I don’t understand how the online and offline feature really works

I know how to know if users are online, but not that much.

While SMWC can detect direct log offs, it cannot detect when users close the browser

Also, what if you are reading a page for 5 minutes? Why is the user detected as “offline?” What if they are really online?

I don’t really understand,

A website can't detect exactly when your visit starts and ends. The only way a website knows you're online is when you tell your browser to load something new from it.

Every time you click on a new page, SMW Central sees that you're requesting a page, and it sees the request came from you, so it marks you as online.

if you do nothing for 5 minutes, the site just guesses that you're offline, because it can't tell for sure. It can't tell if you've left the site, or if you're still looking at the site and just haven't loaded anything new. 5 minutes is an arbitrary limit, but it works well enough.

Oh I get it

Bit of javascript to ping the user could help with that, no?
Yeah, but it would be pretty invasive as far as web standards go and even then it wouldn't really tell if you're "online" as much as "have a tab open." Typically sites that ping the user to see if they're still around open up dialogue boxes and auto-close if there isn't a response since they're usually secure websites like banks, we really don't need that here.
