The hack I've been working on and off for the past year and a bit. No demo now, there area few game breaking glitches but those will be fixed come SAGE. This hack will only use the palette for the Commodore 64, you heard that right 1 singular palette shared by everything.

With that out of the way heres the plot and some screenshots:

Mario was on his way back to his castle when suddenly he felt a sharp pain in his back. The last thing he saw before blacking out was Wario running away from something. When Mario arose he was in a dark crypt, and then suddenly he was in a strange tropical land. Confused, he pushes onward.

Palette are good, but why is Mario's face green? Is it because of the back pain?

Looks pretty good so far. As a C64 enthusiast, I'm intrigued by the palette choice. You've got a good amount of stuff going on, and I like the simplistic overworld. Overall, good job! :)

The aesthetics itself is lovely and the plot seems to hide great mysteries. I will wait for a good opportunity to test your game for sure. Keep it up!

Limitations of the palette, it was this or white and white looked REAL bad.

I'm limiting myself to this palette only.

To everyone else: thank you!

I will be updating this thread with screenshots as C3 goes on, and then I'll make a proper thread after C3 ends.
Oh I see Thanks for The Info its Defenitely not The Worst Limitation i Would say :D

I dig the Comfydore 64 style of this hack plus the old-school level design and funky-sounding level names. The overworld maps really pop with those colors and details. I like the trueness to C64's limitations by just having a solid color for a BG, no "layer 2", and that sort of thing in this case also isn't taking anything away from the level: instead, it leaves your attention focused on what is there to interact with while it still looks appealing. I am also going to concur that considering the palette, olive (that's what I am seeing) is the best tone for Mario.

If you are doing anything with the music, are you going to replace samples and limit the number of music channels too or do you intend to be more lax on that?

Just look above you...
If it's something that can be stopped, then just try to stop it!

I do want to have nes/gb music(mostly sml2 and wario land) rendered out with C64 samples, but it is very far above my skill level. Music isn't super high on the agenda right now but I will have to look for someone more talented in that regard soon.
This is quite a cool hack. Brings up some nostalgic feelings! I agree that some palettes look a bit weird perhaps, but limiting yourself for consitency is a reasonable argument.
This hack certainly could be quite interesting when it's finished. I hope you'll also find some fitting music for this. #tb{:]}

This hack certainly looks good! I can't quite put my finger on the art style, but it looks to be a mix between C64 and GBC level graphics, i gotta say though that the palette choice is definitely a great pick! Gives it a rustic feel

Currently working on:
Super Kekcroc World 3
Loving the 8bit or w/e it is vibes this gives. I had to do a few takes to check this is SMW hack!

The overworld looks really cool, love how you've used little 8x8 level tiles. I feel like this looks like something from the GBC version of SMB, but I've never played it but only seen screenshots. Was any inspiration taken from there?
diantha more like die-antha

I like the C64 palette limitations, as someone with an interest in retro computers (though I need to play more games on those ^^;). The plot seems super weird, so I'm interested in more details to come. Looking forward to a demo.

A majority of the overworld tiles are from SMB Deluxe, yeah. I originally planed to do a SML2 style overworld but this one just popped out at me.
This 8-bit style really got me!

The OW too is beautiful, these palettes are really wonderful too

^ Incredible art made by Deeke
The overworld is so finely crafted, and I like the uncanny elements such as that moon hanging over the sea in a clear sky, the oddly coloured skies as a result of the c64 palette restriction, which in itself adds up to making this hack outstanding! I didn't even know people could show romhacks at SAGE, I don't know much about the event but this hack is gonna make me look into it for sure!
I'm really impressed with how nostalgic it looks like NES games. It also has those fresh SML references on the OW!

Woah this looks really neat! I like the aesthetic approach with this hack, definitely stands out.
This looks really neat! The palettes and tileset choices really carry that nostalgic vibe, but you really went the extra mile with the very NES-like cutoff of some of the ground tiles! It adds that extra nostalgic touch.

I'm definitely looking forward to this.
