What genres of hacks you think that should exist?

uhm, heya, I made this thread for you discuss what genres you think that should exist at SMW Hacking (lol, it's the title), but well have fun.

btw Metroidvania is the one that I think that should exist.

O.O
Yeah, I'd LOVE to play a Metroidvania hack, but I don't think there are any.

Actually there is one, it's Il Maniero Spectralle.
Just some Ys fan lol
All genres should be allowed to exist in a SMW hack. Few however, can be able to fundamentally change the genre of play from a platformer into something else when it comes to SMW hacking bc of two things -
1. Ambitious to do
2. Comments asking hack authors why they haven't moved on to higher-level languages to code their own games to monetize.
Modern Redrawn Mario Bros. 1.5 (last update - February 14, 2023, some new bonus frames, tons of minor touchups to various poses)

On Pixel Art Requests: Depends on what it is and if I have the time for it. If its complex and I don't have the time, don't expect me to accept it.

Projects I support:

Damn I hate it when theres comments
Very very very shortly, this drab, workaday world and everything in it will be changed forever! Follow us into the golden country, into the empire of the senseless!
I personally feel eager to see any type of experimentation with SMW.
I don't think that it's necessary for everything to be there, but I'd love to try out (and support) any hack that just tries to do something unique or unusual.

To list some, I'd love to make (some are just vague descriptions of my projects on hiatus):

-A SMW hack with focus on atmosphere, it's something I find cool and could be interesting. There's so much you can do with SMW, but I find that the key parts would be how you deal with music and the visuals, along with level presentation and design. It would be a bit hard, as you have to be a lot more thoughtful of everything in conjunction, as opposed to just making a cool level that looks nice and has fitting music.

-I want to see more puzzle style hacks. A lot of them already exist, but again, it just would be really cool.

-Some more combat/boss-centric hacks. I know SMW bosses tend to be janky, but some fairly recent stuff I've seen have cool stuff, and I believe it can be done well, as long as the boss and the player are on even terms and it doesn't overstay its welcome.

-A hack where challenge doesn't come from the usual set pieces like enemies and platforming and/or even dying (like Wario Land 2 and 3), I have no idea how that would work, but it could be cool.

-A exploration-based hack, where you're incentivized to go to different levels more than once and achieve new goals.

-A hack where the world map starts out a bit non-linearly, allowing for multiple choices, before each choice lead into a different route (allowing for a difficulty curve), then finally, all paths meet for a climactic final world.

-A hack that uses the Switch Palaces in more dynamic ways, dealing with difficulty and whatnot. There are a lot of cool creative ideas that could be done and there's no way I could list them all.

That's all I can think of right now, it's all really basic and not too fleshed out, but I just have these interests and they're pretty broad, not too specific. I think it all could be cool.
Also, keep in mind that a lot of these don't have to be separated, in fact, a lot of them would benefit from also being combined, especially the more vague and broad ones.

It's noticeable I'd like to see (and/or eventually do it myself) hacks with a more interconnectivity between the levels, or making levels that can be approached in different ways. More than just making a secret exit, but trying to legitimately bring out something more unusual to SMW. And that's with my limited mindset, I'm sure people who know coding better and whatnot could make some pretty crazy stuff and think way more outside the box than I possibly can.

Sorry for the late reply, but based on a few videos I've seen recently, I think it'd be neat to see some of the following genres represented in Super Mario World ROM hack form:

1. Super Mario 64 style collectathon. I know Super Mario Bros X has this for some episodes, and games like Super Mario 63 exist too, but it'd be neat to see someone implement the setup into Super Mario World too. Have a hub area like Peach's Castle/Defino Plaza/The Comet Observatory, then have the levels accessible from entrances there, with multiple objectives in each one.

Could even use the cursor sprite and some blocks/level ASM to set up a star/shine select screen for the levels too, which send you to different versions based on which mission you select.

2. Agreed with Metroidvania. There's a lot of potential for one of those with Super Mario World mechanics, and it'd be a fun ASM challenge too.

3. I'd also like to see a detective/mystery themed hack as well. SimpleFlips have a whole competition with this theme for Super Mario 64 hacks, and some of the creators there did surprisingly well at doing things like implementing Ace Attorney esque court scenes and murder mystery/Clue style setups in Super Mario 64's engine.

4. A board game type hack would be an interesting idea too. Limit the player to moving based on dice block rolls, and have Mario Party events play based on where they land, and you could make some really unique levels.

To a lesser degree, the Big Board from Wario Land 4 could be a model for a 2D platformer board game setup too.

5. Also, how about some hacks that use the overworld map as part of the gameplay loop? At the moment it's kind of static in most Mario games and mods, but I think you could build something super interesting by taking inspiration for the map in Smash Bros Ultimate's World of Light mode, where things like switches, partners and puzzles existed on the world map as well.

There's a lot of potential there. We really just need a nice consistent overworld sprite editor to make use of it.

Finally, it'd also be kinda cool to see something that really makes use of the old 'RPG player patch' setup, complete with puzzles and a tweaked combat system. Lunar Magic recently added the option to make levels in all kinds of layouts too, so I definitely think a Zelda esque experience could be doable with enough effort.

As for Mario's Nightmare Quest? Well, it's currently on Fusion Gameworks, ROM Hacking.net or the GCN at the moment.
cheat-master30, I'm actually thinking about making a few of those in this hack. I'll be making a Metroidvania and a few Zelda-style top down view games.

If you're interested in that hack and my other projects, feel free to join my Discord server.

If I was to ever attempt a second hack, it would be this kind of game. You'd have to approach level design from a very different perspective. As a player, I most enjoy levels that give me a reason to take my time and explore them.

As far as Metroidvania hacks, Æther is absolutely going in that direction.

Both of these are actually ideas I've had on the brain for a while! Especially the first one (I guess like Ondore's Lies too :P). Would be interesting to see some explorative levels in 2D, and it would be difficult to pull off... But I'm sure the result would be amazing.

The board game idea: would take probably a lot of ASM shenanigans for sure, but it's possible for sure to turn SMW into a board game. Maybe the board could be Dinosaur Land :O Who knows, maybe I'll pull it off for a C3 oneday idk
