I'd only heard of this came by name when it was compared to Touhou, but I'd never checked out the OST. This is probably the best song from the game, alongside its stage 2 theme (which essentially gets the same treatment that Act 2 of Launch Base/Ice Cap/Flying Battery get). It has the crispy FM synthesis charm, despite a lot of the samples actually being sampled loops (notably the drum and piano). And finally, it's just that neat kind of emotional. I have a half-baked SMW port of this song, but getting that piano to sound right unsampled is a nightmare.

Nope, this isn't the composter! I have a certain love for the Satellaview, and I wish it'd get more recognition in modern Nintendo stuff (hell, Satebo and Parabo should be in Smash). This song is from the hub of the Satellaview. When I was going through the OST, I heard this song with its flagrant @17 and @9 usage and knew that I had to pick it to trip people up! That aside, the OST for it is a nice example of the sort-of-crappy SMW instruments being used really well, and blended with some higher-quality samples, which is sort of simultaneously novel and nostalgic.

I had no clue this game existed until I played it via Nintendo Switch Online with a friend. It's surprisingly fun and satisfying to play, and pretty intricate for a NES game. However, when I heard the shop theme in-game, I knew that it was one of my favourites, which is why I picked it. This song popped into my head last summer, and I couldn’t figure out where it was from, until I went through my entire Japanese port folder and found a port of this song. I find that the range of SMW instruments there (notably @1, @13, and @4) actually give this song so much more charm than the compressed MIDI instruments of the GBA.

Holy crap, does the Style Savvy series have an amazing OST. All the songs are so happy and positive, and it’s just one of those feel-good OSTs. Nobody actually knows how this song ends... or how it even really sounds like. In fact, the version in the VGM contest is a recreation of it by ShinkoNet Cavy (which you can find here), since the original song only plays partway through in one video of the Shuusou Gyoku prototype with a ton of sound effects over it. The video only came out last year; before that, this song was an enigma whose name appeared in some prototype screenshot. Even if it's not complete, at least we now get to appreciate some of it. Though those SFX are quite loud... (If you guessed Touhou, you're not far off, since ZUN composed the music for this game.)

The "stage 2" theme from this obscure PC-98-style Touhou music album which features a whole group of Japanese Touhou-style composers. In a sense, this was supposed to be a gimme. The bassline, the FM synthesis, and everything sound incredibly Touhou, which is supposed to lure everyone into a false sense of security so that it doesn't cross their mind that this is an impostor. It's a really neat album overall though, and there's a lot of fast-paced songs, which I really love, of course helped by the fact that it's FM synthesis.

Nothing to do with high-quality rips, don't worry. This is the theme created for Sasha Sashiromiya, a fanmade Touhou character that pops up in fan games from time to time. This theme in particular plays in the incredibly obscure fangame Crystallized Mythology. It's only 3 stages long and not particularly difficult, so it's fun to just play through it when you're bored, but not feeling committed to the full, 6-stage Touhou experience. It doesn't sound particularly Touhou-like until the trumpets kick in though.

I had to pick the most extreme extreme song I could possibly think of. This goes beyond the realm of normal video game music. I don’t know how many people had Leapsters as a kid, but holy hell they are nostalgic and also there is like zero information about their games anywhere ever. I legitimately bought a Leapster off Ebay for the sole purpose of including an essentially impossible to guess song in the contest. And yes, I recorded the audio on my phone.

This one was obvious, but even then i was really worried about it. And it's not because of how obvious it is, but rather because this song has appeared in 2 different games: The Legend of Zelda, and now Super Mario Maker 2, with the Link Power-up.
I searched these 2 and compared them, and i was unable to find even the tiniest difference between them. They seem to be identical. Because of that, i was unsure which game would be picked as the correct guess.
I still wonder if someone guessing "Super Mario Maker 2" would be considered correct.


The first thought that came to my mind was Cat Mario, but the beggining sounded different. Then i remembered another place i heard this song, a flash rhythm game called "DJ Maniax", and upon checking that game, this song is labelled as "Cheetahmen Glitch Mix" there, and so i discovered the actual game this song comes from.


This one was basically free for me. Not only have i played Ardy Lightfoot quite a lot in my childhood, but i've also used a port of this exact song in the cave world of my OWDC 2019 entry. This was really one i could not get wrong.


This was also pretty free for me, as i've played Super Bomberman 5 a lot! And all other Super Bomberman games, really, these were a big part of my childhood, and i still play them a lot. Enough that i can easily recognize basically any song from these games.
I'm actually surprised i was the only one to guess this song, considering Super Bomberman is a pretty big name on SNES games. I don't know if SB5 is just not that popular, or if most people just miss seeing this song (since it's easy to skip the stages where this one plays).
Still, i'm proud of being the only guesser for this! =D

Yea, after i was done with my 4 initial guesses, i went through the songs another time, to see if i could make anything out of them. That is when i noticed this song, and how it literally says the name of the game in the lyrics xD
And upon searching about this game, i found in the soundtrack it was the correct guess!


Oh boy, the sneaky traps! When i heard this one, i knew it wouldn't be as obvious as it seemed. Luckily for me, upon searching on Youtube for something like "Super Mario all starman music", i came across a 35 minutes video which included this song.


This was a wild ride!
I was certain i've heard this song before, and was sure it was in a SMW hack. So i tried looking in some of the hacks i had played recently, but had no luck. Then i thought to myself "well, if this song was in a SMW hack, then it probably is in the Music Section on SMWC", and that is what i did, i searched in the Music Section lol.
Since i didn't know how old was the hack where i heard this song, i went through the Music Section in reverse order. It took me around 13 pages before i was able to find the unsampled port of this song, from 2012.
On a completely unrelated note, a few days after the deadline, i was browsing Youtube and stumbled upon a video of Mario Must Die 2, which is the hack i had seen use this song.

I knew it sounded familiar, and, just like Megalomania, i was sure i heard this in a SMW hack before.
I was already going through the music section for Megalomania, so i just kept going. It took me another ~10 pages to find this one.
However, the song i was looking for was not the original, so i went searching around for Mute City remixes, i searched for literally every one i could find in F-Zero games, as well as Super Smash Bros games, and none of them sounded like what i was looking for.
So i just decided to go with F-Zero series, even though i knew it would be wrong.
Still don't know which hack i played that had this song.


This was my series guess.
As soon as i heard this song, i knew it sounded really familiar. I wouldn't be able to pinpoint the actual game, since i only played Sonic the Hedgehog like, once in my life. But, as with the previous songs, i was sure i heard this one in a SMW hack.
Since i was already in a tour through the Music Section, i just kept going. But after a while, i decided to check for the soundtracks, and luckily enough, i was able to find Marble Zone in the Sonic Soundtrack pretty quickly.
Still, this wasn't the actual song i was looking for, so i went around searching for Marble Zone remixes. Just like Gloomy, i searched for every version of Marble Zone i could find in Youtube and Google, but no luck. I then did a quick search for the games in the Sonic the Hedgehog game series, which is when i saw how many they were and just gave up on this one xD
Also, post-results fun fact: Sonic Tetris doesn't even show up as a game in the Sonic series, so good thing i dropped this one!
Also still don't know which hack i played that had this song.


Alright, this one got me angry lol
I spent so long trying to find this one!
The bongos at the beggining were clearly a hint to Yoshi's Theme in Super Mario Kart, so this was one i was determined to find.
I searched through all the Mario Kart games, went through the Yoshi game series on Google and checked all Yoshi games that were released after SMW2: Yoshi's Island (Since the soundfont clearly wasn't Super Nintendo) and even went through the Smash Bros games!
And what made it worse is, one of the Yoshi games (don't remember which one right now) had a song that started with bongos, and it sounded pretty similar to this one.
But in the end (obviously) i wasn't able to find it, and just went with Yoshi series.


Oh man, Alcahest. Last time i played this game was like, at least 6 years ago, so i wasn't able to pinpoint where i had heard this song.
It certainly felt familiar to me, and the style sounded like something you'd hear in a Kirby game, so that's where i tried to search. I went through the Kirby games, from oldest to newest, up to Kirby Super Star Ultra, but then stopped, and just went with Kirby series instead.
