Welcome to Super Famicompo 2! If you're new or you forgot, Super Famicompo is an open competition for SNES music of all kinds. The competition is split into two categories, and you can submit as many entries as you want. As the challenge category last time was underused, it has been removed this year.

Categories

Cover
This category is for anything in the realm of covers. Covers of game music, non-game music, whatever you want, as long as it is a cover of something.

Original
This category is for original songs of any kind. Anything goes as long as it's original work.

The Rules

- All content must be made for this competition. You're free to finish up an unreleased old song or whatever, but if material has been previously released in any form, it may not be submitted. It follows, of course, that you may not upload somebody else's work (excluding collabs - see below).
- You may collaborate with up to two others on any given submission. If you choose to do so, tell me as such when you submit.
- You may use any tool that generates SPC/SFC output, as long as it is not an automatic conversion tool (in the case of covers). This means no SPC2MML, nintspc, etc. Examples of tools that are allowed are AddmusicK, SNESGSS, SNESMOD, XMSNES, and so on.
- For the cover category, please refrain from submitting 1-to-1 SNES ports. While it may be technically impressive if you transcribe a complex Tim Follin song to MML, the SPC output is all that matters here, and a 1-to-1 port is not distinguishable as a "cover". You are of course still allowed to cover SNES songs in your own way.

Submission

I was hoping to have a webpage up in time for this, but it is not quite ready. For the time being, submit any entries via PM on SMWCentral (this account), by DM on Discord (sincx#9611), or by email to s3x5samps youknowwhat gmail.com. If/when the webpage becomes available, I will post an update. All you should submit is either an SPC file or SFC file (either an audio file or a ROM file). If you choose to submit SFC, there is a size limit of 2MB, and it MUST be your own content, that is, it must not contain any copyrighted material - no Super Mario World ROMs or anything like that. You must also tell me which category you are submitting to, and if it's a cover, you must include the name of the original song and game (if applicable).

Prizes

In terms of prizes, SMWCentral has some Steam game codes to offer, one of which will be given to the winner of each category. There will also be SMWCentral trophies available to the top 3 in each category, for those who have an account there at the time of results (if not, tough luck - I'm saying it here right now so I don't get any complaints, if you don't make an account before the results are out you will not get a trophy). Note that if your account is brown-banned on SMWCentral, you will not be eligible for SMWCentral-distributed prizes (but you can still enter).

With all that said - it's time for everyone to get SNES'ing! The deadline for submissions is September 30th October 11th at 23:59:59 UTC. Feel free to discuss things in this thread, or join the Discord server at https://discord.gg/MGerQFU. Have fun!
Hello. Maybe I'd participate with a cover or such.

When you say some automatic softwares are forbidden, does that include vgmtrans? If I convert a snes spc to a midi file and copy from that?

What about midi usage? Or if I cover a sheet I find on Musescore?

Actually when I read cover I understand it can be similar to the regular video game port.

Example given: this cover was done tweaking an existing midi (where the voice channel did not exist). It is a cover from a non-vg song, it has a bit of customization from its midi source, I feel it would have been a decent entry here.

Or do you instead encourage to do the work by ear and try our best, ie no midi, no sheet score, nothing to 'copy notes' from. I may have something in this case too, although it probably won't fare well haha.

Thanks.

Hey this is me, Darkslayer.

There's always more show. And you can call *qantuum's goals* dumb, or bad, or unrealistic, but there is nothing more realistic than that. You never get a happy ending, 'cause there's always more show.
Can you send two ports? you can also make an unsampled port

vgmtrans and midis are both fine. tools that are forbidden are ones that take an existing song and just plop out an spc (this only applies to covers)

yes, you can submit unsampled smw ports

yes, you can submit two covers, or as many as your heart desires, there is no limit on the number of entries you submit

Something I forgot to mention in the OP, which has now been added:

Since we can't use any automatic conversion tools, Petite is also forbidden right?

hello 🙂
petitemm is fine, since it does not do all the work for you

Time to have some more fun, perhaps.

Sorry :P

Let's see what stupid things can be brought about. Ready to do the thing. I think.

so there is no high limit on the number of submissions right? how many of them are expected, how much was it last occurence of the contest ?

what do I risk presenting low effort entries along with my bundle? I have some old midi compositions I could port to mml just for funsies, only thing I risk is having them not voted for too much , right?

must the spc entries be anonymized ? I've done that by default in my "spc info tags"

no limit on submissions
i forget how many there were last time

low effort and/or joke entries are allowed as long as they still follow the rules, their placement will be decided by votes

yes, the entries should be anonymous, but if you submit entries with author info i will remove it myself so you don't need to worry about it too much

There were 14 originals, 22 covers, and 5 challenge entries (the category didn't return for this compo), of which 4 of them were covers and 1 of them was an original. Thus, in total, 15 originals and 26 covers.

is there any possibility for the deadline being extended? i'm nowhere near done lol
if not, is there a possibility for late submissions with a penalty?

--------------------
i'm willing to toy with the idea of an extension if others are also in favor. if not, i will allow late entries at a penalty, to be decided upon later

(you can fill out the poll here if you have opinions: https://www.strawpoll.me/21012201)
