Description: The green Koopa from New Super Mario Bros.

To use these graphics, you have to change the sprite's tilemap using STEAR (changes shown in the last screenshot).

I recommend you to use this patch for the sprite (you also have to enable the turning animation in it).


First off, my apologies for the wait. There have been back and forths between the graphics team as to whether this koopa graphic is really... usable or not. But I've been informed that an entry in the current chocolate contest may be using it, and I can't in good faith reject this for lack of usability if it's actually being used.

I can, however, reject it for rip quality.

There are several telltale signs that suggest these graphics were thrown into SnesGFX or another color reduction tool and not sufficiently touched up. The shells in particular are nearly one solid color and don't contain any of the texture that the originals do. The koopa head shown in the image has a stray transparent pixel in the mouth that is very noticeable in the sample level and should have been noticed very quickly in testing.

One more thing that should be touched on is similar colors in the palette. Since this is a rip that uses the whole palette row and you ideally want this to be as faithful as possible, you want to get as much out of the palette as you can by combining colors that are very similar. Colors 4 and F are nearly the same green and could be combined with no loss. You could also combine colors 7 and 9, sacrificing a slight bit of shading on the head and hands to get an additional color for shading in a section that needs it more.

The quality of this rip needs to be improved before we can accept it into the section.
