ever, do that when it comes to anime lol), but damn, that was a fucking ride and I loved every single second of it #wario{:peace:}

was pretty hard to wrap my head around a lot of the shit happening tho, especially after watching Rebellion (didn't hate the ending as much as others did btw), but it was still good; soundtrack is pretty amazing as well, which was a pleasant surprise since I hate anime music most of the time, and I'm legit thinking of porting the (main/original series) ED just for the heck of it haha

Surprised to hear that, since all of your pictures are anime girls.
That's definitely a misconception of mine, but I just thought all anime fans just listened to anime music all day basically. lol

Anyway, Madoka is good and the music is also fucking godly, I also didn't expect to be into it when I first heard of so many people talking about it back when it was kinda new, and I only got into it proper in like 2014 or so, definitely quite late.
But I've enjoyed it, I actually just read the manga adaptations and other manga works, as opposed to watching it like most people did.
(That's a thing I do quite frequently, since I just enjoy reading manga, honestly, although the habit has died after I started to run out of space to put manga).

Tbh, I just mainly hate how a lot of the music in anime (mainly OPs/EDs in this case) are, like, so generic and same-y, and not in a good way most of the time; that, along with the fact that the rest of the music are more just there to drive a lot of the scenes in an anime, just makes me resent a lot of it lol

There are some exceptions tho, and in fact, while Madoka's opening theme has a lot of the musical tropes and cliches one would expect a anime OP song to have, a lot of them are more about the things I like about this type of music, so I liked it a lot more than a lot of other OPs of it's type; but of course, I just like the ED better since I just tend to love a lot of music that sounds exactly like it haha

I actually mainly watch the anime of whatever series I want to watch first, and if it managed to hold my interest for long enough, I just go ahead and read the manga to continue with the story; I've done this with quite a few anime (MHA for example), and I found it to be a pretty good way to get ahead of a lot of people, especially with the case of ongoing anime haha

I get that, I'm not a big fan of stuff like that too.
Generally, the stuff I'm into is just cult classic animation or kinda old stuff, so thankfully, most of my favorites don't fall into this.
But, I'm just biased towards certain types of music.

Anyway, some OSTs I really like (beyond the OP or ED) are Madlax (same composer as Madoka), Trigun, Hellsing (the first series), Utena, Jigoku Shoujo, Higurashi, Umineko, Rozen Maiden and Blood+.

While there are probably way more stuff I really like if I think enough about it, these are just some I really like because they just sound pretty good on their own. I have no idea what you would be into, but there's probably something in one of these that will please you, as there's a lot of variety. Although a lot of it has a lot of violins, piano, electric and acoustic guitar, choirs or atmospheric vibes. My particular tastes are at fault here. lol

Yeah, I can get that.
I like Madoka's opening, despite being on the more poppy side of things, it still avoids certain aspects I don't generally like.
But my feelings are pretty inconsistent, I feel.
I definitely like some PreCure openings, despite them having a lot of more "poppiness" than what I usually like. Although that aside, there are some pretty cool songs on some PreCure seasons, with certain songs feeling like they came out of a tokusatsu series, or a fighting game.
I'd put PreCure on my favorites I mentioned above, but I feel like it's more about specific songs generally, as opposed to the whole OST like the above examples.

I was always the kind of person to read manga because I could just go on a store that had them cheap and when or used (in a good or decent condition) and just kinda pick whatever I felt like I could like or just felt like checking out. Some manga I like don't have animated adaptations or anything like that. But then again, I just enjoy that because reading at my own pace is pretty good and relaxing and I like appreciating all the little details with something physical on my hands. And I just find it easier to get into a reading mood than a watching mood (I'm generally more prone to watching stuff with someone else).

Of course, there are stuff I like that have anime adaptations or were even anime first, but I still generally start out with manga.
I'm generally not into long series, and even if I was, I'd never make an effort to really keep up to date, because it just feels too time consuming (and tiring) to me.
It's one of the reasons I dislike shonen (well, that and a large majority of it being really generic or fight oriented for my tastes, and having certain tropes I don't like), too many of them are ridiculously lengthy, when I was a kid, I was fine with anything.
But nowadays, I'm way more picky. Both with length and with content.

well if you like variety in your opening music, definitely check out Bakemonogatari. 5 different OPs, all pretty distinct musically for an anime that's only 12 episodes long.
I always watch telenovelas, looking a horror short film by Wondering Pictures in Canada.

I have Instagram: @fermin_el_cuh, and Snapchat: @mispastelitos56.
Started losing interest in Attack on Titan despite only having to watch a few more episodes to be done with season one. I moved on to something I've been wanting to watch for a while, the original 1974 Getter Robo anime. It's a bit jarring going from 2013 animation to something significantly older, lol
