I have a SERIOUS problem

I have been pestered for a week by a message saying "this version of Windows XP is no longer secure. To get up to date security features, please download the latest service pack" or something along the lines of that. So i finally downloaded it, and i restarted.

Now, i get the Windows XP screen, and then a blank screen after that. i dont know what the problem is, and i cant get into safe mode to do a system recovery. it just stops at the screen with the list of system files.

For the hell of it, with the blank screen up, i typed in my password, thinking maybe it was working but the display was messed up. Sure enough, i heard the startup jingle shortly afterward. So its obviously a display problem.

Ive never encountered something like this. what can i do?

First of all leave those ads alone that says you need to update your windows xp installation or service pack patches.

I have bad news and more bad news.....

You have 2 choices:

1.Either take your pc to a shop and have them back up any files off of your corrupted C: drive partition.

or....

2.If you have a recent update of any data files backed up on CD or DVD's, you will need to reformat or your hdd and install XP home or pro on your pc again.
All this will take you 30-45 minutes top

Once your done start putting back any files you had.

Good Luck.

*facepalm*

oh jeez. well, are you saying i can take it to a shop and get specific files backed up, or is it the whole C: drive?

It depends on if they can access your partition if it's not ruined badly.
Most computer shops or stores can get everything back, but it will cost you anywhere from 29.00 to 79.00 tops depending on how long it takes them and what can be salvaged.

If you have a Friend or family member who is very good with computers they can do it for you and save you a few bucks.
