Mario GFX layout

Hi! I'm new to SMW hacking. I have been learning pixel art lately (examples below) and I'm interested in replacing the Mario GFX. I wanted to know what I was getting into and quite how much I'd need to draw to get an even partially usable sprite. (Okay it's a lot I probably need to set my sights a little lower.) I couldn't find any particular documentation on how all the Mario sprites are arranged, other than that they're mostly in gfx32.bin and gfx00.bin. I got a bit sidetracked into taking notes on this and started assembling some diagrams. I thought maybe they'll be useful to others? I'm still working on diagrams for the remaining GFX - the cape, p-balloon, running-up-walls and the miscellaneous ending animations.

Anyway, before I get a lot further down this rabbit hole, I was wondering how others go about creating and editing complicated sets of sprite graphics? I imagine it would be pretty frustrating to work with them in this layout, with the pieces scattered everywhere, so do people write scripts to rearrange them into, e.g. Aseprite files? I figure that would probably be how I'd go about it but I figured I might be able to save some work if I saw how others do it. Any advice is appreciated!

Best regards,

Annette.

I personally use 102's Character Creation Kit Since it comes with a nice layout to see all the frames plus explains a few oddities and usually refer to this image along with this one for editing the actual bin files. However there's also this patch which allows the graphics in GFX00 to be DMA'd too so you have more space in GFX00.

Besides all that a lot of people have started using the 32x32 player patch which makes making new graphics a bit more straightforward at least in the bin files.

Your diagrams are really nice though.
Awesome! Thanks! I was struggling to find this stuff, that's just what I wanted! I'm still going to finish my diagrams because I'm having too much fun but that also highlights some corners I missed, like the misalignment of the small mario/riding yoshi/victory pose.
