Chocolate Level Design Contest 2020 - Discussion

OLD - Level Design

Don't you believe that introducing a rule like this is not unfair to competitors? Because a rule must be respected as such and it is not up to the judge to decide whether to take it subjectively or not.

And if that is a suggestion, then there should be no penalty.
By the way, the event warned this as a major rule, ins't look as a suggestion at all. You need to be more communicative next time to avoid this kind of confusion.

How do judges know if a level is too big? For an event like the CLDC, don't they believe it can limit the smwhacker's creativity? It's a matter of time or a subjective question, like "this level is too boring"?

I knew you guys had high standards, but that's too much.
Good luck to anyone who participates.

I should have something witty to put here (even if it's just to update dated info), shouldn't I?

You'll have better luck if you ask Idol about this directly.

You (and Sariel, in their post) make some interesting points, but I disagree. To be honest, I feel as though some people are overthinking it just a tiny bit. Idol said it pretty succinctly in her initial reply to Sariel; "just be reasonable".

The whole point of the rule in the first place was to prevent the submissions of levels that take a ridiculous amount of time to play. As long as the level isn't unreasonably long (in a blind playthrough) then I can't see anyone complaining. I'm sure the five-minute thing was more of a recommendation than an exact requirement.

On the other hand, I do agree that the time limit itself should have been defined in SMW seconds rather than real-world minutes. Then at least the in-game timer would be a decent gauge for the length of the level, rather than forcing the judges and level designers pay attention to their clocks as they play.

yeah man just submit your level, we have plenty of time to complain about the judging after it's done lol
It's easily the best thing I've done
So why the empty numb?

I would be inclined to agreeing with your post, but my concern is the fact that there is a penalty of 5% in the score for a level that is considered "too long".
If the rule was merely a suggestion, then there wouldn't be such a penalty in place for it. And the rule explicitly states 5 minutes as a time for the perfect run, but there wasn't any other form of clarification as to how the rule, and the penalty itself, would be handled.

the 5 minute penalty rule was intended to be an alternate way to penalize extra long levels that didn't rely on the vldc timer rules, which i felt were unfair to puzzle levels. that being said, i do understand the trouble with enforcing this rule, so i'm ultimately going to waive the penalty entirely.

i'd like to come up with a nice way to force people to not submit super long levels, but i do suppose this wasn't quite the way.
I have started somewhat of a fan judging, focusing mainly on the comments and based on the contest guidelines for judging. I will try to keep it updated here (so far I have 2 entries scored and commented). Note to judges: I haven't included the creator's names, but since I won't be judging my own level, it's best that you stay away from it since my level's anonymity would be compromised.
When the judges judge the levels, are they going to give a rank and feedback on why they ranked it that or just give a rank?

Pretty much every level design contest this site has ever had included specific feedback from the judges, so I don't see why that wouldn't be the case here. After all, the designers can't improve on their skills if they don't receive feedback.

Just a note to fan judges, but please do not download my entry from the submissions thread; I have submitted a timerless version of the level to idol. If a mod could edit that post for me, that would be much appreciated.

The real link to the entry is here, btw. (The entry is renamed, so judges can't guess whose it is.)

Edit: It's now safe to download from the submission page. sincx updated the link for me.

That contest is PACKED. There is an incredible number of amazing levels. I'm kinda shocked to be honest.
I think if you make a top 10 of this contest this is a top 10 of my favorite SMW levels. People are insane, what they can do and think of is mind blowing. I wish I was this good.

Yeah I wish it too. I'm just barely good at basic level design and graphic manipulation. Just keep practicing and review often your masters mentors role models' works until you get it.

I've been in this community for more than a decade now, and never took the actual time to learn how to design "code" stuff on my own... Oh and there where the huge hiatus I've taken, sometimes for entire years. And now I am becoming medium-good at music porting since last October. And I have just done my baby steps with asm tutorials... I don't know I am headed to then, but the more you are educated, the more you have ideas what to as deep mods.
Cheers :)
Doesn't everyone want to be so good?

I need to insert custom blocks and sprites sometime and I'll see if I can design an enjoyable level around them.
I have a Discord server as well! (by joining, you agree to the rules)

Basically, I believe in peace and bashing two bricks together.

After seeing and then playing the level BEE, I don't see how I could get a single point away from it.
Not going to mention the creator to be sure no mod gets spoiled, but damned that's an amazing level.
Graphics are super pretty and neat, mechanic is super cool, the level design is very good, the music is great, and there are details that just make it even better, like the change of music when underwater, or the wave effect underwater.

I'm a bit difficult sometimes when it comes to liking levels, but that's a 100/100 for me.

I wanted to be good but my tired ass said "nah man," and this is the reality I'm living in today.

When will the results be and how many judges are there?

List Soundtrack - List Hacks

Mega Man X3 OSTs
The results will be out when the results are out, however long the judges need. Asking won't make it happen any quicker and contests take a while to judge.

The judges are listed in the rules/submission thread.

Depends on how much time the judges spend on judging. They shouldn't last longer than a couple months (around 3).

Thanks for taking the time to fan judge. It is greatly appreciated and has been a fun and informative read so far especially for someone who is trying to get better at level designs. I wish more people would do this.

Thank you for your words. I haven't advanced much the last days, sadly, since I'm pretty busy, but hopefully I will be able to recap in a couple weeks.
