starring Mario as a forest spriteling that is tasked with saving the forest from an airship armada

yeah. great going, sending one spriteling. sure that'll go well.

Same deal as last year's VLDC (and BLDC), just making a thread to give myself more motivation to actually finish things.

Your concept makes me imagine a Ferngully/Final Fantasy IV crossover where the fairies take on the Red Wings instead of the deforestation machines lol. The fact that the airships are made of wood instead of steel gives the impression that this air force is using the forest to build more airships. What kind of gameplay are you going for? Does Mario jump from airship to airship until he gets to the "boss" one like that autoscrolling airship level in SMB3? Does he encounter artillery-type enemies like the Banzai Bill or any other projectile-throwing enemy like the Chucks or blue beach Koopa which actively try to attack Mario, or a Super Koopa generator so he is constantly under attack in set segments?

This is generally the layout I have planned out for this part of the level -- yes, I say "this part", I intend to have a short beginning that's just going through the forest

The bottom of the ship will be utilizing highly athletic sections and making use of the cape, mostly in gliding, and the insides/tops will make more use of enemies and artillery an' all that. Super Koopas sound like a good idea for the top

And yeah the idea of the airships being made out of the wood from the forest (it's magical or whatever and lets them fly or whatever) is exactly the kind of thing I was going for.

It's a bird, it's a plane

palettes are WIP. just wanted to crank out a ton of stuff today and see what makes me vomit tomorrow.
Ironically the line guide rope fix NOT being applied severely limits what I can do with them without taking a medieval style hatchet to the supple thighs of my level. c'est la vie.

I really like this level so far. It's very athletic in nature. Lots of energy. Despite the directions it steers you in, it is straight-forward and not disorienting. The line-guided rope along the bottom of the airship is well-executed and I love the part where Mario must fly - not enough sky levels implement this and it just feels like the most natural place to use the cape.

While I see you plan on making changes to the palette, I have another suggestion for looks: I would probably flip the 8x8 tiles on the inside of the crate so you don't end up with double-thick lines in the middle. The double-thick line you inevitably end up with should ideally go up against the "border" of the crate, where it will appear to tie in with a light source and give the crate a bit of depth as an object. Your level design is sweet and creativity is up there, so juice those extra 10 points.

I can agree on Counterfeit. The level is quite unique with its nonlinear gameplay, but it's not confusing since there's always just 1 real path for you to go.
I also agree that implementing flying in a sky level is a great idea and perfectly fitting.
Only the palettes are not really pleasant so far, but I'm sure you can change that too and make this a quite great level! #smw{:TUP:}

Mad respect for you sketching out your levels before designing them - that really takes me back to my old days of level designing, and also I just think it's a clever way to start working on something.

The level itself looks like it's coming along really well, too. Having to go down to grab a cape in order to go back and get up the platform is the sort of obstacle that's always pretty fun to get through, since it gives me Metroid vibes (except with less annoying backtracking, fortunately).
