Having trouble with Pixi? Look no further

This is a thread that you can use to submit and hopefully fix any problems you might encounter while using Pixi.

What is an issue?
Issues comprehend situations such as:
  • You have downloaded a sprite and it won't insert, for one reason or the other.
  • You don't understand how to use the tool itself.
  • Pixi gave you an error while using it
  • Pixi somehow crashed
  • You're writing a sprite and you want to implement something in it but you're not sure how Pixi handles that case.

What isn't an issue?
Some things aren't issues and as such, aren't suited for this thread.
  • You have a feature request that's not included in Pixi already
  • You wrote a sprite and something is wrong in your code making it not insert, that's not Pixi's problem, that's your problem.
  • You find a bug in the tool and you want to report it to the maintainer of Pixi to fix it.

For things such as feature requests, you can add an issue on the GitHub issue page and tag it as "Feature request".
For things such as tool specific bugs, do the same thing but tag it as a bug.
I will check often the GitHub issue page for new reports.
Additionally, if you're a coder and you want to contribute with additions to the tool, feel free to open a Pull Request on Pixi's GitHub page.

Alright, now that we've identified what is an issue and what isn't, if the reason you're in this thread identifies in those, continue reading.
To properly idenfity what you're doing wrong and what isn't letting you insert a sprite in your game, you'll need to fill in some fields.
If you don't properly fill the required fields, your help post will be ignored.

Quote the following part of the thread and fill it in:

as i am new to using PIXI, i need some help on inserting sprites.
(i'm more familiar with mikeyk's sprite tool)

here's the problem

i did everything in the readme that was included with PIXI and inserted a Angry Sun sprite, placing it in the right folders (GFX goes to graphics, Sprites go to ASM and Sprites folder and Sparkle Cluster goes to Cluster folder)

wrote the sprite as 01 in list.txt
first tried it as angrysun.asm, which lnserted ok

then game crashed at title screen, fade to black
i'm new to pixi and i wish the sprites were compatible with mikeyk's sprite tool

what am i doing wrong?

Some questions which will help debug:
1) Are you applying to a ROM that has already used Sprite Tool on it?
2) Have you saved the ROM in Lunar Magic at least once already?
3) Are you using SA-1?
4) Are you sure you have the most recent version of PIXI?

A crash on startup at least generally points to an issue with either your ROM or PIXI itself, rather than with the sprite you inserted.

are you sure you wrote
Code
angrysun.asm
? I think it should be angrysun.cfg if it's a normal custom sprite.
Also PLEASE I wrote this thread for a reason, USE the form provided at the end of this thread to describe your issues, what Thomas asked could've easily been avoided if you used that form because you would've answered those questions already.
This is probably the culprit to be honest:

, if they are using the latest version of Pixi, the tool will automatically warn you that you haven't edited the ROM in LM if you try to apply sprites before having edited it as per this.
I have an issue trying to insert the Volcano Lotus + Pollen sprite. When I try to insert the sprite (or literally any sprite with an "extra byte") I get this error.

I didn't do any alterations with the Assembly file.

it's a YES to questions 1, 2 and 4.
the rom in question has been modified

Then the issue is simple.
You CAN NOT apply both Romi's Sprite Tool and Pixi to a ROM since they have conflicting hijacks.
You need to port over your work to a rom which hasn't been modified with Romi's Sprite tool.

I'm gonna ignore this until you follow the form I provided in the first post of the thread (you didn't provide any actual info on your setup)

What does your list.txt look like? Also what does your folders look like too, like, where did you put the parts of the sprites (the lotus and the pollen)

The list.txt looks like this.
Code
...
53 cluster spawner/rainspawn.json
54 cluster spawner/flowerspawn.json
55 cluster spawner/sandstormspawn.json
56 cluster spawner/fishspawn.json
58 ThrowBlock.cfg
60 elite_ninji.cfg
C2 customshooter.cfg
C3 customshooternear.cfg
62 marine_pop.cfg
61 pop_torpedo.cfg
64 smmspiny.cfg
65 fireswooper.cfg
66 oneride_plat_l.cfg
67 oneride_plat_r.cfg
68 falling_block.json
69 metroid.cfg
70 flyinglotus.cfg

CLUSTER:
01 rain.asm
02 flowers.asm
03 sandstorm.asm
04 fish.asm

EXTENDED:
01 volcano_lotus_pollen.asm
02 needle.asm

And the folders look like this.
The list looks the same, except i put all ASM files into the ASM folder as well as in the Sprite folder.

Extended Sprites were placed in BOTH the Sprite and Extended folders.
Cluster Sprites went to the corect folder.

they inserted OK, but when i tested one out, all i got was either a Koopa or Shell-Less Koopa.

i don't get it, what is wrong? i'm used to MikeyK's sprite tool and the OLD version of Lunar Magic.

a video is being posted on youtube right now

Describe your issue (try to include as much details as possible):
Hello, I'm trying to insert this poison mushroom sprite
https://www.smwcentral.net/?p=section&a=details&id=22256
and when I do it shows up as the black square & red X square in Lunar Magic as is expected, and when I run the game the sprite acts correctly but it looks like an upside down fish.

My list.txt only contains the following
00 poison_mushroom.json

I've put the ExGFX80.bin file in the ExGraphics folder after I extracted the graphics files and Lunar Magic says everything was inserted fine. I have also tried opening the cfg editor and setting the sprite to use the second page and reinserting the sprites but the mushroom remains a fish. I've set the extra bit to 2. Thanks in advance for any advice or help you can offer.

It looks like this in LM

and this when I emulate the ROM

Did you actually set ExGFX80 to be used in your level as SP2 in #lm{sgfxby}? Just inserting it in the ROM won't do, you need to set it in the level.

(I'm assuming you also actually inserted them with #lm{insexgfx} and not just pasted the file in the ExGraphics folder.)

Yes, I did click the Quick Insert button.

Setting up SP2 has led to progress! Here's what everything is set to:

and then this is the result:

You might have inserted the wrong file. You should have gotten a file named ExGFXxxx.bin, replace xxx with any unused ExGFX number, insert it and use that number for SP2.

Okay, my layout looks ugly.

Yes, I did get that file I named itExGFX80.bin and then inserted it, then I set it in the SP2 like shown in the pic above, but I could have certainly done it wrong.

Well now you need to make sure you haven't the sprite still set to "use second graphics page"

It all works now. Bless your souls.
