24hoSMW #12
Four for the four times threeth fast frenzy for the funny forbidden day
Hello hello hello hello, fellow observers of the Gregorian calendar! Welcome to the 12th ever 24hoSMW, a contest where you harness your "I made my KLDC level 12 minutes before the deadline" energy and use it as the Actual gimmick for a contest! I'll be your host this time around and I'm very excited to let the contest unfold. So without further ado, let's jump right in!
The Theme
As you may or may not know, each 24hoSMW comes with a very particular theme, with things that may be more extravagant or bizarre than regular contests. This time,
As leap years come once every 4 years, the theme for this 24hoSMW is to make a level that somehow incorporates the number 4. For example, you could make a level using only 4 different sprites, use only 4 different colours for the whole level, use sprites that embody the number 4, and so on; the possibilities are limitless! Try to think outside the box and see what you can come up with.
You may use any resource you like to make your level. Custom blocks, sprites, graphics, music, UberASM, etc. are all on the table. But 24 hours isn't a lot, so use your time wisely!
Scoring
Levels will be scored on the following criteria:
Design: 20 pts.
How is the level designed? Is it fun to play? Does it feel coherent and accomplishes what it sets out to do?
Creativity: 20 pts.
How well does it fit the "4" theme? Does the level bring something novel or interesting to the table?
Aesthetics: 10 pts.
How does the level look? Do the music, palettes, and tilesets all work together? Is there cutoff?
Giving us a nice, round total of 50 points.
Please note that submitting a level that is completely irrelevant to the theme could potentially result in a harsh penalty being applied. More on this below.
Keeping with the theme, we will have 4 judges score the levels. Their identities will not be revealed until after the contest, in order to prevent designing levels specifically for the judges.
Rules
You must:
-Submit your entry as a .bps patch. Submitting .smc, .sfc, .ips, or any other format will result in an instant disqualification (and in the case of the first two, a warning and/or ban.)
-Integrate the "4" theme into your level somehow. Levels that do not adhere to the theme at all (or just barely do; for example, having a level that has no relation to the theme other than a group of 4 coins at the beginning), could receive a harsh penalty depending on the irrelevance.
-Include a .txt file with your submission indicating how your level incorporates the "4" theme. We ask this of participants because some of you may wish to incorporate the theme in ways that may not be immediately noticeable.
You can:
-Use any custom resources you like (graphics, music, sprites, blocks, etc.), both pre-existing or made specifically for this contest. There are no limitations to what you can add to the level, but keep in mind you only have 24 hours!
-Make levels as long as you want. There are no timer restrictions in this contest. There are no restrictions on the number of exits in a level either.
You cannot:
-Work with a partner. Each entry must be made by one individual.
-Make a level in the Kaizo range of difficulties.
-Submit a level that has been made prior to the start time of the contest. Each entry must be made specifically for this iteration of 24hoSMW.
Prizes
Our three entrants with the highest scores will receive a lovely trophy denoting their rank, as well as:
(from SMWC's list of game codes)
Everybody else will also earn a participation trophy, recoloured from the pre-existing 24hoSMW trophies to match the 72hoSPC participation trophy.
You can see them here:
Submission
Submit your levels right here in this thread! If you want to update your submission, simply edit your post. Off-topic and double posts will be deleted without notice. If you want to discuss the contest, use the discussion thread instead.
Submissions will be accepted for the next 24 hours! That's until tomorrow, March 1st 2020, at 9:00 PST, 12:00 EST, 17:00 GMT, 18:00 CET, and so on. Here's a handy timer to show how much time's left.
Best of luck to everyone, and most importantly, have fun! ♥
