I've tried contacting RPGHacker in regards to Asar not working correctly (I'm trying to integrate the C binding made for it into my QT project, but I get a segmentation fault whenever trying to call asar_patch). I haven't heard back yet (probably a time zone thing, no big deal).

In the meantime, I'm trying to do some more stuff on the patch, and I'll probably end up making a few small levels to see if they work properly. I'm working on making some code to rewrite the existing headers (and create new headers) for a more creator-friendly format (mostly stuff that's already in LM, but some of it's a bit more streamlined, like making Method 2 the default, and making slippery/water flags apply to all entrances in a level automatically).

Good luck with this. An open-source editor could be pretty useful, especially if it means that you can edit the ASM hacks. You could also design new stuff without having to worry about backward compatibility (like the music and GFX bypass objects in Lunar Magic) and eventually maybe even add a few small patches for fixes and common additions (like storing the level number to $010B).
If you’re trying to make a Lunar Magic... replacement? Clone? Alternative? I’d focus on user friendliness for advanced tools. Like custom sprites, music, blocks, uberasm, patches. Have this tool be more of a “do it all” rather than requiring addmusick, pixi, gps, etc.

It's not in any way intended to be anything more than a level editor (and eventually overworld editor). While an all-encompassing tool would be nice, it's just far too ambitious at this point in time. Just making an open-source alternative to the one major tool that has yet to have one is enough for now I think.
Website
is there going to be plugin support for it? (though that's probably a "no" because it is open source)

A UNIX guy would tell you: Do one thing, and do it well.

The various shell commands are separate from the actual shell for a reason and the same can apply to other software including Superstar Editor. Having support to call them would be definitively nice. Lunar Magic does allow you do this in a certain way with custom toolbar buttons.

Okay, my layout looks ugly.
Will there be a Linux version? With Lunar Magic I have to use Wine since I don't have Windows installed in my computer, which is not that big of a deal but it would be nice to have a native alternative (and open source too)

The graphical user interace is Qt so porting it to Linux and other Unix-like shouldn't be too difficult.

I've been thinking a bit more about this. I think if if it has some of the features that Lunar Magic does but without hiding its ASM hacks it could become a serious competitor. I imagine LM would still be better for many users, but for people that like to tinker a lot with ASM it can be really frustrating when LM inserts a hijack without any indication that it's doing so. I guess I'm hoping for something that is easier to work with on the ASM side.

Are there plans for any features that Lunar Magic does not have?

Yes, I have two in mind specifically. However, these are things that will be implemented far in the future, and are not things that will be available from the start.

First, I'd like to integrate a more robust system for inserting custom objects. Currently you have to either select a range of tiles, or create an object with ObjecTool. I'm not looking to replace ObjecTool entirely, but I'd like to allow for some basic custom objects, like repeating and stretching sections of tiles, as well as basic slopes. Basically what the New Super Mario Bros. series does with its object format. I have the labels in the assembly marked as SuperBlock and SuperSlope, which will handle these objects.

Second, I'd like to make overworld editing easier by making some sort of terrain paint tool. I dunno how this would work yet, but basically it'd be nice to quickly place ground/water/walls/etc to block out the basic shape of the overworld, without having to manually place and copy/paste stuff as much. I'm trying to figure out how I wanna go about it though.

Pretty cool! Always appreciate seeing people take another stab at a Lunar Magic alternative (because let's be honest here, we simply need one). Of course most of these end up not going very far, but that doesn't mean we should stop tryin. Eventually, one of them might succeed and make for a suitable Lunar Magic alternative, so I'm always there to watch where these things go.

Definitely a good choice going with Qt, which potentially could make it compatible for multiple platforms.

Feel free to visit my website/blog - it's updated rarely, but it looks pretty cool!

Might I suggest implementing the included sample objects in the latest ObjecTool version?

I'll take a look at it and see if it'll work. ;)

This seems like a very interesting thing but it also feels like every other C3 someone attempts to make a new SMW editor and abandones it due to the shear amount of work it entails.
An Open Source editor would be nice however I feel that LM does so many things in the background like you said with a lot of ASM hacks and stuff that you'd really need to make something comparable in the end and then depending on how different the site might need to make a call on what the primary editor would be IF patches and what not where kind of exclusive to one or the other editor due to said hijacks and aSM hacks.

Either way I'm interested in seeing what you might come up with in the end.
This is a nice project you got here good luck on making this surpass lunar magic even though i dislike people who try to make a editor that surpasses lunar magic

This is just a suggestion but it would be nice if you added things like a bigger overworld or support for other things lunar magic hasn't done like support for the exgfx revolutions bg 4 and 5 and layer 4/mode 0 support and such

Good luck your gonna need it :)

This is my layout i plan on adding one soon

support for ExGFX Revolution would be one thing, but making a bigger OW isn't really doable since the size of the main OW is as big of an area that the snes can draw all at once from my understanding.
Now if you wanted say a second Main map or the ability to combine the submaps into a 2nd Large one that's more feasible though would probably require a good amount of recoding of SMW to make it work.

Not my project though so Yoshimaster is more then welcome to come through and debunk all of that if they wish.
Interesting project, good luck on this one.

Will this tool be the superior of Lunar Magic? We’ll look forward to it! :D

Tried to compile it and it crashed on trying to load a ROM. Guess I should have read the to-do list hahaha...

I hope you don't give up on this. SMW hacking is sorely lacking outside of Windows.
It's always nice to see some possible future open source alternatives for LM. Wishing you the best of luck for this.
