there's one thing I've never understood on that website. There is a huge bunch of data stored in the tables, but still we only get poor research and filter options.
I'll take the SMW Music table, but they're all pretty much the same.
I don't know, maybe it is my personal tantrum because I've know how to excel for years, and discovering mysql and linked tables last year felt like an epiphany, but I really don't get why we don't get god-like sorting powers and why no one else complains about it. Relevant examples of things impossible to do in current state of affairs:
- Most downloaded (sort) items between date 1 and date 2 (filter)
- Show items sorted by author
- Show items sorted by author then n# of downloads
- Show items sorted by author then date of moderation
- Show items with all their tags (on hover or something).
- Show items sorted by moderator's username.
- Show items sorted by duration then insertion size
- Show items sorted by insert size then duration
Yet another question about tags, which I don't understood so well,
there are lists of tags in every section, certain times I see I must use these tags (and no other), certain times I see I can use these tags... It's a bit mixed up imo. For example in the music section I only use tags from the list and not personal ones.
I've done a tiny bit of mysql and PHP and I'm definitely not an accomplished programmer;
I have learnt that one cannot add and remove fields from tables without fearing huge consequences;
but when we talk about table display, filter and sorting options, I haven't acknowledged of any possible complications.
At least, offering the option to download a .csv or .xls file for data analyis purposes would definitely do it... (given the data made available this way would only contain text and eventually urls, no sensitive info, only the technical stuff that's stored for each entry). Because even if those .csv do not provide dynamically linked tables, there's still a powerful treatment that can be done is Microsoft Excel.
