BRR Sample Section Guidelines & Changelog

Link Thread Closed
Current BRR Samples Guidelines:

BRR Submission Rules
(Updated 06/22/2020 ~ added a new rule regarding proper volume.)
  1. Your submission must consist of a zip file containing:
    • all relevant BRR files;
    • a !patterns.txt file, for use with BRR Player (see the included instructions for more info) with proper tuning and ADSR; make sure this is located in the same folder as the samples. (example file);
    • optionally, an SPC that showcases each sample.

    Note that if you're submitting a Collection, you can include any extra info in a readme, such as the source of the samples, the individual sample sizes, etc. Avoid including unnecessary or unrelated files within the .zip file.

  2. Your samples must be of reasonably good quality, and appropriately optimized.
    Avoid submitting samples that sound muffled in the context in which they are used, that click or have snaps, and/or have an insert size that is too big relative to their waveform/complexity. Keep in mind that certain samples, such as drum loops or vocal samples, may be of a relatively lower quality (to a reasonable extent) to compensate for their otherwise large size. When in doubt, feel free to include variations of a sample with different qualities, in order to let the end-user pick what suits them. Once again, this should be within reason.

  3. Your BRR files should have an appropriate volume.
    Ideally, your samples should fall around the -6dB to 0dB range. Normalize the sample if you need to. Be sure to not go over 0dB, though, or your sample will clip!

  4. Your BRR files must be named after the instrument they represent.
    If there are multiple instances of the same instrument, you may differentiate them using numbers.

  5. Your instruments must be tuned correctly.
    Melodic instruments should be tuned to a C note at any octave between 3 and 5. Percussion samples must include a note and octave that they're intended to play at.

Submission Form Guidelines
  • When submitting, fill out all applicable fields in the submission form.
    Follow the instructions underneath each following category:

    • Name
      When possible, include the source of your samples in the Name field, if they have one. For example, if your sample is ripped from a soundfont, include the soundfont name in the submission name. Compilations with many different sources are not required to include sources in their name.

    • Collection
      If you're submitting one sample, label this as Single. If you're submitting multiple samples at once, label this as Compilation.

    • Tagging
      Do not forget to label your submission with tags only from the tag list below. If you're including at least one instrument from any group, tag with the name of the group. You may tag from instruments in the group as well, to further distinguish your sample(s). Additionally, you may add tags for instruments that are not on the list.

[2015-05-18]
  • Original guidelines posted.
BRR guidelines have gotten a major update!

Removed the Size and Type fields, the biggest change to the section. While they could provide useful information, most people can glean this information just from the submission just from looking at the submission information or downloading it, and have only provided confusion as to what they mean.

Updated rules format to be consistent with the SMW Music section.
!patterns.txt is now required in place of a tuning .txt file. SPC showcase files are optional, still. While it was somewhat required in the past, its been reworded to finally be official.

Added rule 2. Samples should be appropriately optimized wherever
possible, proportionate to their complexity. For example, drum loops are generally long samples, while a flute shouldn't take up an extremely large size. This is a generally difficult guideline to enforce, and will be mostly considered on a case-by-case basis indicative to the sample(s) being submitted.

Added rule 4, requiring proper tuning. This was previously an unspoken rule in the past, generally assumed to be a standard, but much like !patterns.txt, this is now officially in place.

Added form filling guidelines akin to the SMW Music section.

Tagging is now handled by applying the group tags. If you choose, you can use specific instruments from within the group tag.
