This was a fun contest, and I really like what I heard, so congrats to everyone! Besides the top 3 or so, which I believe we can all agree on sounding great, I want to express my appreciation for owtemmie.spc as well, as the synth gives new life to the somewhat stale NSMB leitmotif.
I personally don't really like the time extension, I feel like the contest lost its Pumped-Up-ness as it dragged on for longer. I think 72 hours is perfect for this kind of contest, especially since the time crunch is part of the challenge.
! I was not expecting this at all. I thought I'd get at least maybe top 5, but first place? Man, I don't even know how to comprehend this.
Thanks, everyone, for this awesome competition, and congratulations to everyone else who placed! It was my first time ever competing in any one of these, and I had loads of fun doing my port for this one. Hope to see you all next time when one of these comes up again.
Also, of course bebn legg did that SMW Autumn track. It sounds like something he'd make, and the instrumentation definitely screams "bebn legg did this." Nice 2hu Mario remix, man!
Whew, it was indeed very fun participating on this contest. How VLDC 12 is (or Was, depending on when you read this post) ongoing while this contest has started, I decided to make a full VLDC inspired remix. I was expecting not getting that far on the places, but at least, I had a lot of fun makin' my remix and manipulating SMW samples to sound like another instruments.
(One thing I really agree with everyone though, is that the Crash Noise Cymbals sounds terrible inside the song, but that's some price to pay when you want to make a unsampled song, and it lacks a proper Crash Cymbal sample.)
About the extension, I think maintain 72 hours is good enough, on my opinion. It feels more challenging if you have only 3 days to make a song. Of course, it depends of the complexity of the theme, but overall, its seems enough time.
It's been fun to participate since the contest, even though my college took up my time (on the contrary I would have done something more elaborate), but finally congratulations to the winners, and may the next one come! hehe
I want to thank and congratulate Hooded Edge, Blind Devil, bebn legg and Million Luxy for their songs since I genuinely enjoyed them.
bebn legg, mixing Mario and Touhou and having it right is a rare skill!
Honorary mention to mah boi King Mayro who bravely stood against fierce competition.
Thanks everyone for participating and see you next time, hopefully with myself as contestant, too.

Fun fact, my entry wasn't originally supposed to be Touhou, but I realized that parts of it were sounding a bit like Touhou and it was a good way to combat some of uninspiration, so I fully went with it and added stuff like the key changes and the piano solo at the end. I think around 0:42 is really where I started composing with Touhou entirely in mind.
I figured it would be a somewhat polarizing entry, but I'm still happy with it, especially the solo at the end. I think that was the most fun part to do.
Thank you for the kind words, everyone.

particularily because he started with Touhou songs (at least, I know him from C3 Winter 2019)
I haven't been porting as much Touhou as I'd like but yes I do like Touhou music. 👀

Likewise to you, I instantly recognized your full-sounding MIDI strings and FM guitar, and especially the Sonic 3 vocal samples haha.

Other then than, It's a bit a shame that I didn't participate but my music skills aren't good enough to participate in the contest.
Do it do it do it (next time)!! No harm in participating, right?
i didnt enter but i dont think it makes sense to assess the success/failure of the contest duration with this particular prompt. it was quite limiting in a way that encouraged simplicity, for which a high-ranking entry could likely be made in a day with not much sweat. this prompt did not need 5 days. for a more open ended theme, though, where a significant amount of effort may actually be required to do well, a longer time period makes sense. (note: i have nothing against the theme itself. i just don't think it was the right data to use for this experiment)
in general as well, some ppl have full time jobs. using an entire precious weekend to rush out a smw port is far from ideal in that situation, and those extra couple nights are a world of difference when it comes to both energy and stress levels.
i would try this again with a different prompt and see how things go. maybe it'll become clear that the duration of each contest should be decided based on the chosen prompt. maybe we should just make all these contests a week long and alleviate the rush entirely. maybe there's some other solution. maybe we should all fly away and leave this planet behind forever
