Tip: Using Lunar Magic's "Change Properties in Sprite Header" dialogue, you can adjust the sprite slots in which sprites can spawn. For example, by using a sprite memory setting that doesn't use slot 07, you can easily prevent Reznor breaks in your hack.
I think it's because there is significant overlap between the gaming and anime fanbases.
Side note: Though USA pioneered console gaming, Japan boosted video games into the lasting mainstream - a lot of video games will also have that "anime" art style even if there is no cartoon around those characters, notably Sega, Atlus, Square Enix and all kinds of PC Engine stuff.

My thought is a lot of people on forums based on popular media have anime pfps because in the early days, anime in the west really only existed as either Pokemon or on... well, forums based on popular media. Really hard to avoid it when this is pretty much the birthplace of anime culture in the west.
