Super Mallow RPG is a project I've worked on within the past year, and released not too long ago! What is Super Mallow RPG?
It's a ROM hack of Mario RPG, where instead of playing as Mario, you play as the all loveable cat hero known as Mallow! You may have seen this feline character in Super Mallow World, an SMW collab hack I've worked on years ago.
Mallow is a cat owned by Glitchcat7, one of the most profound SMW streamers on twitch, and co-founder and commentator of Romhack Races!
The goal of this hack was, simply, to learn Lazy Shell and learn how to create custom graphics in it. In addition I learned how the dialogue works, to change all dialogue relating to Mario to Mallow. And yes, frog/prince Mallow is in this game too. The dialogue was... altered, to reflect this.
I also wish to share some lessons learned in all of this.
1: Back-ups, when working with Lazy Shell. Always use back-ups.
2: Not all things are editable in Lazy Shell, when trying to edit Mario's graphics. Namely the world map sprite, several cutscene sprites, some mode 7 graphics, and various other miscellaneous bits around the game. If you see Mario in this hack, thats because there is no feasible way of editing that part of the ROM as of current.
3: Palette editing is possible, but finding the correct palette sets can be difficult. There are several copies of palette sets around the ROM, which can be edited in the palette editor itself or by using the built in hex editor.
4: SMRPG is too big of a game for, me personally, to be able to take on a full ROM hack of it. This project alone, which is just a character hack, took months of passionate dedicated work. There are just so many frames to edit, and various bits of detail to get it as polished as I could within the limits of Lazy Shell.
5: As janky as Lazy Shell can be, it truly is a super robust editor for SMRPG. It's got some bits and pieces missing here and there, sure. Comparing it to Lunar Magic, Lazy Shell is like a behemoth and Lunar Magic is like an ant, in terms of which editor is more powerful in editing its base game without requiring external tools like addmusic, pixi, gps, etc. With all that said, the tool still isn't "complete". Like I said there is still things I can't edit, and I'd still like to see this tool developed more and more.
You can find and download the hack here: Super Mallow RPG
Of course, make sure you have a SMRPG rom available to patch this! You will need the USA version.
