DOWNLOAD LEVEL HERE!
LAST UPDATED 8/20/2020

---

First time entering a VLDC here. The level I'm going to enter isn't going to blow anyone's minds away, first off. As with my own project, this level will attempt to be in a style akin to the original SMW while also trying to feel energetic at the same time.

This is sort of a reimagining of a very old level I did years ago for a collab hack that never finished. I kind of imagine it to be sort of a World 3 or 4 type of level, if you catch my drift. Not too difficult, but not too easy either.

A lot of this is still in the works, so much of what you'll see here is not even close to finished. And yes, the music will be changed.

Looks nice so far, friend.
I dearly love the Pokey spritesheet so it's good to see a level featuring it!
I'm using these enemies in a castle level in my main romhack..
Good luck. Can't wait to hear your music choice.

Thanks! I wanted to carry over that sprite set since it was used in the original level, but personally, it wasn't used to great effect. Hopefully, it goes all well. ;)

Another preview. This time, the bonus room. I've never been great at cave palettes, so hopefully this one looks okay. I'm trying to make the palette for the overworld carry over. Enjoy!

Well, it's here! For those not wanting to download the level, here's a video. For those wanting to download the level, the link is in the first post. The timer has also been set to 600 for testing purposes, because I know someone would say something about that. The level is NOT that long. It's only three minutes because I wanted to show some things off.

As they say, some things are never done.

It has been a week since I finished the level, and after receiving some feedback while watching the level in action for myself a couple of times, I decided to go back and rework the level. The biggest issues were that the level wasn't long enough and that most of the time, you were just standing and waiting.

With this new version, I've not only fixed the pacing issues, but I also extended the second part of the level, removed MOST of the Baseball Chucks, and brightened up the palette a bit. I think that I'm now satisfied with this version more than the first. Have a look at it yourself!

The level design looks alright imo.
Personally I'd work on the palettes again though since:
- the orange is a tad too bright imo
- since everything in the ground is orange (even the grass) it makes the level look kinda boring (because monochrome)

Otherwise there's not much to say I guess since the final version seems to be quite fair to play and fun. #tb{:j}

That's pretty much the only complaint at this point, the palette.

I'm going to have to redo the entire thing and go in a different direction. I've found that orange does not make for a good palette with dirt. The palette was reused from an extremely old level for a canned collab, so I never bothered to change it. That was extremely lazy of me, and I need to go on a different direction to make it stand out more.

That also means the name will have to change. I'll think of something. Trust me. Thanks for the suggestions! :)

You might be interested in the theory of colours.
It teaches about how to perform good contrast games.
As far as I remember, orange is highly complimentary to blue and/or cyan.

This link or that one might help. Good luck!

Hey this is me, Darkslayer.
After much trial with the colors, and some adjustments here and there, I give you the FINAL version of Orange Spice. That's it. It's final. I officially hate the color orange because of this palette (This is all a joke of course, just been a long day). New download link is provided above.

Another update! Thankfully, this one is minor.

This one addresses an issue that was demonstrated in Rykon's playthrough of the level. Essentially, it can be a bit difficult to determine when the Super Koopa's come out. There are already the arrow signs in place, so a little message box was added before the first wave, indicating that you're in their pumpkin hive and that going past the sign alerts them.

Besides that change, some more tweaks were done to make sure the balance and pace are kept intact, such as moving some enemies and land around. It's not that noticeable from the last version, hence why I'm calling it version 1.2.1. It's not worthy of making another video on it since this is the case.

Anyways, download link is on the first post as always.
