72hoSPC #6 ~ Modulating Pitches - RESULTS ARE OUT!

Someone must have said "72hoSPC" three times in the mirror, because 72hoSPC #6 appeared behind me and demanded I run it! As usual, if you don't know, 72hoSPC is a contest where you have 72 hours to port or compose a song with a twist challenge.

Porting for SMW has continuously evolved over the past 12+ years. Before, all we could do was throw in vanilla instruments with default ADSR only and call it a ported song. Since then, new developments and techniques have come that allowed us to push the envelope when it comes to what we can do with these original samples. This challenge is dedicated to just that.

The Challenge:

Your challenge is to port or compose a song, unsampled, utilizing Pitch Modulation ($FA $00 $xx). The effect must be audible for at least ten seconds.

Submission Rules:
  1. Your submission must comply within the parameters of the challenge.
  2. Your submissions must work with the latest version of AddmusicK. #default / #optimized are not required (though it's not recommended to leave them out, as the challenge is unsampled), nor are global songs, SFX or optimization; if it inserts, it's eligible.
  3. Send your submission to my PM box in a .zip, .rar or .7z archive. Your submission must contain your MML file and the generated SPC. Updates are accepted as well - if you have to make an update, send me a new PM.
  4. Automatic porting programs, such as SPC to MML, are banned. However, converting with programs such as PetiteMM or it2amk is allowed.
  5. Do NOT reveal your submission in any capacity to other people until voting has ended and the results have been posted. Those who are caught doing so will be immediately disqualified.
  6. All entries should be created specifically for this contest. Don't just throw pitch modulation in an unreleased port of yours and call it a weekend!

Breaking any rules will lead to warning and/or disqualification.

Tips:
  1. The Custom Instrument thread currently has five entries in the pitch modulation instruments section. You're free to utilize them!
  2. If you don't know how to utilize pitch modulation, now's a good time to learn! You can learn about how to use it in the readme, but for a simpler explanation, think about it like this: The bits are set just like the echo command. Visualize it in the SPC player, a channel with the pitch modulation effect will utilize sound from the channel to its left (#1 will use from #0, #2 will take from #1, etc.) - this also means that if pitchmod is enabled on #0, nothing will happen.
  3. If you still don't know how to properly utilize the effect, then experiment with it! One of the easiest ways to experiment with pitch modulation is to mix and match various samples across two channels. Below are three lines you can use to experiment with:
    Code
    #amk 2
    #0 t30 v0 @0 $ED $7F $E0 (1)[l16 eerercergrrr<grrr]
    #1 @13 $ED $7F $E0 $FA $00 $02 (1)

Deadline:

You have until Monday, March 16th at 6:30 PM EST (10:30 UTC) to submit your entry. After this time, no updates will be accepted. After the deadline passes, all the entries will be compiled and posted here. Voting will be open for 96 hours following it (from Monday to Friday, at 7 PM EST) Post in this thread for any questions you have for the contest, or you can DM me on Discord at Hazel🦊#9494 if you need to reach me in a timely manner.

Prizes:
How could we forget Prizes? Not only will you get the spiffy new(ish) 72hoSPC trophy for participating, but top three will get their own trophies and our top winner will get the ever illustrious prize, the time-tested classic

Good luck, and have fun!

Yeah, sorry, I think I'll pass on this one; I'm on a bit of a slump atm, and I'm kind of taking a break from porting rn

Still might stick around for judging tho, and to listen to some of that Good Shit™️ while I'm at it haha

Question. Nothing about the rules, guidelines, or deadline or anything, but have you picked out your judges for this contest, or will you judge solo? I'm just curious since the OP doesn't say anything about it.

Level up your Arash. Trust me, you will thank me later.

Well, the norm for judging nowadays is more of a open-vote kind of thing, A.K.A anyone which isn't participating in the contest can vote; dunno if that's what you're reffering specifically, but just in case you are, that's mostly why it isn't reffered anywhere since it's been like that for a while now :P

this, pretty much. it's public voting, which means anyone who isn't participating will vote on each entry from best to worst.
Ah, okay. This is my first foray into an event like this, so I'm not quite sure how the contest works.

While I won't participate (since I'd rather get my knowledge on how to port first, and i'd rather learn while not on a 3 day limit), I will partiipate in voting. Thanks!

It might be a bad sign for my future as a porter that i didn't even figure what this post meant by pitch modulation until completing a two hour quest of googling and experimenting.

Anyways can't wait to see the submissions.

Just to be sure I've understood :
How the effect can last 10 seconds or more when all the parameters it takes are channel numbers? I guess once this $FA$00$xx line is written, the modulation stays with the targeted channels the whole duration of the song, right? If not, how to disable it at a given time? I don't see this in the doc. OK, maybe I get it, in fact The modulation can also happen on a little time frame, as an event, in a channel that's planned for exactly that. Like surprise modulation. I'm curious how this comes out in professionally crafted tracks.

I guess I'll try this challenge anyways and score a low-tier rank haha.

more or less, yeah. when it's enabled, it'll be in effect until you use another $FA $00 $xx that changes the parameters (in this case, which channels are enabled).
OK then. I'll shoot my lil proof of concept before the close of the contest. Bet it will be a super one :p

Thanks for the opportunity.

Alright! Now that the submission period is over, it's time to get to the (second) main event: voting! Below are the 16 SPCs submitted to this contest. As per tradition, these submissions are completely anonymous. You can listen to all the SPCs below:

72ho6_staircase_whip
Alpha
cosmicangel
Dive
gourmetrace
kyushu
mm2gb_title
oboro
Operation 2
PokeFlute v2
Pyramid
remix_9
Route 113
Splash Hill Zone 1
studiopolis1
test29

Or, you can download all the SPCs in a single .zip here!

Vote for your favorite SPCs, listing them from best to worst. The highest-ranked song will receive 16 points, the following one 15, then 14, until the lowest-ranked song, which will receive 1 point. If you wish, you may add comments to your votes.

When voting, be sure to account for only the quality of the port. Vote based on the quality of the port only; don't vote over things like the filename, how it fits into SMW, or who you think did the song or anything of the sort. Just focus on the quality. Voting will stay open until the 20th, at 7 PM. Participants cannot vote.

Good luck! I hope your song wins!
